CLINTON, Mo. — A Clinton police officer died and two other officers were hurt in a shooting at a home in the small Missouri town late Tuesday evening.Ofc. Christopher Ryan Morton died in the shooting, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The 30-year-old had been with the department, then returned to the force after a shooting?last year killed Clinton police officer?Gary Michael.In a news conference early Wednesday morning, Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe said officers responded to a 911 call at 9:20 p.m. local time in which a woman was screaming in the background. When police arrived at the home, Sgt. Lowe said a man fired at the responding officers from inside the residence.The officers then returned fire and went inside the home. When they went inside, the suspect shot and killed one officer and hurt two others.The officers got out of the home and crews took them to the hospital.The suspect then barricaded himself inside.Around 12:10 am, the Highway Patrol SWAT team went into the home and found the suspect dead. It is not yet known if the suspect died as a result of the gun battle with police or if it was self-inflicted.The injured officers were receiving treatment at hospitals in the Kansas City area, and according to Sgt. Lowe, their injuries are not life-threatening."The Clinton Police Department is a well respected police department," said Sgt. Lowe. "They will forge on, but they will need help along the way. We are all saddened by this tragic event. It's one of those things that we realize can happen, but when it does happen, it definitely hits home."Cassie Toliver, who lives near where the shooting took place, said police vehicles, sirens and lights quickly filled the streets and law enforcement barricaded the area from both sides. In a phone interview with Scripps station KSHB in Kansas City just after 11 p.m. Tuesday night, Toliver said she could hear gun shots around 10:50 p.m. Tuesday."We can still hear shots being fired," said Toliver. "We don’t whether that’s the shooter or the cops because it’s so dark outside.”The two women who called 911 were not injured, Sgt. Lowe said. "We will be speaking with them right away."Sgt. Lowe said Morton had been with the department for a while."It's hard to put into words what you go through when you have an officer killed in the line of duty," said Sgt. Lowe.Tuesday night's shooting happened exactly seven months after Clinton police officer Gary Michael was shot and killed in the line of duty. "It's just another tragic event for this community and this police department," Sgt. Lowe said. "They've endured a lot and they are going to endure more. Everyone's thoughts and prayers would be appreciated."Sgt. CINCINNATI, Ohio — A settlement has been reached after a police officer used a Taser on an 11-year-old girl while working an off-duty detail at a Kroger in Southwest Ohio.The City of Cincinnati and Kroger have agreed to pay the family of Donesha Gowdy 0,000 to settle the claim of excessive force, according to a news release from family attorney Al Gerhardstein.Donesha had been shoplifting from the Kroger on Aug. 6 when Officer Kevin Brown, who was on security duty, ordered her to stop. She didn't. The officer fired his Taser as she walked away. One probe struck her at the base of her spine; the other hit between her shoulder blades.The incident prompted an apology from Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley and a promise from Vice Mayor Christopher Smitherman to review Cincinnati Police Department’s protocol on Tasers.Cincinnati Police Chief Eliot K. Isaac promised “a very thorough review” of Brown's actions, as well as the department’s use-of-force policies as they pertain to juvenile suspects. Cleanup is underway in Louisiana and southeastern Texas after one of the strongest hurricanes to ever make landfall in the area caused extensive damage and flooding on Thursday.Reports Thursday indicated that Hurricane Laura killed six people, including a 14-year-old girl. Officials expect that number to rise as recovery efforts continue.Laura is continuing to bring heavy winds and rains to the south-central United States. Reports say that the system spun off tornadoes in Arkansas on Thursday night, and the storm will bring heavy rains and 30 mph winds to the Missouri Valley and Ohio Valley regions on Friday.As of Friday morning, more than half a million people in Louisiana are still without electricity. About 200,000 people in Texas are also without power, including 94 percent of people in Orange County, a county bordering Louisiana.Among the areas hardest hit by Laura was Lake Charles, a city in southwest Louisiana. Though it's located about 40 miles inland, massive storm surge and heavy rain have caused extensive flooding in the area. CLEVELAND — Three suspects were arrested after an officer was shot and killed in Cleveland's Stockyard neighborhood Thursday evening.The unidentified suspects was arrested Friday morning.The shooting occurred around 10 p.m. in the 3200 block of West 65th Street near Storer Avenue, police said.The officer, later identified as Det. James Skernivitz, was rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center where he died from his injuries, according to the Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association.Police said another person was confirmed dead on the scene but was not a suspect.Skernivitz's identity was held pending the notification of his family, as he is married with children, police said.Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association said Skernivitz has been on the force for "a while," was "well-liked" and was a "good man.""This one hurts," Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association president Jeff Follmer said.Skernivitz was a 25-year veteran of the Cleveland Division of Police, authorities said."We definitely need the prayers of the people in the city.
