When COVID-19 became a public health emergency this past spring, it caused widespread problems for supply chains that moved food from manufacturers to your local grocery store.Six months after the pandemic started, consumers are still finding several popular food items hard to find.The company that produces "Peeps" (Just Born in Pennsylvania) recently announced that it will not have Halloween or Christmas versions of the popular marshmallow treat this year. The company shut down temporarily for the pandemic and that will also affect the holiday offering of its "Hot Tamales" and "Ike and Mike" fruit candies."I don't think the consumer will know when they walk into a supermarket what is short and what is not short because so many things are disrupted," said John Phillip Tarantino Jr., president of Tarantino Foods, LLC in Buffalo.Tarantino Foods is a wholesale food distributor with 2,000 customers that includes colleges, casinos, restaurants, and pizzerias.The company president told 7 Eyewitness News Reporter Ed Reilly that his business is having a hard time finding many items such as french fries, California dates, certain types of cheese, frozen bread, bread crumbs, ketchup, Kraft ranch dressing, macaroni and cheese, McCormick spices, and packets of hot sauce - to name a few.It is a difficult situation for food service suppliers as retail demand in grocery stores exploded during the crisis and forced manufacturers to redirect their efforts. Some less-profitable items are not being produced. Pasta and flavored drinks have seen those reductions.Tarantino said consumers were looking to buy anything they could stockpile, such as Campbell soups and frozen vegetables.Shut down of food plants with workers afraid of the virus started the problem which increased to a "tsunami" with surging demand by shoppers. That situation was made even more complicated by a severe shortage of product packaging materials. Tarantino said he believes that to be one of the reasons why some food products are having a hard time getting to the shelves currently.The family-owned business is recommending people take advantage of the WNY harvest season to stock-up on corn, tomatoes, and squash. Not only is it plentiful and cheap, but there could be produce problems coming soon as workers are not able to pick citrus and row crops, like lettuce and broccoli, on the West Coast due to the wildfires, added Tarantino.Some viewers asked why canned pumpkin is so hard to find?7 Eyewitness News contacted Libby's and received the following response:"The team in Illinois is currently working hard harvesting Libby’s pumpkins and canning for the upcoming season. We typically begin shipping to retailers around this time for bake season, so you can expect to see pumpkin back on shelves over the next few weeks."Wegmans also sent a statement regarding the shortage of some items:"There are certain products that are still in high demand, for example, cleaning supplies and paper products. While we continue to get shipments of these products to our stores, we are on allocation from the manufacturers. We have purchase limits on these high-demand products to best serve the needs of as many customers as possible."The National Grocers Association sent the following shopping tip:"Consumers should plan ahead of their trip to the store, make a list and purchase what they need for the time, as well as check on the store’s website or social media pages ahead of their trip as stores will communicate important information on product availability and additional tips." FONTANA, Calif. -- Metal scrappers aren’t making as much money as what they used to. “A long time ago we got maybe 14 or 15 bucks,” Harry Sawyer said. “But now we get maybe .” Sawyer has been scrapping metal for more than a decade and says he’s never seen prices this low. “I don’t feel good about it,” he said. “I don’t feel good about it.” Workers at American Metal Recycling in Southern California say the prices started dropping soon after international tariffs hit. “We are talking anywhere between 0 to what it is now a ton,” said metal buyer Erick Valdez. “So, it’s half price. It’s pretty bad.” Valdez says all metals – including steel, aluminum and copper – were all hit hard. “There’s really nothing that made it through pretty good through these tariff wars,” he said. Everything was messed with.” With less money to make, Valdez is seeing less people recycling metal. “Before we’d recognize what their name was – first and last name,” he said. “Now we’re like, ‘what’s your name again?’” So why should you care if metal scrappers are making less money? Well, international economists say when prices are raised by tariffs – that increase in cost is passed to consumers – and ultimately hurts other parts of the economy. “There have been some analysts that say for every steel job you save, you loss 16 in the rest of the economy,” said Walter Hutchins, J.D. M.A., a professor of global business at the University of Redlands. “If the regular Joe is union worker for US Steel, he may or she may have gotten some kind temporary benefit from the tariffs,” he said. “But when that same worker goes to buy a F-150 pickup or his pension fund has shares of Ford Motor Company stock in it, that average Joe could be quite harmed.” While the sticker shock might be driving some scrappers away, other metal industries say they are flourishing. “You can be a high school dropout and you can still make 0,000 in my industry,” said Randy McClure, who owns and operates the Welding Skills Test and Training Center in Rancho Cucamonga. Though he’s seeing the price change in metals, McClure is also seeing the demand change for work. “I don’t know if it’s more work because the tariffs came in but there is more work than there are people to do the work,” he said. “Not having enough workers is a bigger problem than the tariffs. That’s for sure.” But for the scrappers out there on the streets and the workers recycling the metal, the small payoff could impact this industry’s future big time. 2530

One expert at the University of Colorado says they do help provide certain information that your doctor may not have, like how long you're sleeping every night. But there are other things sleep apps can't do. “Where they fall short is when they're sort of estimating your sleep stages,” says Christopher Depner, a sleep expert at the University of Colorado. “That's gonna be your light sleep, your REM sleep and your deep sleep. In some people they're accurate, in other people they're less than 50% accurate. So, for right now, we really can't use them medically to assess sleep staging.” If an app alerts you that you're getting less than seven hours of sleep, talk to your doctor. These sleep apps are not actual medical diagnostic devices because they're not approved by the FDA. That's not to say they won't ever be approved, but right now, app makers are having a hard time getting the green light.The same applies to any other app that intends to treat other conditions. 1391

  

CHICAGO, Ill. – The fight against domestic violence has found a new warrior in a surprising place – the hair salon. And now, more and more states are looking to stylists to spot the signs of victimization. For Joan Rowan, who has been in the salon business for 44 years, the bond between hair stylist and client is strong. “It's a very intimate relationship,” said Rowan. Over the years, she says she’s heard the intimations many times before. “’He'd kill me if he knew how much money I spent. No, you can't cut my hair too short. My husband doesn't like it.’ Those kinds of answers. Suddenly you're asking them like are you OK?” It’s those in-chair conversations that drove her 20 years ago to start training her own staff to recognize the signs of domestic abuse. “They all knew stories and heard it all before. They had had clients who came bruised or hair missing,” said Rowan. Many clients she said appeared sad or afraid. In 2017, Illinois became the first state to require all cosmetologists and salon professionals to complete a one-hour, one-time education course on how to spot the signs of domestic violence and sexual assault. They look for evidence of physical abuse like bruises and cuts or outward behaviors like self-blame, sudden lifestyle changes, and irregular appointments. The law, which went into effect this year, impacted more than 84,000 licensed cosmetologists and estheticians in the state. “We are not trained as reporters or anything like that,” explained Rowan. “All we do is give them a phone number that they can call if they need help.” According to the Professional Beauty Association, Illinois, Arkansas and California, have already passed laws mandating domestic abuse training for cosmetology school students or current salon professionals. Since last year, another six including, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Texas, have attempted to pass similar legislation. For salon owner Susanne Post, it’s personal. “Part of my story is that I’m a survivor of domestic violence myself,” said Post. Two years ago, she helped create a domestic violence training program for Nashville stylists. She says she’s hopeful that her home state of Tennessee will pass a law similar to other states. "In Tennessee, we are the fifth in the nation at the rate that women are killed by men, which is just unbelievable,” she said. “It affects one in four women, and one in seven men.” Joan Rowan says she’s proud to have been part of genesis of the training and the laws that are now spreading to help protect both men and women. “It has saved lives,” Rowan said. “It's real. And it doesn't have to be. And we can all help people get out of trouble.” 2725
