SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two women are launching a new nonprofit, Black San Diego, to bolster Black-owned businesses locally.It started at a kitchen table over chips and salsa four years ago. Sheri Jones, a real estate broker, and physical education teacher Tinicia Smith wanted to create a hub for Black-owned businesses in San Diego.They created a Facebook group called Black San Diego and now they're more than 34,000 members strong."For the last four years we've been able to collect data and what we realize is that business owners haven't been able to sustain because they don't have the tools," Jones said.She first noticed the issue when she was running her real estate business and went to a conference. She said she was the one Black person there and it was uncomfortable."I knew when I was having trouble, others must be too," Jones said.This week, Black San Diego became official, registered through the government and they're excited to plan workshops to offer those tools to the community. Jones described the workshop as, "an 8-week course where they can go through and get business basics, book keeping, business taxes, really how to formulate their corporation."Newly Appointed Board Member and CEO of Growth 1031 Lance Growth said these workshops are crucial for black-owned businesses like his."I stumbled into my position.. I made so many mistakes and I just had to sit down and learn from those mistakes," he said. "I'm going to send my operations lady, and ask her to take some extra notes on accounting, on marketing, on filing correctly, but it's a really beneficial tool."The workshop costs 0 per business and the nonprofit is launching a donation campaign to sponsor local Black-owned businesses."If the dollar circulates in the Black community then we can unite and produce generational wealth and that's what we're here to do," Smith said.They hope to bring members of their community out and help them elevate their business, "they don't want to step in the front, not get criticized, not get caught up in the chaos. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --A deported Army veteran who was pardoned by Governor Jerry Brown last year will now be allowed to become a U.S. citizen.Hector Barajas was honorably discharged but then deported to Mexico in 2004 after serving prison time for a shooting.  He had been waiting for news about his application for citizenship and learned Thursday that it had been approved. His swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for April 13 in San Diego. Barajas founded the Deported Veterans Support house in Tijuana and has become an advocate for the roughly 350 other men and women in the same situation. "We don't condone criminal activity, I'm not proud of what happened but I am proud of my service, and I take responsibility for what happened. I went to prison, paid my debt to society and I don't think we should be deported, " Barajas told 10News via Skype Friday morning. Although he's looking forward to starting a new chapter, he says he is very much committed to carrying on the mission he started to help bring other deported vets home.  1072

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across California, a record-breaking 3.7 million acres have already burned in more than 8-thousand wildfires this year.Both Cal Fire San Diego and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department are preparing to respond to potential fire disasters, as dangerous weather conditions return to San Diego County.“We know the potential is there,” said Thomas Shoots, a public information officer for Cal Fire. “We’re holding all our firefighters on duty, and we’re staffing on every piece of equipment to make sure we’re covered, we’ve brought on contract dozers. We’ve asked that the other agencies that we work with here in the county provide resources, and they stepped up, and we’re very appreciative of that.”San Diego Fire-Rescue has also increased staffing and equipment.The National Weather Service extended a Red Flag Warning to Tuesday at 5 p.m. for the inland valleys and mountains.A heat advisory will also be in effect Tuesday through Thursday.Just weeks ago, the Valley Fire destroyed homes and charred more than 16 thousand acres in the East County.With similar weather conditions, fire crews hope community members will try to reduce the possibility of a fire sparking.“If everybody could do their part, anything they can think of that can start a fire, whether its dragging chains down the highway, clearing brush with metal motors, please be extra cautious,” said Shoots.SDG&E warned 700 customers in the backcountry of the possibility of Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) but sent the all-clear to most customers by Monday afternoon.However, 19 customers in Descanso may still be impacted by PSPS overnight into Tuesday. 1651

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Tuesday morning a human chain formed outside of Rady Children’s Hospital to mark the start of Child Abuse Prevention Month.Hand in hand, dressed in blue, child health and welfare experts, law enforcement agencies, community members and leaders banded together to show support.“This is a circle of support for children,” said Dr. Suzanne Starling, medical director of the Chadwick Center. “We are holding hands to show we are encircling children with all the hope and all the services we can provide for them.”The human chain formed around the Hospital’s iconic Inspiration Fountain.“Child abuse is a very large problem, thousands and thousands of children in the United States are abused every day,” said Starling.She said abused children not only suffer physically, but mentally and emotionally as well.Starling said she hopes San Diegans can stand up for children and keep child abuse prevention in mind, even after April.If you suspect a child is being abused, you can report it by calling this 24-hour hotline 1-800-344–6000 or click here for more resources. 1089

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across California, many businesses continue to struggle in San Diego County, and some business owners say they can’t afford to pay their rent anymore without their usual income during this pandemic.Landlords are also feeling the effects of the small business struggle.“Many tenants are paying their rents, there aren’t many tenants paying their rents from profits,” said Sandy Sigal, CEO of NewMark Merrill Companies. “We’re not going to make any money or have any profits this year at all, we know that, but we do need enough money to pay our mortgages and lenders.NewMark Merrill Companies own about 80 shopping centers in three states, including California. We’re doing what we can.”But Sigal said landlords could only do so much, and it’s up to the government to step in and help save these businesses.“If there was a fire or earthquake or flood, they would have insurance for all this,” he said. “We need to extend what was PPP or The RESTART Act. I’m in favor of some stimulus to the unemployed.”Without additional assistance now, it’s a struggle he expects to continue until significant changes are made, and businesses can fully bounce back.“If the government helps my tenants, I’d be helped enough,” he said. “This is no one’s fault, but the pandemic and we all got to get through this together.” 2393
