NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A veteran wounded in the line of duty, who was told he would never run again, is gearing up to run a marathon in Nashville.Randy Woodward, of Smyrna, Tennessee is in the process of running 10 marathons in five weeks.He will complete each 26.2-mile run while carrying an 8-foot-by-5-foot American flag.“It’s been really great,” said Woodward.  “It will be something to look back on and say you did it. You finished it.”Woodward has already completed marathons in Kansas City, Missouri; Des Moines, Iowa; Lexington, Virginia; Arlington, Virginia; Savannah, Georgia and Bowling Green, Ohio. He has plans to run in future events in Louisville, Kentucky; Fort Benning, Georgia and another in Nashville.Woodward was on his second tour in Iraq when he was hit by a roadside bomb. He spent nine months in hospitals recovering.  At the time, doctors told him he would never run again.“Fortunately, I have all my limbs,” said Woodward.  “I’m blessed and thankful for that.”Woodward was awarded a Purple Heart for his bravery.Having run a marathon before his injury, Woodward was determined to run again. After recovering, he set his sights on the bold decision to run back-to-back marathons over the course of consecutive weeks.At each stop, Woodward’s efforts and his American flag have been getting a lot of attention.“I got just an outpouring of support from people,” said Woodward.  “It’s been really great.”Woodward said the reason he is running is to spread patriotism, and he hopes his efforts inspire others.“There is just so much divide in this country, and there is so much hate,” Woodward said.   1709

Miss USA has apologized after comments she made about two fellow Miss Universe contestants' English-language abilities sparked backlash online.In a live Instagram video posted on Wednesday, 24-year-old contestant Sarah Rose Summers said that Miss Vietnam H'Hen Nie is "so cute and she pretends to know so much English and then you ask her a question after having a whole conversation with her and she (nods and smiles)."Summers, who was joined in the video by Miss Colombia, Valeria Morales and Miss Australia, Francesca Hung, was attending the Miss Universe pageant in Thailand, which is scheduled to begin on Sunday in Bangkok.Later on in the video Summers appeared to express sympathy for Miss Cambodia, Rern Sinat, who she said, "doesn't speak any English and not a single other person speaks her language.""Can you imagine? MUSKEGON, Mich. - Organizing school supplies such as crayons, notebooks, and folders then packing them into backpacks is a labor of love for Muskegon sisters Payton and Madelyn Chittenden.“If you see something wrong, you should at least try to fix it,” said Payton.The sisters are working to make a difference for students this school year.“We donate school supplies to kids that… can’t afford it,” said Madelyn.In July, FOX17 introduced the sisters and their mission to collect school supplies for their classmates with families impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.They figured they would be able to pack a few dozen backpacks, but as the donations picked up so did the project’s impact.“It’s just making those kids smile and not worry about the coronavirus,” said Melissa Chittenden, mom.Melissa says monetary and supply donations have added to over ,000, which is enough to create more than 950 backpacks for kindergarten through fourth-grade students at Reeths Puffer Schools, Muskegon Public Schools, Holton Public Schools, and Fruitport Community Schools.That’s 15 to 25 kits per grade at each district’s elementary schools.“It means so much to me as a parent that this is what my kids are focusing on during a time with the corona, they’re not really worried about catching the germs, they’re worried about what can we do to make this a better place?” said Melissa.Teachers will distribute the kits to their students once classes start.Payton and Madelyn believe it could connect students during a year in which not much can be shared and teach them all a lesson of love.“It doesn’t matter if you’re helping a little or a lot, you’re still changing the world,” said Madelyn.“It will help them learn and they will know that they’re special and someone cares about them,” said Payton.Marisa Oberle from WXMI in Grand Rapids, Michigan first reported this story. 1876

Now, scientists say they've discovered “zombie cicadas.”It's a playful name from researchers at West Virginia University, who say they've found that a parasitic fungus, called Massospora, can play mind games on cicadas, causing them to infect others.Researcher showed that the psychedelic fungus can manipulate male cicadas into flicking their wings like females – a mating call – which tempts unsuspecting male cicadas and infects them.The fungus contains chemicals like those found in hallucinogenic mushrooms, according to research published in the journal PLOS Pathogens.“Essentially, the cicadas are luring others into becoming infected because their healthy counterparts are interested in mating,” said Brian Lovett, study co-author and post-doctoral researcher with the Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design. “The bioactive compounds may manipulate the insect to stay awake and continue to transmit the pathogen for longer.”The authors of the study compared the effects of the fungus to a “B-horror movie.” Massospora spores gnaw away at a cicada’s genitals, butt and abdomen, replacing them with fungal spores. Then, Lovett says they “wear away like an eraser on a pencil.”Lovett also compared the transmission of the behavior-modifying virus to rabies. He says both rabies and entomopathogenic fungi enlist their living hosts for successful “active host transmission.”“When you're infected with rabies, you become aggressive, you become afraid of water and you don't swallow,” Lovett said. “The virus is passed through saliva and all of those symptoms essentially turn you into a rabies-spreading machine where you're more likely to bite people."In that sense, Lovett says many of us are familiar with active host transmission.“Since we are also animals like insects, we like to think we have complete control over our decisions and we take our freewill for granted,” he said. “But when these pathogens infect cicadas, it's very clear that the pathogen is pulling the behavioral levers of the cicada to cause it to do things which are not in the interest of the cicada but is very much in the interest of the pathogen.”Researchers say cicada nymphs could encounter Massospora in their 17th year as they emerge from the ground to molt into adults or on their way down to feed on roots for 17 years.“The fungus could more or less lay in wait inside its host for the next 17 years until something awakens it, perhaps a hormone cue, where it possibly lays dormant and asymptomatic in its cicada host,” said co-author Matthew Kasson.As grotesque as an infected decaying cicada sounds, researchers say they’re generally harmless to humans. They also reproduce at such a rate that the fungi’s extermination of hordes of cicadas has little effect on their overall population.“They're very docile,” Lovett said. “You can walk right up to one, pick it up to see if it has the fungus (a white to yellowish plug on its back end) and set it back down. They’re not a major pest in any way. They’re just a really interesting quirky insect that’s developed a bizarre lifestyle." 3172

More than two dozen children in Virginia who had been reported missing are now recovered.The U.S. Marshals released a statement Monday morning stating their five-day effort called “Operation Find Our Children” resulted in the recovery of 27 children who had been previously missing in Virginia. They also located an additional six children who had been reported missing but were discovered with their legal guardians.More than 60 law enforcement officers from federal agencies, state and local regions participated in the effort. They were joined by 50 employees from social services, a team of medical professionals and representatives from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.Details about the children who were recovered, including when they were reported missing and where they were found, were not immediately available.This recovery effort is the latest from the U.S. Marshals. In September, a similar group of federal, state and local officers recovered 35 previously reported missing children in Ohio. And in Indiana, 8 kids were recovered in a similar missing kid law enforcement effort. 1123
