Friday is Juneteenth.The holiday commemorates the day in 1865 when slaves in Texas learned they were free, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.A total of 47 states and Washington D.C. celebrate Juneteenth as either a state holiday or observance.This week, the governors of New York and Virginia announced proposals to further recognize Juneteenth. But it's not a federal holiday.A Texas woman has been fighting to make that happen for years. And for civil rights activist Opal Lee, it's personal.On Juneteenth about 80 years ago, a mob of some 500 white supremacists tried to scare Lee’s family out of their home in Fort Worth, Texas.“My father came with a gun and the police told him if he busted a cap, they would let the mob have us,” said Lee. “The paper said the police said the crowd was so large, they couldn't control them, but they tore that house apart. They burned furniture.”Lee is now 93 years old, and she's dedicated her life to education and activism. In 2016, she he walked from Texas to D.C. to advocate for Juneteenth to become an official national holiday.Even a pandemic won't stop her. This year, Lee has plans for a socially distant celebration and a symbolic 2.5-mile walk.Lee says Juneteenth is about unity and recognizing freedom for all.“Slaves weren't free on the Fourth of July, so if it happened now, I would be ecstatic,” said Lee.If you'd like to join Lee's cause, you can add your name to her petition on Chang.org. Florida is just one step away from living up to its nickname as “The Sunshine State."Florida Governor Rick Scott signed HB 1013 on Friday. The bill would let Florida remain on Daylight Saving Time year round.The "Sunshine Protection Act," would make Florida exempt from the twice-yearly time change.While the rest of the Eastern United States would set their clocks back in the fall, Florida wouldn’t, leaving it with more sunshine in the evening during the winter. Northwest Florida is currently in the Central time zone.The bill still has to be approved by Congress. 596

For months now, public health experts and educators have been lamenting the long-term impacts of remote learning.In May, researchers estimated that by the beginning of this academic year, the average student would lose a third of their reading progress and half of their math progress from the previous year.“That was kind of assuming kind of a worst-case scenario,” said Beth Tarasawa, executive vice president of Research at NWEA, a nonprofit standardized testing company that released its findings from this fall’s assessment.“Kids remarkably have weathered pretty well in reading and those patterns both in the cross-sectional as well as the longitudinal studies really kind of highlight some good news,” said Tarasawa.But their analysis of data from nearly 4.4 million U.S. students in grades 3-8 found average scores for math were lower – between 5 and 10 percentile points– for students this year as compared to same-grade students last year.The findings represent some of the first empirical measures of how the pandemic has affected student performance.“We're moving slower, which means that we're covering less material over a certain period of time,” said fifth grade teacher Cara Koen.Koen, who has been teaching reading and math for more than two decades, says remote learning has forced her to slow her pace, especially with math.“There may be difficulties with Wi-Fi and different things from day to day” said Koen. “You have to slow down in order to reach all learners.”Kimberly Berens is a child development expert, educator and the author of "Blind Spots: Why Students Fail and The Science That Can Save Them."“Spending more time on repeated reinforced practice of skills to mastery so that when kids have gaps in instruction that are inevitably going to happen from school closures, kids getting sick or pandemics then kids will be more resilient,” said Berens.Still, NWEA’s data set is incomplete. One in four students who they tested in 2019 were missing from this year’s assessment.“They were much more likely to be African-American or LatinX or Hispanic,” said Tarasawa. "They were more likely to be from high poverty schools and they were more likely to be lower achieving in the first place.”That means that while the new data suggests some promising outcomes, we still don’t know just how severely the pandemic is impacting minority and socio-economically disadvantaged students. 2413

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way businesses approach hiring and are forcing them to recruit remotely. "Everything we’ve always done previously has been in person. It’s always been encouraged to do in-person, face-to-face communication. From a job seeker's perspective, obviously, it helps to be in-person and kind of take their facial cues and whatnot, so we really had to change everything we were doing," says Erik Cherkaski with the Fresno Regional Workforce Development Board. Cherkaski says one of his main jobs is to recruit employees for local businesses. Because of the pandemic, their recruiting services are now virtual. Recently, the organization has been holding virtual job fairs for a number of large employers."I think one day we had logistics, so we had some of our local fulfillment centers on. Another day we had the service industry on, so some of the local retailers that were doing mass hiring [participated]. Then, we had a focus on government, as well. So, some of the local and state organizations that were doing some hiring and we had some very good turnout. This was new territory for us," said Cherkaski.Employers held virtual presentations for candidates who tuned in using online meeting platforms like Zoom and Webex. "It was very engaging. We got good feedback from our employers and we are looking to do it again. So that was very positive for us to see that we can do something like this online," said Cherkaski.College students and recent graduates are also finding their first career move by participating in online events. Handshake, which helps connect more than 500,000 employers with college students looking for a job or internship, says it's expanding it's virtual services to accommodate universities who've put their in-person career fairs on hold."There are a lot of opportunities that do still exist even with the change in the economy this particular year. We have so many students across so many different walks of life that are looking in for those opportunities to be able to just jump start their career," said Christine Cruzvergara, with Handshake. To help, Handshake created a new virtual engagement module."That is going to allow employers to be able to actually segment, campaign and reach out to candidates that meet the different criteria and qualifications that they are looking for, across all of our thousands of universities and colleges. They can go beyond the basic qualifications in a virtual fair to be even more tailored around, for example, some of their DEI requirements or their goals," said Cruzvergara.Handshake hopes the new tools not only help employers narrow down the types of students they want to hire, but also helps students. "It's going to allow students to maximize the time they do have in between classes or in-between their part time jobs or things they might be doing other responsibilities or obligations they have," said Cruzvergara.As for how long Fresno Regional Workforce Development Board will be holding their recruiting events virtually, Cherkaski said, "if you were to have asked me this four months ago I would have said, Oh this isn’t going to go on too long but now we're four months in and I suspect were going to be doing this for the foreseeable future."Both Fresno Regional Workforce Development Board and Handshake believe even when COVID-19 restrictions are lifted completely, employers will still want to use virtual recruiting events to widen their candidate search.Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified Christine Cruzvergara's last name. 3693
FORTVILLE, Ind. — A central Indiana superintendent gave students some fun "assignments" to complete on the first snow day of the year. With the institution of virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, many families thought snow days to be a thing of the past for students. But when snowfall led to messy roads across parts of Indiana, there were still several dozen schools that chose to either delay or cancel classes.Dr. Jack Parker, Superintendent at Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation sent a letter to parents canceling in-person learning in favor of virtual learning — but not the type of virtual learning typically seen amid the pandemic.The note to parents went on to give two assignments that included playing in the snow and throwing snowballs."Students will use the scientific process in planning appropriate clothing to remain warm and dry while spending time outside. Once the hypothesis has been identified, and appropriate attire has been secured, students will be expected to test their theory by going outdoors and playing in the snow," Parker's note read. "Step two of this assignment will be to practice the skills of estimation and measurement when throwing snowballs at one another while maintaining a minimum of 6' of distance with others outside of your household. When being with said snowball, students are expected to practice their social skills and to use their good words."He even gave students a chance to earn some extra credit. "Extra credit can be earned by helping to shovel sidewalks and/or driveways," Parker wrote.And of course, students who aren't feeling well were given an alternate assignment to complete."Students who are not feeling well will be expected to complete the alternative assignment of resting indoors and drinking plenty of fluids," the letter read. 1822
