Elliott Broidy, a venture capitalist and fundraiser for President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, is suing Qatar, saying they planted news stories in national newspapers that smeared him.Broidy alleges the Middle Eastern nation targeted him because of his ties to its rival, United Arab Emirates, and his criticism of Qatar. He says operatives from the country hacked his emails, fabricated some of their details and leaked them to major news outlets, resulting in negative news stories over the last month about international connections he had and ties to Russian companies.The complaint -- and those news stories central to Broidy's allegations -- touch on a possible thread of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, which is looking into foreign influence around some top Trump officials.The embassy of Qatar said the lawsuit is an attempt to divert attention from media reports and is without merit."Mr. Broidy's lawsuit is a transparent attempt to divert attention from US media reports about his activities," a statement from Jassim Al-Thani, Media Attache for the State of Qatar in Washington DC, said."His lawsuit is without merit or fact. It is Mr. Broidy, not Qatar, who orchestrated nefarious activities designed to influence Congress and American foreign policy. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- It was a murder-mystery that gripped San Diego County. The family of 12-year-old Stephanie Crowe, waking up on the morning of January 21, 1998, to a horrifying discovery.Stephanie - lying dead on her Escondido bedroom floor in a pool of blood, after being stabbed multiple times.Her family told detectives they were asleep inside the house when the murder happened and heard nothing. Detectives say they found no signs that someone forced their way inside.The investigation and court battles that followed would change the way law enforcement collects evidence and performs interrogations."It was a case where there were clearly major problems with the investigation," said Brad Patton, Richard Tuite's criminal defense attorney. "The problems with the investigation related to the crime scene."Patton spoke with 10News on Thursday, nearly 20 years after Stephanie's death. He told 10News the problems surround the case were how police collected evidence and how detectives interrogated suspects. Problems that caused the case to turn cold - letting Stephanie's true killer continue to walk the streets in San Diego County.  "I don't think the Crowe family will ever get closure," Patton said. Who killed Stephanie Crowe?In the months after her death, Stephanie's 14-year-old brother, Michael and two of his friends would be charged with the murder. A knife was found under the bed of John Treadway. Both he and Stephanie's brother Michael later confessed to detectives during videotaped interrogations.The boys were subjected to intense, prolonged questioning and deprived of food and sleep. The confessions were later judged to be coerced and the charges were dropped. Then, a new suspect. Richard Tuite. He was a transient and diagnosed schizophrenic. Brad Patton was his defense attorney. Tuite was seen in the Escondido neighborhood that night - banging on doors, looking for an old girlfriend. Most damning of all, he was seen wearing a sweatshirt with Stephanie's blood on it. "Mr. Tuite could not, did not, go into that house. There was no forensic evidence of him being in that house," Patton said. There were no hairs, no fibers, no DNA. Tuite claimed he found the sweatshirt while dumpster-diving. Tuite was convicted and would spend more than a decade behind bars. Then, he got an appeal.  An appeal where he was found not guilty of voluntary manslaughter. Stephanie's parents never suspected her brother. Years ago, her mom had this to say to 10News, after Tuite was cleared:"I just hope that North County is aware that he's going to be out walking the streets and that people lock their doors."The murder of Stephanie Crowe is still unsolved.Patton says there's only one way he sees the mystery solved. "You're probably never going to find the actual killer unless that person comes forward at some time," he said. The Crowe family has since moved to the Pacific Northwest. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- One week after a training accident that ended in the death of racehorse Bobby Abu Dhabi, Victor Espinoza is opening up about his recovery.Espinoza, a Hall of Fame jockey, suffered a fractured vertebra when he was thrown from the horse after it went into apparent cardiac arrest in Del Mar. The four-year-old horse died.RELATED: Injured jockey Victor Espinoza to miss rest of Del Mar meet"I was just working my normal routine and then just...something just happens," Espinoza said. "So it was a bit of a different accident than what (I've had) over the years." The 46-year-old jockey remembers thinking that he might be paralyzed after the July 22 fall. He said his body was numb, and he could only move his right arm. "The first time I ever cry, (was) when I first started moving my right leg, when I got on the ambulance and then by the time I got to the hospital, I started moving my left leg." Scans showed that Espinoza fractured his C3 vertebrae in the accident and had damage to his cerebral artery. Doctors told him that he got lucky.  Espinoza will be in a neck brace for six weeks. He told 10News his goal is to make a full recovery - but right now there is no guarantee that will happen."I can't move my neck at all, and I wear (the brace) and it's hard for me to balance because I can't see down," he said, noting that he still has numbness in his left arm. Right now, it is too soon to know if he will be able to return to racing - a sport in which he earned a Triple Crown on American Pharoah in 2015.  He's also a three time Kentucky Derby winner.When asked if he would be scared to race again he said, " I can't predict the future, how I'm going to feel at that moment."  1807

Election offices across the country are making preparations to ensure everything is ready for a smooth voting process. A crucial piece to make sure that happens is recruiting enough poll workers for Election Day."The majority of poll workers are over age 60, and so, often in some of those higher risk categories for complications for COVID-19. So in the primaries this year we saw a lot of challenges getting poll workers," said Ben Hovland, Chairman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. Hovland says, in years past, most poll workers have been retirees volunteering their entire day and doing an important civic duty at polling places.During this summer's primaries, as COVID-19 cases rose, cities and states nationwide had some difficulty retaining poll workers. So much so, that the U.S. Election Assistance Commission launched National Poll Worker Recruitment Day."We created a website Helpamericavote.gov. If you go there you can choose your county and jurisdiction in the drop down menu and it can get you to your local election official and you can sign up if you want. But again, we’re seeing a number of places that still need poll workers," said Hovland.In Madison, Wisconsin, more than 1,000 poll workers canceled their volunteer shift for the primary and an August election. But then, something extraordinary happened. The city had more people sign up to be poll workers than ever before."We heard from a lot of people who said, 'I’m signing up to work at the polls because my grandma usually does and my mom usually does and can’t right now because of COVID, so I want to fill that spot.' We had to stop taking applications, which we’ve never had to do before," said Madison's City Clerk, Maribel Witzel-Behl. Witzel-Behl says during the last three presidential elections they had 3,000 poll workers. Now, they have 6,000 signed up. Many are local college students or people who were given the day off by their employer in order to participate in the presidential election."Now, almost 4,000 of those 6,000 poll workers are first-time poll workers and so that’s a pretty amazing thing to think about," said Witzel-Behl. Witzel-Behl says extra workers will help them be "pandemic proof" on Election Day. Poll workers are instructed to follow strict health guidelines, which include not having a fever within the last few days or showing any symptoms of COVID-19.Now that so many are signed up, the City of Madison will be conducting 50 new poll worker virtual training sessions to get them ready for the big day. Officials hope this boost in volunteers gives a renewed and longstanding interest for civic engagement."We're glad that the poll workers who have been in place for decades and may have a greater risk for COVID-19 don't have to feel bad about staying home and sitting this one out. That there are plenty of people to fill in and they're able to stay safe because we want our whole community to be safe," said Witzel-Behl.The U.S. Election Assistance Commission says there are also other ways people can contribute to a smooth Election Day. This includes being prepared to vote, simply by ensuring you're at the correct polling place, bringing the proper identification and making sure your address information is updated."That means you're in the polling place less time. That means shorter lines behind you. It's good for you, it's good for poll workers and it's good for election officials," said Hovland.Hovland says always check with your local election office for the most accurate information and to sign up to be a poll worker. 3574

Evidence of Russian meddling in the 2016 election is "now really incontrovertible," White House National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster said Saturday."As you can see with the FBI indictment, the evidence is now really incontrovertible and available in the public domain, whereas in the past it was difficult to attribute for a couple of reasons," McMaster said while speaking at the Munich Security Conference just a day after the Justice Department announced several indictments in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference.  570
