SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police say their recruitment numbers are up, in part due to their innovative recruitment strategies.In a presentation at the Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee, data showed they've hired more people in 2018 compared to 2017 and 2016. "We had 63 candidates that applied for there and are in the academy, that was the largest, highest number academy we've had in 25+ years," Lt. Steve Waldheim, with SDPD's Backgrounds and Recruiting Unit said.So far this year, the department's hired 94 total officers, 15% are women.Here's the breakdown:2016: 3,229 took written exam, 137 hired2017: 3,184 took written exam, 126 hired2018: 2690 took written exam, 198 hiredWaldheim said their recruitment officers are doing a better job selecting applicants and preparing them for the hiring process, creating a lower drop off rate."The more officers we put on the street, the safer it is for the community, the faster response times we have," Waldheim said they need to fill 175 vacant positions, and to do so, they've gotten creative.Those innovative ways include everything from going to schools, military bases, Comic Con, working with the Padres to advertise and getting on social media."One of the biggest challenges is our unemployment rate," he said. San Diego County's unemployment rate remains low, hovering around 3% providing a limited pool to pull from.Once sworn in, Waldheim said there's multiple career options within the department, "helicopter, you can ride on a boat with our beach team, we have canines, motorcycles, we have detectives, investigations."He said the city's worked to increase their pay, to become competitive with other law enforcement agencies. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego's transit service is getting millions in state funding, as part of billions being awarded to projects throughout the state.San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System was awarded .09 million to update transit routes, add zero-emission buses, and create a new route between Imperial Beach and the Otay Mesa Border Crossing.MTS said they plan to purchase 11 zero-emission buses to operate on the proposed Route 925 between Otay Mesa Transit Center and IB.RELATED: Under-utilized MTS land could be used for affordable housing, report saysThe transit service will also use the funds to improve the America Plaza station, Old Town Transit Center, and rail infrastructure on select lines.“This is a highly competitive grant program. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some San Diego Police Department officers are being isolated as they await test results for coronavirus, according to SDPD Chief David Nisleit.Those officers were exposed to the virus and are currently under isolation, Chief Nisleit told 10News anchor Jim Patton. A police spokesperson added that officers have been self-reporting possible exposure, both on-duty and off-duty. A medical expert then determines if they should be tested. "We're taking great care of them, absolutely," Nisleit added.Precautions are being taken by law enforcement across the county. A spokesperson from Oceanside Police says they're doing more phone or online reports when possible. Dispatch and officers are also asking more questions about cold and flu-like symptoms.A video from the Chula Vista Department tells the public, "We may ask you to wear a mask."Starting Friday, Chula Vista Police will be taking an extra step. A spokesperson says they'll strongly suggest officers wear protective equipment for all interactions with the public closer than six feet. The San Diego Sheriff's Department, along with El Cajon, Chula Vista, Oceanside, and Carlsbad Police say none of their officers has tested positive. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say a man has died after an officer-involved shooting in the City Heights area on Thursday.SDPD officers responded to reports of a man with a gun in the 4200 block of Menlo Ave. at about 4 p.m., according to SDPD Lt. Matt Dobbs.Police say two women were driving in the area when they were confronted by a man with a handgun."The man manipulated the slide of the gun as if he were loading it and pointed the gun towards the women," according to a SDPD news release.
