Seattle police have moved in to break up the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP) after Mayor Jenny Durkan issued an executive order early Wednesday morning declaring the gathering illegal.According to the Seattle Times and KOMO-TV, about a dozen protesters were arrested Wednesday morning as police ordered those present to leave the area.Demonstrators have occupied the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle for about three weeks. The protesters moved in earlier this month after police abandoned the department's East Precinct — which is located in the neighborhood — over fears of riots.While the occupation was largely peaceful for several weeks, the area has seen four shootings since June 20, some of them deadly.The protests began in the wake of the death of George Floyd, and were part of a nationwide protest movement against systemic racism and police brutality.Last month, CHOP leadership released a list of demands calling for the abolishment of the Seattle Police Department, a retrial for all people of color serving prison sentences for violent crime and the de-gentrification of the city, among other demands. 1138

SANTEE. Calif. (KGTV) - Two dogs have died after a fire broke out in an East County home.The fire broke out at a home on Big Rock Road and Rancho Fanita Drive just before 2 p.m. Wednesday. The fire started in the home's kitchen, according to Santee Fire Department crews.Neighbors said they first saw smoke and though the fire was in a large field behind the home, before realizing it was in a corner of the house.One neighbor reportedly ran over and called the home's owner, who was not home but told the neighbor her dogs were inside. The neighbor broke a window out and tried to get into the home to save the dogs but was pushed back because of the thick smoke.Santee Fire arrived and broke into the back of the home to put out the blaze. Crews found the dogs and performed CPR and gave them oxygen but they had already died.Crews said the neighbor was right not to enter the home if the smoke was as bad as described. The cause of the fire is under investigation.The owner of the home reportedly lives there with her daughter and son-in-law. 1073

SANTA ANA (KGTV and CNS) - Authorities say five people were killed Sunday afternoon when a small plane crashed near a Santa Ana shopping center. The crash happened around 12:29 p.m. in the parking lot of the Staples Supercenter on the 3800 block of South Bristol Street. No one on the ground was hurt. As the plane barreled through the parking lot, it struck at least one unoccupied car, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi said. A nearby intersection was closed in all four directions near the crash. The parking lot is shared by Staples, a CVS drug store, a Michaels' decorations store, and a Wells Fargo Bank branch. The crash site is about one mile northwest of the northern end of the runway at John Wayne Orange County Airport. 781

Sears Holdings will close another 63 Kmart and Sears stores following the 2017 holiday shopping season.On Thursday, the company made the announcement to employees at the affected stores, which span 26 states.The closings affect 45 Kmart stores and 18 Sears stores. SEATTLE, Wash – Amazon announced Tuesday that it would be launching a billion venture capital fund to invest in companies that are building products, providing services and creating technology to decarbonize the economy and protect the planet from climate change.The company hopes The Climate Pledge Fund will enable it and other companies to meet The Climate Pledge, a commitment to be net carbon neutral by 2040.Amazon co-founded The Climate Pledge with Global Optimism last year. Since then, companies like Verizon, Reckitt Benckiser, and Infosys have also taken the pledge.“The Climate Pledge Fund will look to invest in the visionary entrepreneurs and innovators who are building products and services to help companies reduce their carbon impact and operate more sustainably,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO. “Companies from around the world of all sizes and stages will be considered, from pre-product startups to well-established enterprises. Each prospective investment will be judged on its potential to accelerate the path to zero carbon and help protect the planet for future generations.”Amazon says the billion will be used to invest in companies in multiple industries, including transportation and logistics, energy generation, storage and utilization, manufacturing and materials, circular economy, and food and agriculture.Over time, Amazon says it will also look for opportunities to involve other Climate Pledge signatories in this venture investment program.“Amazon has demonstrated its leadership in adopting low carbon technologies at scale,” said Rivian CEO R.J.
