By sheer number, Democrats have reason to celebrate post-midterms when it comes to seats for governor. In Wisconsin, Democrats ousted Republican incumbent Scott Walker by voting in former educator Tony Evers. It was also a surprise in Kansas, as the Democratic state legislator who beat staunch Trump supporter Kris Kobach describes her win as, “a wave of common sense.”Perhaps two of the biggest gubernatorial wins went to the Republicans—in Florida and in Ohio, two swing states that could boost the odds for Republicans in 2020.But the governor’s race that gained some of the biggest attention was the governor’s race in Georgia, where Democrat Stacey Abrams trails Republican Secretary of State Brian Kemp.Votes won’t be certified until next week, but the margin is so thin right now that Abrams believes they'll be headed for an automatic runoff election. In Georgia, a runoff is triggered when neither candidate reaches 50 percent.  Abrams' campaign says that could happen once absentee ballots are factored in."We feel we owe a fight to voters, to all voters, to make sur every vote is counted," says Lauren Groh-Wargo, Abrams’ campaign manager.Despite Abrams refusing to concede, Kemp sounded confident in his early morning speech, saying, “There are votes left to count, but we have a very strong lead. And, folks, make no mistake, the math is on our side to win this election." 1398

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - North San Diego County air travelers will soon have a new flight option from McClellan-Palomar Airport in Carlsbad.California Pacific Airlines said Friday it would start taking passengers to Pacific Southwest destinations before the end of summer.Company president and CEO Paul Hook says the airline will succeed where others have failed because it will be able to offer something they could not: reliability.“What we’re looking at here an Embraer 145 regional jet,” said Hook as he looked at the 50-seat jet on the tarmac.Potential investors and ‘Airplane’ actor Robert Hays were on board a flight that left Friday for Sacramento. Hays represented a blood donor charity which partners with regional airlines to deliver rare blood types quickly.“All the doors are set up to open really easily - so, when I go up and announce I’ll be your captain today, I want to see how fast the plane empties,” Hays said. The airline will offer service to cities including San Jose, Phoenix and Las Vegas. 1023

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A Lee County mom kept her son home from school on Monday because she felt it was inappropriate for the school to allow children to have a water gun fight in the wake of recent school shootings. The mother, who did not want to be identified because she didn't want to identify her son, said during a time when students are put through active shooter training, encouraging students to shoot what she calls water guns at each other is inappropriate. The Lee County School District is calling them "squirt toys," and says they're not water guns."What is this? Put the fun back in the gun? I don't understand it. It completely contradicts everything they stand for," the mom said. She said her son came home from Mariner Middle School recently and told her he would need money for a water gun fight on field day."This is completely asinine. I don't understand. They're telling us it's necessary to teach them there's no tolerance for guns. You enter the property, it's a gun free zone. Yet they're saying here's a gun, point it at me, point it at your fellow student and pull the trigger," she said. She said she understands they're meant for fun.  "But who knows what's going on inside these kids heads now-a-days. How do you know they're not fantasizing about the adrenaline rush of what if this is real?" she said. She said given the timing of the Santa Fe school shooting and increased sensitivity in Florida after the Parkland shooting, this activity isn't appropriate."Any other day of the year, according to the Lee County School District code of conduct policy, there's no fake weaponry even allowed on school," she said. The Lee County School District spokesperson said they're not water guns, they're squirt toys or pool toys. He also said: "Field days are meant to be a reward for the students hard work during the school year. We encourage any parent who has concerns with certain school activities to contact their child's principal." Rob Spicker, Communications Coordinator at the Lee County School District said."You can't sugarcoat the world, but certainly when I take my son to school, I don't expect his teacher to hand him a play gun, empty water gun, a water gun, and say 'point this at me and shoot,'" she said. She said she's also disappointed she wasn't notified that this activity would be part of field day, and was told other schools were doing this, too. 2462

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Brad Pitt, star of the new space movie "Ad Astra," had a burning question for a real-life astronaut."Who was more believable? Clooney or Pitt?"In a televised call Monday, NASA astronaut Nick Hague answered Pitt — "absolutely" — getting a big laugh. Pitt's Hollywood pal George Clooney starred in the 2013 space film "Gravity."Hague and the rest of the International Space Station crew previewed "Ad Astra" a few weeks ago. The movie opens Friday down here.Pitt portrays an astronaut who travels through the solar system to find his father. The film includes actual NASA shots of the moon and Mars."How'd we do? How was our zero-G?" Pitt asked from NASA headquarters in Washington."I got to tell you, it was really good," said Hague, six months into his own 6 ?-month mission. "The depictions, the settings all as you can tell look very similar to the type of setting I've got around me. I got to imagine it was a lot easier for me to kind of enjoy the zero-G than it was you," he added, flipping in weightlessness.Pitt noted the movie's spaceship was "a bit cleaner" than the station. After asking about spacewalking and seeing Earth from space, Pitt said, "Most important question: Who controls the jam box?" Answer: The astronauts take turns. With three Americans, two Russians and an Italian on board, the music has an "international flare," Hague said. The 20-minute chat ended with Pitt sharing, "I can't wait to brag to my kids."___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Department of Science Education. CAMPO, Calif. (CNS) - A man suspected of setting fire to a historic commercial structure in downtown La Mesa during a police brutality protest that devolved into rioting last spring was jailed Tuesday on suspicion of arson and felony vandalism.Daniel Louis Sandoval, 43, was arrested Tuesday morning near his Campo home in connection with the fiery destruction of the Randall Lamb and Associates Building on Palm Avenue, according to the La Mesa Police Department. The structure, which had been designated as historically significant by the La Mesa Historical Society, was one of several buildings, including two banks, burned to the ground during the unrest. Two other men have been arrested in connection with the fires and the looting of stores during the chaotic demonstration. The May 30 protest was sparked by the Memorial Day in-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the arrest of another Black man, Amaurie Johnson, in La Mesa a few days later.Johnson's rough arrest by a white La Mesa police officer was captured on video and proliferated over social media, prompting extensive backlash and a federal lawsuit filed by Johnson against the city. The demonstration began with protesters marching onto Interstate 8 in the afternoon, stopping traffic, before moving on to La Mesa police headquarters.Though the protest began peacefully, confrontations began breaking out at nightfall, with some demonstrators throwing things and officers firing beanbag rounds and tear gas to disperse the crowd.Sandoval was booked into San Diego Central Jail, where he was being held on 0,000 bail pending his initial court appearance. No arraignment date for the suspect was listed in jail records as of Tuesday evening. 1727
