SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The first new hospital tower in 40 years in the South Bay could have a major impact addressing a shortage of beds in the region, officials say. Sharp Health Care is set to open its 106 bed Ocean View Tower this week in central Chula Vista. It is adjacent to the 243 bed Sharp Chula Vista original tower, which has seen an overflow due to a growing South Bay with too much demand for health care. "There's about 4,000 new homes in this area that have been built, so more and more we are going to have to provide health care for that population," said Pablo Velez, the hospital's chief executive. While the South Bay has experienced rapid growth, most of the new hospitals have been constructed in North San Diego, where there are higher paying patients, Velez said. At an open house Saturday, more than one thousand South Bay residents got a first look inside the hospital. Each room will be private, with big screen high definition televisions, large bathrooms, USB ports in beds, and local art. The hospital boasts a top floor cafeteria and large family waiting rooms. "I always go to Sharp, and my dad already knows the doctors here and the nurses because he's been in and out a lot of times since early last year," said Cesar Gonzales, an Eastlake resident who came to the open house with his 92-year-old father, a Sharp Chula Vista patient. The hospital cost 4 million to build. Construction began in November 2016. 1452

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Tens of thousands of unemployed San Diegans are about to see the biggest chunk of their income disappear. That's because the extra 0 in weekly unemployment payments from the Federal Government are expiring this month. The loss will reduce the maximum weekly unemployment paymeny to the 0 that comes from the state. City Heights resident Abby Heilbron is about to see her weekly checks go from ,050 to 0. Heilbron, whose husband is still working full time, said a dozen of her friends moved out of San Diego during the pandemic, unable to afford the region's high cost of living."And it is going to be a really scary time for a lot of people here, very quickly," Heilbron said. The extra 0 was part of the Federal stimulus package passed by Congress and the president in late March. The state Employment Development Department says the payments will end July 25. Whether to extend the benefits is now a political issue on Capitol Hill. The loss of the income comes when San Diego County restaurants are not allowed to serve indoors, meaning one of the area's biggest sectors is not hiring. "I've heard the argument that this gives people the incentive not to work, but the problem is that there are fewer alternatives for those people to go work at," said Alan Gin, an economist at the University of San Diego. The San Diego Association of Governments estimates 240,000 San Diegans are unemployed. The San Diego Workforce Partnership is offering free job placement services and coaching for those looking for new employment. 1564

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The 19th annual True Blue Luncheon celebrated the bravery shown by three officers who shared their experience in the Rolando shooting almost a year later. The very shield that protected Officers Francisco Roman and Dan Bihum was at the luncheon, helping SD Police Foundation donors understand what their money is going toward. The shield is hefty, with a steel plate inside, according to Officer Trevor Philip.Bihum said he saw two bright flashes, "two of the rounds struck me." "He literally fell right in front of me it was probably one of the hardest moments of my life," Roman said.RELATED: Body camera video shows San Diego Police shooting in RolandoThat night, June 23, 2018, the distress call from a neighbor concerned about Joe Darwish turned into a gunfight injuring two officers and ultimately ending with Darwish's death. The shield was handed to Roman and Bihum while they were trapped in the hallway."As soon as Francisco got the shield in front of them he took another volley of gunfire and two of the rounds hit the shield," a SWAT Officer said."Just a great feeling because we had some form of protection," Roman said. Both officers struggled to share, as they relived the moments on that day."The shield absolutely saved our life," Roman said tearing up. He looked away, clenched his jaw and continued, "it definitely saved us for sure."Thursday, they shared their story with a room full of donors in the Harbor Island Sheraton. Their goal is in sharing their trauma, they hoped to inspire San Diegans to open their wallets and help them buy 758 more shields so that their brothers and sisters in blue are protected. The money raised by the luncheon goes to the San Diego Police Foundation, who helps buy whatever the department needs. In 2018, the luncheon raised 0,000. This year they hope to raise 5,000.The 19-year tradition has a new name and has been filling the gap between city funds and SDPD's needs. 1957

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The homeless population in San Diego County has decreased over the last year, according to a San Diego task force.  Every year, the county conducts a tally of how many people are homeless on a single night in January. This year’s count, done on January 26, was coordinated by the Regional Task Force on the Homeless. The task force says the number of homeless throughout the county has decreased six percent to 8,576. However, the number of homeless veterans went up to 1,300 - a 24 percent increase. Supervisor Ron Roberts, the Homeless Task Force Chairman, says permanent housing still needs to be a priority. “Seeing the overall number decline was a positive reversal, but there are far too many swings in data to declare a trend or to not see other areas where we need to increase our focus,” said San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts, who chairs the RTFH. “We continue to face many challenges, highlighted by a lack of new housing, a condition that squeezes hardest those with the fewest resources."RELATED: Volunteers count number of homeless living in San DiegoThe numbers from the federally-mandated Point-in-Time Count (PITC) show the number of sheltered and unsheltered homeless people in each of the county’s 18 cities, as well as in unincorporated areas. The County will present the full report, with a more in-depth analysis of the data, to the task force at 3 p.m.The PITC is meant to help communities and policymakers understand their regions’ most current challenges and areas with the most pressing need for limited funding. 1594

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Supporters of labor unions rallied across the country on Saturday ahead of a Supreme Court case that could effect how unions collect agency fees. One was held in downtown San Diego outside the California Democratic Convention, where hundreds of union supporters gathered for the “Working People’s Day of Action” event. Demonstrators were supporting the union AFSCME, which is engaged in a court battle that has made its way to the Supreme Court. In Janus v. AFSCME, the Supreme Court will decide whether it is legal for unions, which often donate to political causes, to compel members to agency fees. Those fees are collected by unions from employees who have opted not to join the union but still benefit from collective bargaining. The plaintiff, Mark Janus, has argued it violates his first amendment rights to pay fees to an organization that he disagrees with politically. A ruling in his favor could have wide-reaching effects on public sector labor unions around the country, argues famed labor organizer, Dolores Huerta. “That is going to be very devastating to our unions here in California,” said Huerta, if the court sides with Janus. 1213
