WASHINGTON, D.C. – Video games are not just for the young anymore – they’re for the young at heart. People over the age of 50 are one of the fastest growing group of video game players in the country and that is translating into big bucks. It’s a trend that can be seen at the Hayes Senior Wellness Center in Washington, D.C. That is where afternoons are a time to get up and strike in video game bowling. “It’s fun,” said 62-year-old Karen Glymph. “It brings you up, makes you laugh.” Glymph plays to win, even though video games are not what this generation grew up with. “We didn’t have this then,” she said. “Most everybody wanted to go outside. Now, they want to stay and play video games.” That is especially true for seniors, according to a new study by the AARP. “Gaming and technology – that's where we see a bigger shift,” said Alison Bryant, AARP senior vice president of research. How big is the shift? In 2016, about 40 million people over the age of 50 played video games monthly. By 2019, that number soared to more than 50 million. That means 44% of all seniors are now regularly playing video games. All of this is turning into big business, because the amount of money seniors spent on video games last year alone totaled billion. “I hope that the gaming industry is going to start taking a look at these numbers and saying, ‘wait a minute. There's really an opportunity here to increase our market share’ and to develop games that might be even more exciting for older adults,” Bryant said. Back at the senior center, Karen Glymph said she could never have imagined doing this in her younger years. “I really had no idea that I was going to play a video game and move my whole body,” she said. “So, it's like ‘whoa!’”It is an excitement for video games that’s contagious for an older generation, too. 1836

A 5-year-old boy with a brain tumor will get back his bejeweled replica wrestling belt after a pair of repentant thieves learned of his plight.For the Vicks of Seaford, Delaware, professional wrestling is "a family affair," according to Timothy Vick Sr., whose son Timmy, who has autism, was diagnosed with the tumor in October. "It's just a big family thing."Timmy's parents sought to soften news of the illness by saving money to purchase a special gift for the boy: a replica WWE championship title belt.To make the belt appear more authentic, the parents connected via Facebook with belt designer Sergio Moreira in Washington.Moreira said he offered to do work free of charge, replacing the plastic gems with cubic zirconia and thickening the plates."It'll be as close to the original belt that he sees on TV every say than any other belt he could buy in the market," Moreira said.The Vicks shipped the belt across the country, with the package being left on Moreira's porch earlier this week. His door view camera then captured two thieves stealing the package.But days after police released images of the thieves and local media told Timmy's story, the two women returned to Moreira's home with the belt and a four-page handwritten note of apology."They said they were homeless drug addicts and thought they could make a few extra dollars off of whatever was in the boxes," he recalled."I could see the look on their faces, that they were very, very sad and they had been crying."Moreira said he hugged the women and asked them to take care.He said he would be hesitant to file charges as long as the women seek help."I don't see any other way to do it because everybody has something in their lives they're dealing with," he said.The note from the women said, "We are so sorry for taking your stuff. A Georgia woman and her ex-boyfriend were arguing in her car two years ago when her driver's side window shattered and she blacked out.When she came to, she was in his car, not hers, and they went to his mother's house because she had a head wound.She thought she had been cut by flying glass. But her ex, Jerrontae Cain, had a secret -- he had shot her.Thursday, a judge sentenced Cain, 39, to 25 years in prison for several crimes including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon. Cain had been convicted of felony sexual battery in 2010.For a month after the shooting in 2017, the woman stayed at Cain's mother's house, suffering through severe headaches, dealing with memory loss and having trouble when she tried to talk, according to a news release from the Fulton County District Attorney's office. In June that year, a friend took her to the hospital.Doctors at Atlanta Medical Center found a bullet in the back of her skull, one that would have to remain there because trying to take it out could kill her, the DA's office said.Hospital staff alerted investigators, and the woman told them she didn't remember being shot -- she just recalled the window breaking.Cain told police the woman, now 42, had crashed her car into a tree. But detectives found the crime scene inconsistent with his explanation, according to the DA's office.They issued an arrest warrant but Cain was not caught until January 2019, more than a year later, when police showed up at a home in College Park, just south of Atlanta.
