Gap and Old Navy have been trending in opposite directions for years. So they're finally splitting up.Gap said Thursday that it would break into two companies. One of the companies will contain Old Navy, while the other yet-to-be-named business, currently called NewCo, will comprise Gap, Banana Republic and other brands, including Athleta and Hill City.The move is designed to allow Old Navy — which has grown to billion in annual sales since it opened its first store in 1994 — to expand on its own. Meanwhile, the company can consolidate its older brands like Gap and Banana with its newer ones like Athleta and Hill City. NewCo will have about billion in annual sales."We think the best way for each company to grow and meet the evolving needs of our customers is to allow them to pursue tailored strategies separately," Gap CEO Art Peck told analysts Thursday. Sonia Syngal, CEO of Old Navy, will keep running that company.Wall Street cheered the decision: Gap stock was up 25% in after-hours trading.The separation is a tale of two vastly different businesses: Old Navy has thrived in recent years, and sales at stores open at least a year grew 3% in 2018. Meanwhile, the Gap has struggled — its sales fell 5% last year. Banana Republic has been closing stores, which has helped the company improve sales."Old Navy continues to outpace Gap brand and Banana Republic, and is one the fastest-growing major apparel brands," said Christina Boni, analyst at Moody's.The Gap, which was founded in 1969, used to be the coolest brand in retail: It rode the mall boom in the back half of the 20th century, and its logoed sweatshirts and turtlenecks won over everyone from teens to moms and celebrities like Sharon Stone.But the brand fell out of touch with the Baby Boomers who grew up on the brand, and it failed to attract the Millennials who drive fashion trends today. Retailers such as Levi's, Target and fast-fashion sellers H&M and Zara lured away Gap's denim shoppers with cheaper prices and trendier styles.The company has been talking for a while about how to make the Gap a healthy part of the business again. In November, Peck described Gap's store count as unprofitable. As of the end of last quarter, there were 1,242 Gap stores worldwide. 758 of them were in North America.On Thursday, the company said it will close 230 Gap stores over the next two years as part of its plan to "revitalize" the Gap brand. The closures will affect "specialty" Gap stores, which includes mall-based stores.Most of those stores will be in North America, Peck told analysts Thursday. Chief financial officer Teri Stoll added that the company focused on stores that were not delivering, were in the "wrong locations" or were not a "strategic fit."About 130 of those closures will happen this year, according to Gap. The company also plans to open Old Navy and Athleta locations. Athleta, which will be part of the new Gap company, is a women's athleisure chain that has been a success. Hill City launched last year as Gap's men's athleisure brand.Gap thinks it will save between 0 million and 0 million before taxes over the next two years because of its closure plans, according to a securities filing. It expects to finish splitting the companies in 2020.But some analysts questioned why promising brands such as Athleta and Hill City were included in NewCo with the struggling Gap brand."This could have been an opportunity for a fresh start for Gap," said Bob Phibbs, CEO of consultancy Retail Doctor. Darrel Meints, Idaho Fish and Game's deer and elk coordinator, thinks he knows."I'm guessing that deer has been fed based on its behavior,” Meints said. “I think she's going to see if you're going to throw her a handout."Deer that have been fed become habituated to humans, and what may begin as a seemingly compassionate act — feeding a hungry deer or two — can become a major nuisance for landowners."People will call us and the call will start out 'well, last week there was one or two deer in my yard and I felt a little sorry for them and I threw them a little hay and now there's 10 or 20 or 30 in my backyard, and they're eating all my shrubs and trees,' " said Meints. Getting that close to a deer is an interesting encounter to say the least, but feeding deer can actually increase their odds of dying, especially during winter."Mule deer don't do well eating alfalfa. They're browsers. They eat woody shrubs and trees and things of that nature. So, you can make them sick and they don't do well," Meints said.People who feed wildlife in high traffic areas like McCall, Idaho, greatly increase their likelihood of being hit by a car, which could kill the animal and cause thousands of dollars in damage. But that's not the only hazard habituated animals bring to humans and their pets. "When you have large numbers of animals like that, you will draw in predators like mountain lions or coyotes of that nature," said Meints.As tempting as it may be, these are just some of the many reasons biologists say, with the possible exception of song birds, feeding wild animals is a bad idea."Oftentimes people think they're doing the right thing and helping wildlife, but over the long run they're not. In fact, they could be doing more damage than good,” said Meints.During severe winters, fish and game departments perform emergency feeding operations, providing starving animals with the proper nutrition. 2378

From Italian ice to frozen custard, the Everetts family has been in the frozen dessert business for 25 years. Business has always been booming at the local hot spot, which is managed by Al Everetts and his son, Troy. But it was Troy's interest in the cannabis business that sparked an idea to grow their reach.“I was in the dispensary and I saw 20 grams of this, 20 grams of chocolate bars, and I was like, 'There's no frozen products,’" Troy Everetts says. Troy saw products containing cannabidiol (CBD), an active ingredient in cannabis derived from hemp plants. It's used to help treat anxiety, chronic pain and neurological disorders like epilepsy. As an oil from the cannabis plant, it usually only contains trace amounts of THC, but not nearly enough to get you high. So why not put CBD in their homemade Italian ice? Well, easier said than done. CBD oil isn't water soluble. "It's really hard, because it likes to float to the top and so it's really hard to get it mixed through the ice," says Marissa Foersch with Primal, a smoke and vape shop in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. CBD connoisseurs say there has to be some sort of fat in the product for the CBD to hold onto. "That's why a lot of people use coconut oil or ice cream and stuff like that," Al says.When the Everetts family pitched the idea of using Italian ice, there was a bit of skepticism among cannabis companies. "They were questioning us. They said, 'I don't think you're going to get the oil in the Italian ice in the water. You won't do it in a non-dairy product,’" Al recalls. But Al was up for the challenge. He spent a month using his Italian ice expertise to find a solution. The end product is 30 milligrams of CBD mixed into a cup of flavored ice. Flavors include lemon, cherry and mango. However, the process is under wraps. Right now, the father and son duo are working to move into a bigger facility across town to help meet the demand for their Mt. Everetts Frozen Creations products. "We had to expand from our little ice cream shop in the back to this, so it's amazing how we're growing," Al says.Al says the extra fridge space will soon be necessary as they're starting to hear from people all over the country. CBD stores in South Carolina, Florida, New York and Alaska are already on the list. But until then, they're focused on supplying the northeast."We're excited about it," Al says. "The response has been unbelievable."Their biggest fans are people who have relied on CBD for medical purposes. The Everetts' say that alone makes the hard work worth it."The other day there was an older man who said, 'I was in a lot of back pain' and he ate one, and he said his back wasn't hurting him anymore," Troy says. "And when we hear stuff like that, it's always awesome to hear that our product is helping someone." 2815

  

GARY, Indiana — An Indiana family is upset after their son was given a "Most Annoying" award at school. Eleven-year-old Akalis Castejon is autistic and non-verbal and works with special education teachers at Bailey Preparatory Academy in Gary, Indiana. Because he is non-verbal, he will often rock back and forth as he struggles to express himself. At the end-of-the-year lunch, his parents were shocked when a teacher handed the fifth-grader an award trophy labeled "Most Annoying Male." Other awards that were given out at the event had much more positive connotations, such as "Best Student" and "Most Improved."The boy's father, Rick Castejon, says he's grateful his son did not understand what was going on but wants an apology from the teacher. "When they called him up, he was just excited to get a gold star because it was shiny," Castejon said. House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler on Monday announced a sweeping investigation into President Donald Trump's campaign, businesses, transition and administration, a probe that would lay the groundwork for Democrats if they choose to pursue impeachment proceedings against the President.The Judiciary Committee on Monday sent letters to 81 people and entities — including the White House, the Justice Department, senior campaign officials, Trump Organization officials and the President's sons — marking the start of a broad investigation that will tackle questions that include possible obstruction of justice, hush-money payments to women, collusion with Russia and allegations of the President abusing his office and using it for personal gain.They are demanding responses within two weeks.The sprawling net cast by the committee also signals that the Democratic-led investigations are likely to stretch on for months, with multiple committees seeking information from senior officials in the White House, the Trump campaign and the Trump Organization.The evidence gathered in the investigation would be the basis of a possible impeachment proceeding, which the Judiciary Committee would lead, though Nadler has said it's too soon to be discussing impeachment."We do not now have the evidence all sorted out and everything to do an impeachment," Nadler said in an interview 1391
