Former Vice President Joe Biden paid tribute to the late Sen. John McCain in Phoenix in a speech at his memorial service on Thursday, sharing personal stories about their time together in the Senate and lamenting disorder and division in the chamber that McCain fought to repair."We both loved the Senate," said Biden, who mourned the fading of bipartisanship in the chamber over the years. "We both lamented, watching it change."Biden and McCain used to sit next to each other during long debates in the 1980s and '90s. In 1996, they were each told independently by members of their own parties that their visible friendship didn't look good. 651

For the second and final time during the 2020 presidential race, President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden square off on the debate stage.Current polls show Trump trailing in most national polls by a 6 to 10 percent margin and trailing in three key states that he won in 2016: Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan — though Trump did outperform poll numbers during the 2016 election. The debate also comes amid a flood of political news out of Washington that could impact talking points.Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee sent Judge Amy Coney Barrett's Supreme Court nomination to the Senate floor — a significant step that could allow the Senate to confirm her nomination as soon as Monday.A day after leaving in the middle of a 60 Minutes interview, the White House scooped CBS and published the full, unedited footage online.Weekly unemployment claims dipped below 800,000 for the first time in months, though those figures remain historically high.Thursday's debate was originally slated to be the third debate between the two candidates. However, a town hall debate that was scheduled to take place on Oct. 15 was canceled after Trump declined to participate. Trump objected to the Commission on Presidential Debates announced the town hall would take place virtually due to the President's COVID-19 diagnosis.Thursday's debate will also feature a format change that requires a candidates' microphone to be turned off while his opponent is delivering his opening remarks during a given topic.Last Friday, moderator Kristen Welker announced that the following topics would be addressed Thursday night: fighting COVID-19, American families, race in America, climate change, national security, and leadership.Watch the debate live in this story beginning at 9 p.m. ET. 1816

For years, the White House Correspondents Association has pushed for access to the White House grounds for reporters and news media. On Wednesday, the WHCA told its members to stay away. The White House Correspondents Association’s recommendation came as three of its members are recovering from coronavirus infections. There have also been a number of infections among White House press staffers, including press secretary Kayleigh McEnany. In response to the cluster of coronavirus cases, the WHCA said that only a handful of journalists should work from the White House grounds. The association says other than reporters working at the White House as part of the “pool” as well as those with enclosed offices should refrain from working inside the White House. Pool correspondents are the small, rotating group of reporters who share reports to the rest of the media.“We would also strongly encourage all journalists to avoid working from the White House grounds entirely if it can be avoided,” WHCA chair Zeke Miller said.Miller said that the organization has been pushing for the White House to help with contact tracing.“We have communicated to the White House that, as a press corps, we would like more information to evaluate our own potential exposure,” Miller said. “We have pressed for them to provide updates on known and suspected infections so that reporters can as soon as possible know if they and their families have been put at risk. The administration, citing privacy concerns, has not provided additional details.”Miller said that protocols by White House journalists have helped minimize spread of the virus among its members.“While we are awaiting additional test results for some members, it appears clear that our safe behavior has helped contain this virus,” he said. “We haven’t just been lucky, we have followed science and we have been vigilant.” 1880

Fired FBI Director James Comey said in an interview that aired Tuesday morning that the FBI's credibility is worse now than it was a few years ago but would be even worse had it not been for his actions leading the bureau."It's worse. But again, people can disagree about this. And people I respect will. But my judgment is it would be worse today had we not picked the least bad alternative," Comey said, speaking with NPR's "Morning Edition." "I think the decisions that we had to make and lots of other follow-ons, sure, the Department of Justice's and the FBI's reputation has been hurt," he continued. 614

Following the controversy sparked by a football player carrying a "thin blue line" American flag on the football field Friday night, Chardon Local Schools Superintendent Michael Hanlon Jr. has banned the flag in a school setting. In a statement to the community, Hanlon said the incident understandably drew responses on social media and direct communications to district officials. 389
