BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman on Friday called for concerted efforts from Japan to maintain relations between the two countries.Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu made the remarks following Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan's policy speech Friday, in which he reiterated Japan's territorial claim over the Diaoyu Islands.Ma said the Diaoyu islands and its adjacent islets have been Chinese territory since ancient times.Japan illegally detained Chinese fishermen and seized ship in waters off the Diaoyu Islands and insisted on performing a so-called domestic judicial procedure. Such moves were "absurd, illegal and invalid," Ma said.As a neighbor of Japan, China has always attached importance to developing bilateral ties with Japan, Ma said."I hope Japan will work with China to jointly maintain relations between the two countries," Ma said.In the speech at the opening of an extraordinary Diet session on Friday, Naoto Kan also said amicable ties between Japan and China were vital not only for the two nations but also for the peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

NANJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday urged China to keep moving down the path of sustainable development and put greater emphasis on social equity and environmental sustainability.Addressing students of Nanjing University in east China's Jiangsu Province, Ban said as the world's most populous country with the fastest growing economy, China has become the world's largest manufacturer and exporter but also the greatest emitter of greenhouse gases."Seven of the world's 10 most-polluted cities are in China. Your environmental footprint is growing daily," Ban said, adding that fortunately China is beginning to fight the side-effects of prosperity -- climate change and environmental degradation -- besides poverty. The UN chief noted that many of these development problems were raised during discussions as Chinese leaders recently met to draw the 12th Five-Year Plan for economic and social development of the country from 2010 to 2015.Ban applauded the Chinese government's goal of leading the country into an all-around Xiaokang society, or well-off society, by 2020 and said making Xiaokang a reality will, perhaps, ultimately become China's "great export -- its gift to humankind.""You already have a concept for it... Let China be the country to show the way ahead. Let China show the world how to live comfortably, in harmony with the environment while leaving none of its citizens behind," Ban said."China is serious about sustainable development. We all need to get serious about sustainable development," he added. On the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) talks, Ban said he is pleased to see progress in adaptation, technological cooperation and steps to reduce deforestation, but he has concerns over the slow progress in setting mitigation targets, monitoring, verification and the future of the Kyoto Protocol. The UN chief called on all governments to work together in a spirit of compromise and common sense in pushing forward UNFCCC progress during the Cancun meeting in December.Ban was in Nanjing for a short visit after attending the Summit Forum held on the closing day of the Shanghai World Expo. He received an Honorary Doctorate in Laws from Nanjing University.Ban began his China visit on Saturday and is expected to leave on Wednesday.

BEIJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- China has sent a strong signal that it would boost regional peace, stability and development in the spirit of cooperation and unity at the fifth East Asia Summit, said Qin Yaqing, deputy director of the Chinese Foreign Affairs University, in an exclusive interview with Xinhua here on Sunday."The most impressive part of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's attending the series of summits is the increasing number of bilateral diplomatic dialogues, all of which are quite significant, such as his meeting with Indian and Vietnamese leaders," Qin saidQin notedd, while meeting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Wen told his counterpart the world is large enough for both China and India to develop. His words carried a lot of weight and proved to the world that there was no fundamental conflict of interests for China and India to grow and prosper at the same time.Additionally, while meeting with General-Secretary of the Central Committee of the Vietnamese Communist Party Nong Duc Manh and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Wen called for proper handling of the South China Sea issue. He suggested the two sides draw experiences from the successful demarcation of their land boarder and solve the disputes on the South China Sea issue through negotiations.Qin said Wen's talks with Vietnamese leaders reaffirmed China's position on solving the issue through dialogue and consultation without resorting to the threat of force, which was intended to have a demonstrative effect to other countries concerned. In his remarks between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at the 13th summit, Premier Wen also said cooperation between China and the ASEAN nations is "most pragmatic, most extensive and most fruitful."Commenting on Wen's words, Qin said links between China and the ASEAN nations have seen a rather fast-paced development, especially in economy and trade, which is seen as quite extraordinary."It is unthinkable that the trade volume could rise from several billion U.S. dollars in 1991 to over 200 billion this year in such a short time. And this kind of pragmatic cooperation has lifted the Eastern Asian economies out of the shadow of the financial crisis," he added.China and the ASEAN countries established "a strategic partnership for peace and prosperity" in 2003, and the two sides also inaugurated their free trade zone early this year. The establishment of the free trade zone has helped to boost trade relations between the two sides.According to the official Chinese data, the first nine months of this year has brought the total bilateral trade volume to 211.31 billion U.S. dollars, a 43.7 percent spike compared to the same period last year.Qin also said China has generated trade deficits with the ASEAN nations in recent years, which has displayed China's principle of "taking less and giving more."In Qin's mind, these achievements have not only dispelled the concerns of certain ASEAN nations, but also benefited their development.
