The National Domestic Violence Hotline is being flooded with a record number of people asking for help. The hotline, which operates 24 hours a day, took in more than 570,000 calls, texts and online chats last year, a jump of more than 30 percent from the year prior. The increase has put a strain on the organization.“When we see spikes like we did last year, we're just not prepared to respond to that kind of growth,” says National Domestic Violence Hotline CEO Katie Ray-Jones. Ray-Jones believes there are a couple reasons for the spike, including the #MeToo Movement, as well as high-profile domestic violence cases like the one involving R&B singer R. Kelly and former White House aide Rob Porter. “We know that people see threads of themselves in that story and it prompts them to either one, recognize ‘I don't want my current situation to turn out like that, so let me reach out for help’ or they're recognizing ‘Gosh, this is really serious and I need to connect to someone right now for help.’” Ray-Jones says the hotline is on track to set another record. So far this year, more people are reaching out for help than last year at this time. The hotline is federally funded, which is why Ray-Jones came to Washington, D.C. to talk with members of Congress.“We did a congressional briefing to highlight the increase in volume that we've received, as well as we received our 5 millionth contact several weeks ago,” she says. “And we wanted to illustrate and commemorate that bittersweet moment for the organization and recognize there's 5 million. Researchers are trying to find out as much as they can about great white sharks.After a couple of attacks involving people last year, there are new efforts to learn more about these animals. It’s moments like the incident at Nauset Beach South that shark experts are studying more closely. Video taken of the beach shows white sharks feeding on seals close to the shore. Now, researchers are launching new studies, including one looking at the feeding habits and behaviors of these sharks. “We're essentially going to be giving iPhones to white sharks to track their activity in three dimensions at a really fine scale,” explains Megan Winton, a research scientist with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. Winton and other researchers will be tagging sharks with devices similar to what's in smartphones. “We'll be able to identify how often they're feeding on seals. We'll be able to look for relationships with feeding activity and environmental conditions,” Winton says. The data would be given to officials to use to provide better warnings on beaches. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy is currently pouring over data on a population study they just finished. “Based on the video footage, we were able to identify every shark we saw to an individual level,” Winton says. So far, the researchers have identified more than 300 white sharks. Winton calls it a conservation success story, thanks to protections put in place over the last few decades. “So one thing I like to remind people is that these are large, amazing animals and they're very capable predators and they're certainly deserving of our respect,” Winton says. “But they're not monsters out there, lurking our coastline menacing our beaches. They're big fish out there eating their natural prey item.” White sharks are the only natural predator to seals in the Cape Cod area, which some residents and fisherman see as a nuisance.Researchers want to see how many seals the sharks are eating and if they can impact the seal population. 2023

  

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Cali. – It’s harvest time on California’s Central Coast and winemaker Jean-Pierre Wolff has seen a big drop in production since last year. “This year, the harvest is below average,” he said. “Some of my older vines did suffer from salt toxicity and have been steadily declining.” Wolff owns and operates the award-winning Wolff Vineyards. He says climate change is affecting his grapes and that he has the records to prove it. “Absolutely, I have my lab book where I describe extensively the harvest and the sugar levels of the grapes,” he said. “So, definitely I see these changes.” Wolff says the changes are linked to extreme weather like longer droughts, hotter summers and milder winters. “I’ve been farming here for 20 years,” he said. “Years ago, I didn’t have to worry about sunburns on my grapes, now I do.” Less rain means more reliance on irrigation, which Wolff says is cutting into his and other wineries’ bottom lines. “If you take the Central Coast, which is defined from the Bay Area to Ventura County, 86% of the water use is from ground water extraction,” he said. “So clearly, that’s not sustainable if we have to offset.” At nearby California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo, they have a growing viticulture program. Cal Poly professor Federico Casassa, Ph.D. says climate change is altering wine agriculture across the world. “Heatwaves are extremely pervasive not just in California but in Australia, in South America, and increasingly in Europe as well,” he said. Despite the impact, Casassa says climate change doesn’t mean doomsday for the wine industry. “My point is global warming and climate change are a reality,” he said. “But the effect that we see on grapes is not only due to global warming, it’s due to the fact that we grow better grapes." Now, Casassa is teaching better and more sustainable practices to viticulture students saying sustainability is not a destination but rather a journey. "Climate change is here and global warming is part of climate change,” he said. “But we are going to adapt.” Adapting, just like Wolff is doing. “I’m sort of here trying to beat the clock so to speak,” he said. To help protect his harvest, Wolff is now replanting a big portion of his vineyard and watering them with a new type of subsurface irrigation. “Instead of irrigating above ground through this drip line I connect with a little spaghetti hose and this pipe goes 3 feet below ground to the root zone,” he said. And while he might not be able to change the climate, Wolff does plan on changing his practices. 2608
