Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, many schools are closing. Teachers across the country are getting creative, even taking their classrooms remote. Many schools across the country have canceled classes, but not all. Some have asked students to take their learning into their homes. One Colorado charter school is making it all happen and finding some benefits in the process. Math teacher Marilyn Hartzell has turned her kitchen into an at-home classroom.“Our group of schools decided that we would try to teach online,” Hartzell said.The school sent students home with Chrome Books in order to continue their education online.Aside from the location, the school day looks very much the same. Instead of classrooms, students are jumping from one Google chat class to the next.“I think for right now, because this is super new, the engagement is super high,” Hartzell said.There are some benefits about teaching remote.“It takes a lot longer to set up these assignments online, but in the end, the grading part and the ability to analyze the skills and what the kids are understanding is a lot faster,” Hartzell said.With technology comes challenges. Hartzell says it’s hard to ask students to fix their wifi. But, if technology fails all together, she has pre-recorded lessons and posted them on YouTube.While class for many students around the country has been postponed, Hartzell and her students are embracing remote school.“We are anticipating we probably won’t come back this school year,” she said.However, Hartzell wants everyone to keep in mind that although technology is a great tool, it doesn’t teach children. 1627
A pilot was pulled from the Hudson River after a helicopter crashed in the water near where the Lincoln Tunnel comes into Manhattan, authorities said.The pilot was the only person aboard the helicopter and was rescued by the New York Police Department's Aviation and Harbor unit, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the rescue.The pilot is expected to be OK, the source added.Video of the crash, recorded by Ashton Byrd, shows the aircraft descending toward the water with its nose down and its rotors moving. Across the country, 86 percent of police departments are dealing with an officer shortage. Half of those departments report the shortage has gotten worse in the last five years.“I grew up in a police family,” said Captain Nick Augustine with the Montgomery County Police Department. “I always saw the police car in the drive way, and it was always a career I wanted to go towards.”Augustine followed his father’s footsteps, put on a badge, and joined the force in 2001. He joined at a time when it was common to have legacy officers, meaning officers who were second or third generation police. However, with the declining number of people joining police departments, that has changed. “We may have one or two applicants who come from the law enforcement family that are actually applying to be a police officer,” said Augustine. As a captain in the Montgomery County Police Department, heading up the personnel division,Augustine has seen the shortage firsthand. The shortage in both legacy officers and the shortage in the number of people join the force altogether.The shortage at MCPD began in 2014. In August of that year, MCPD had 1,400 applicants for that academy class. The next class had only 600 applicants, which was a 58 percent reduction.“That was alarming,” said Augustine. “We were still able to fill our class at that point, but over the last couple of session, that has dropped where we haven’t been able to fill classes.”Any of the departments around the country, like Seattle and Miami, are dealing with shortages at a similar rate as MCPD. Adding to that, many departments are also seeing a rise in the number of officers resigning within the first five years on the job.“Looking at reasons why our numbers are dropping, the economy right now is very strong with low unemployment numbers,” explained Augustine. “Veterans--which we tend to have apply to be law enforcement officers--are now being offered private contracting jobs, which is paying higher than a government job.”Surveys from multiple police research organizations show recent controversial events and public perception of police officers have also played a role in the shortage.To combat this, departments have increased recruitment efforts. MCPD has place billboards outside their county and streamlined the police officer application process.“This is a rewarding career,” Augustine said. “You never know how many people you affect in the community by your actions.” 2463
