SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local non-profit organization named "Promises2Kids" is helping children who are in San Diego's foster care system receive some of the structure and support that may be lacking due to the challenges of their home life."Having extra support and some stability is something I'm really grateful for because there's been so many times in my life when that's been absent," said Tiffani Hamilton, who has participated in the program for several years.Promises2Kids provides economic, educational, and emotional assistance, from purchasing school supplies and other items, to tutoring, to helping teenage children prepare and go through the college application process. They also provide mentors, who often form lifelong relationships with the students they guide.Hamilton's story is not unusual. She and her five siblings were raised by a single mother, who struggled with addiction and abusive relationships until her death. Hamilton was separated from her siblings when she entered the foster care system, bouncing from home to home. She credits Promises2Kids for helping give her the assistance and support she needed to achieve her goal of going to college."It's given me an experience that I never thought I would have. It's definitely shaped me into who I'm becoming. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Kearny Mesa hotel will be used as a new coronavirus quarantine site in San Diego.The Ramada by Wyndham San Diego North Hotel & Conference Center will be utilized as a new quarantine site in San Diego, according to the hotel.Individuals heading to the location have undergone medical screenings and show only mild to no symptoms. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A measure that would increase San Diego's hotel tax is heading to the ballot on March 3 and a recent poll shows how San Diegans feel about Measure C. Measure C would increase San Diego’s hotel visitor tax from 10.5 percent to 11.75, 12.75 and 13.75 percent depending on hotel location through at least 2061.The money would go toward expanding the convention center, funding homelessness programs and fixing San Diego roads. According to the “Yes on C” campaign, the measure would create 7 million for homeless programs in the first five years of the initiative. The campaign also says the measure would create 7,000 jobs. The measure requires two-thirds supermajority to pass. A 10News-San Diego Union-Tribune poll shows that, as of February, 61 percent support the measure while 21 percent are opposed and 18 percent are undecided. “A majority of San Diegans are uniting behind Measure C because it is straight forward in its approach to tackling the city’s most pressing issues with a tax on tourists, not San Diegans," said Greg Block, a spokesman for the Measure C campaign. In light of recent events, the community has stepped in to make sure the talks continue.Racism, diversity, and inclusion are just some of the words that sit on Jennifer Koller's vocabulary wall inside of her Steele Canyon High School classroom. Three years ago, she decided a class with those topics were needed for her students."The course was designed after years of watching the kids disconnect from the curriculum that didn't feel relevant to them," says Koller.With materials found at Teaching Tolerance, an aid for educators, it allowed her to shape the Literature and Social Justice course.It starts with identity, it moves to diversity, has justice, and ends with action," says Koller. "The last unit is when students really get to pick their own social justice issue and educate their classmates on something that's near and dear to their hearts."Recent Steele Canyon graduate, Tia Saunders, took Ms. Koller's course. She says it allowed students to have tough conversations, like race, with each other."It gave us all a chance to really just see everybody's side and truly pick whatever you want to do and understand why everybody thinks the way that they do," says Saunders.Koller says after seeing the recent events around San Diego and the country, following the death of George Floyd, she reached out to the community for help getting new anti-racism books for the class. The books were fully funded in less than two days."I feel my step into this next is to foster more intense and courageous conversations about race," says Koller. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego County sheriff’s deputy was arrested and charged with multiple sex crimes involving minors.Chula Vista police said they received anonymous tips via Crime Stoppers on April 9, 2020, “regarding an unidentified adult male suspect, who engaged in sex acts with an underage victim. Investigators were able to identify the suspect and also determine that there were two additional underage victims.”During the probe, investigators identified the suspect, 27-year-old Jaylen Fleer, as a correctional deputy with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.According to CVPD officials, Fleer surrendered to investigators on Wednesday, July 22. After being processed at CVPD headquarters, he was transported to the sheriff’s Vista Jail.Jail records obtained by ABC 10News show Fleer was booked on 15 charges, including oral copulation with a person under 16, luring a minor for a sex offense, and sending harmful material to seduce a minor.Chula Vista police noted that the sheriff’s department “cooperated and assisted with the investigation.”In a statement, the San Diego Sheriff Department said that Fleer was placed on administrative assignment when the department was made aware of the possible incident and that because of the seriousness of the allegations, his authority as a peace officer was taken away.
