MADRID (AP) — Restoration work on a sculpture in northern Spain has resurrected memories of a restored Christ fresco in another Spanish city that drew ridicule as well as tourists. The latest incident concerns a relief sculpture on the exterior of an office building in the city of Palencia. What was once the bust of a smiling woman now looks more like the head of a cartoon character. The disfigurement was bought to light by a local artist who posted before and after photographs on his Facebook page. The poorly done restoration drew immediate comparisons with an "Ecce Homo" fresco in Borja. An amateur artist's work on Christ's face in 2012 drew comparisons to a monkey.A Palencia City Hall spokesman declined to tell the Associated Press when the work was done or by whom but added that the restoration would most likely be investigated by regional authorities. 876

Mayor Megan Barry has surrendered the passcode for her personal phone to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, her attorney says in a statement released Friday morning."This morning I spoke with TBI Director Mark Gwyn to provide the TBI with the passcode for Mayor Barry's personal cell phone," Jerry Martin said in the statement."This is her personal phone, not her Metro issued phone. I have confidence that Director Gwyn will ensure that the TBI limits its search of her personal phone to only items that are relevant to its investigation."Martin added that "reports that the Mayor has been uncooperative during this process are untrue."He said that the mayor's legal team has "provided the TBI with thousands of pages of documents at its request."Mayor's Lawyer?Asks DA To Recuse Himself From CaseSpecial Section:City Hall ScandalThe former U.S. attorney said that Barry's legal team was just trying to clarify how non-relevant matters would be handled before the public release of a damning search warrant affidavit that implies investigators may have nude pictures of the mayor."We were in the process of preparing to turn over her phone when the TBI, presumably at the director of the District Attorney, sought a search warrant," Martin added."This tactic was surprising since the evening before the search warrant was issued, I communicated our willingness to turn over the phone."However, by seeking the phone via a search warrant the authorities were ultimately afforded the opportunity for the unorthodox release of the underlying affidavit."While it may be common for search warrants themselves to be made public, the underlying affidavits are typically not returned and made public at this stage of the investigation."Read the full statement below: 1775

Massachusetts is the first state since the deadly shooting in Las Vegas last month to ban bump stocks, the gun accessory the shooter used to increase his rate of fire.Bump stocks became a major source of discussion among lawmakers across the country after the attachments were found on the guns of Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock, who killed 58 and injured some 500 last month. But talk of banning the devices nationwide appears to have stalled.Beginning in 2018, penalties for the possession or use of a bump stock or trigger crank in Massachusetts will range from probation to life in prison, Representative David Linsky, a Democrat who proposed the amendment, told CNN.The new law defines a bump stock as "any device for a weapon that increases the rate of fire achievable with such weapon by using energy from the recoil of the weapon to generate a reciprocating action that facilitates repeated activation of the trigger."In other words, the devices allow semi-automatic rifles to fire more rapidly, similar to automatic weapons. Twelve of them were found on firearms recovered from Paddock's Las Vegas hotel room.Critics of the legislation say lawmakers rushed to push the passage without holding public hearings.Jim Wallace, Executive Director of the Gun Owners Action League, a Massachusetts gun-rights group, called the legislation "a knee-jerk reaction."Though lawmakers in the Massachusetts House and Senate both introduced traditional bills just days after the October 1 Las Vegas shooting, the legislators ultimately felt they needed to act in response to a public outcry from constituents, Linsky told CNN.Constituents flooded the inboxes of Massachusetts lawmakers, and Linsky said the "vast majority were begging legislators to do something about the situation."State House members enacted the ban by introducing language in an amendment to the fiscal year 2017 budget.RELATED: Senate Democrats want to ban assault weapons 1948

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – One of the three Louisville police officers involved in the shooting death of Breonna Taylor is being fired. The city’s mayor, Greg Fischer, announced Friday that the police department is initiating termination procedures against officer Brett Hankison, 44.“Unfortunately, due to a provision in state law that I very much would like to see changed, both the Chief and I are precluded from talking about what brought us to this moment, or even the timing of this decision,” the mayor said in a statement.According to a termination letter obtained by WLKY, Hankison was informed of his firing Friday morning. The other two officers involved in the fatal shooting, 47-year-old Jon Mattingly and 42-year-old Myles Cosgrove, remain with the department, but have been placed on administrative reassignment, the Courier Journal reports. As part of a narcotics investigation, the officers used a battering ram to knock down Breonna Taylor’s door as they served a no-knock warrant in the early morning hours of March 13.During the incident, Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, has said that he thought the officers were intruders and fired a warning shot. The officers returned fire, shooting Taylor eight times, and she died in the hall of her apartment. No drugs were found.Thursday, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron held a press conference, where he asked for patience from the public as his office investigates the shooting.Taylor's death is one of a handful of African Americans who have died at the hands of police officers or former police officers in 2020. The killings have prompted massive protests calling for an end to police brutality across the country. 1689
