SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The oldest San Diego women's choir is scrambling to raise funds for a last-second trip to sing at the Pearl Harbor Memorial Ceremony. The Choral Club of San Diego dazzled crowds from veterans homes to Spreckles Organ Pavillion. They've been singing since 1939."It was a very private women's group. They all got together in their homes and they had tea," Executive Director Caron Andregg said, painting the picture of what the club looked like back then. In 2012, they officially became a 501(c)(3) non-profit and over the past five years they've been tuning to a more modern note."We've filtered out a lot of the older traditional music and we started filtering in more modern music," Andregg said.She said the crowds have loved it and they've ran with it, gaining notoriety and ultimately an invite to the Pearl Harbor Memorial Ceremony. Andregg added someone personally recommended the club to the organizers of the event on Honolulu."Getting 25 ladies to Hawaii is no small task," Music Director Kyle Adam Blair said. The group has been frantically making calls for two weeks, but are not gaining any traction."I can't even get people to pick up their phones ... That's why we're panicking and asking you for help," Andregg said.The club is stepping in after an East Coast choir suffered a misfortune and couldn't perform.Andregg said they are honored for the opportunity to be the only vocal ensemble."We're from a Navy town and we have a relationship with the Midway and we have relationships with other Naval outlets, we've performed for Naval ceremonies," she said.The group needs to raise ,000 in a month so they can book the flights and lodging for the choir members. 1706

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Unified School District is releasing an update on the next phases of its plan to reopen schools for in-person learning.The current plan to begin Phase Two for elementary school students is after the winter break on Jan. 4, said SDUSD Board President John Lee Evans.Middle and high Schools will start Jan. 25, at the beginning of the third academic quarter, said Evans.Elementary students will be divided between morning and afternoon sessions to allow for social distancing in the classroom. Middle and high school students will attend in person sessions, two days per week.All families will have the option to continue distance learning, said Evans."What can throw this plan off track? There are two main factors," said Evans. "Number one, lack of success of controlling the virus in phase one -- which we don't believe will happen; or two, external conditions of the virus in the community.""I would like to make an appeal to our community to assist us in reopening our schools," said Evans. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This month, thousands will pay tribute to a civil rights icon in one of the nation's largest MLK parades.The 40th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade steps off on Jan. 19, bringing floats, high school bands and drill teams, colleges, churches, and many more to Harbor Drive to honor the work of Dr. King. African Americans were denied loans from banks, housing outside of segregated neighborhoods, and refused entrance by some business owners, the authors wrote.Nonetheless, King's presence in town was well-regarded by those who watched him speak at San Diego State College (now San Diego State University) and California Western University (now Point Loma Nazarene University). One witness recalls King, “was very warm … very genuine [and] seemed to be very caring and sincere ... He spoke to me as though I was someone he was very familiar with.”In his CWU speech, King is quoted as saying:"And may I say to you, my friends, that I still have faith in the future. I know these are difficult moments and so many of us are faced with problems day in and day out. And I know that we are still at the bottom of the economic ladder, still the last hired and the first fired. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Police Department this October is offering a gun buyback day.Those who sell their guns will be offered either a gift card or a skateboard. Participants will receive 0 for rifles, shotguns and hand guns and 0 for assault weapons, “no questions asked.”There is a limit of two gift cards per vehicle and authorities say all weapons must be operational.
