WASATCH COUNTY, Utah -- A Midway woman is thanking her local search and rescuers after they dedicated their own time to find a family heirloom at the bottom of Deer Creek Reservoir.“Here it is!” Lindsay Bowen said as she held up her left hand. “To have it on my finger again felt so good.”Staring at her wedding ring, Bowen is still in disbelief.“I was so shocked, I kind of had just counted it as a loss and, if anything, we were just grabbing at straws trying to find it,” Bowen continued.Rewind two weeks, Bowen and her family were playing on a floating obstacle course at Deer Creek Reservoir.“We were just out there playing and it slipped right off,” Bowen said. “I knew it just dropped, and it was probably 15 to 20 feet deep.”Losing her ring had turned into a real-life treasure hunt.“Someone’s going to find it and take it,” she said.But to Bowen, the ring wasn’t just rich in value, it was rich in sentiment.“I’ve had my ring for 18 years,” said Bowen. “It’s my grandmother’s diamond and my husband designed it, I realized it held all of my babies and I was just so sad it was gone, I didn’t realize how much I loved it.”After her husband made multiple failed attempts to retrieve the heirloom, Bowen turned to a Facebook community group.“If anyone has the equipment, if anyone can go down, I’ll pay you a hundred dollars.”Then, unlikely heroes with Wasatch County Search and Rescue’s dive team saw her post and answered her call for help.“They went out for two hours and dove on their own time. They’re volunteers, and they just dove and dove and they couldn’t find it,” Bowen explained.Still, they didn’t give up hope. Eight days, two dives, an underwater metal detector, and a half dozen search and rescue volunteers later, they found it.“Are you serious!?” Bowen's husband can be heard yelling in a cell phone video of the recovery.“Yeah, we got it!” a rescuer shouted back.The long lost ring was found using a golf ball and a metal detector. The divers dropped the ball in the general area where it was lost, then used the metal detector to find it.“I started crying,” Bowen said. “[The diver] came up and it was on his pinky finger and he was so excited!”Bowen said the divers would not accept her reward. Still, she believes everyone came away with something valuable that day.“They were just happy to help and I was just so happy to be in a community that takes care of each other like that,” Bowen said. “That memory for me, of people doing good and being recognized for good, I think that’s my favorite part.”Bowen said the divers continued to use the metal detector in the water, retrieving a number of Apple Watches and iPhones, which they were able to return to their rightful owners.This story was originally reported by Elle Thomas at KSTU. 2772

(KGTV) -- An Escondido woman accused in a vehicle crash that killed four people, including two children, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to all charges levied against her.Ashley Rene Williams pleaded not guilty to four counts of murder and four counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated during her initial court appearance, which was via video conference.The 28-year-old’s bail was set at million.According to Escondido police, just before 8:30 p.m. on May 5, Williams was driving northbound near Oak Hill Drive and San Pasqual Valley Road when she struck two adults and two children walking in the area.Abel Valdez, 33, and 11-year-old Emmanuel Riva died at the scene. Ten-year-old Yovanny Felix and 50-year-old Carmela Camacho were rushed to the hospital, where they later passed away.The boys were brothers, and Camacho was their grandmother. Valdez was Camacho’s boyfriend, according to a GoFundMe established for the family.Williams was taken to the hospital after also suffering injuries.Following an investigation that involved the analysis of evidence that included cellphone and vehicle computer data, lab test results, and roadway measurements, Williams was arrested at her home on June 4.Prosecutors said Williams was under the influence of drugs and using her cellphone at the time of the collision.10News learned Williams’ driver’s license was already suspended as of Feb. 18, 2020, due to a drug-related offense. DMV records showed she was also involved in a non-alcohol related crash on Dec. 16, 2019.San Diego County Deputy District Attorney Laurie Hauf said, “We believe she is a danger to the community, to the safety of the public, having been advised the last time that driving while intoxicated could kill somebody and she did it anyway.”A readiness hearing for Williams is set for July 7, with a preliminary hearing scheduled in the case for Aug. 20. 1909

WASHINGTON (AP) — More police officers have died in the line of duty this year in the United States than in 2017, according to data released Thursday. Most were killed by gunfire, and vehicular accidents claimed nearly as many officers' lives.The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund said in a report that 144 federal, state and local officers have died so far in 2018. That figure represents roughly a 12 percent increase from the 129 who died in 2017.The majority of the officers who died were either shot — 52 this year, up from 46 in 2017 — or fatally injured in car or motorcycle crashes, which accounted for 50 deaths. Other fatalities involved heart attacks, strokes, drownings and cancer and other illnesses among those who responded to the 9/11 World Trade Center attack.Of the officers who were shot, eight were killed during investigative activity and six were killed while responding to calls of a domestic or public disturbance, according to the report. Two were shot while serving warrants, two died while handling or transporting prisoners and two others were inadvertently shot by other officers.Craig Floyd, the fund's chief executive officer, called the increase in deaths disappointing after a decline in 2017."Sadly this reminds us that public safety is a dangerous job and can come at a very steep price," Floyd said in a statement. "We must never take the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers for granted, and we must remember the families of the fallen who are left behind."Of the officers who died in traffic-related incidents, 32 were killed in crashes involving another vehicle and 14 were struck while outside their vehicle. VISTA, Calif., (KGTV) — The man accused of killing his girlfriend in Cardiff pleaded not guilty Wednesday at his arraignment.Henry Cowen, 41, stood stoically inside the defendant's box, watching Deputy District Attorney Marnie Layon accuse him of murdering 43-year-old Sabrina Lukosky. Friends at the courthouse said Lukosky was a beloved butterfly breeder, who was "so lovely."The investigation began when Lukosky's mother requested a welfare check in early October, after not hearing from her daughter for several days. Officers came to the gray flat the couple shared on Cowen's mother's property in Cardiff. They saw Lukosky's car but noticed a foul smell coming from the residence. A few days later, they executed a search warrant and found Lukosky's dead body and signs of a violent struggle inside the bedroom. "There was a broken stick, a bottle that had been broken, some amount of blood, and the victim had a 1.5-inch vertical gash to her forehead," Layon said. But that was not what killed her. The Medical Examiner said Lukosky died of strangulation and blunt force trauma. Prosecutors believe Cowen then left North County, first to got to Los Angeles. Then they said he took a Lyft to Riverside County, where he met with his children's mother. Investigators believe it was then that Cowen took steps to escape the country."That woman and her father, at his request, took him to the Israeli Consulate there, so that he could make arrangements to obtain a visa to get out of the country to move to Israel," Layon said. "They learned when they were going through the process, that would take six to eight months, and an expression was then made that the preference would be to go to New York."But before he could leave, officers with the Fugitive Task Force arrested Cowen in Riverside County on Oct. 11. He remains in custody with no bail.Cowen has an extensive violent criminal record, including assaulting an ex-girlfriend in California and kidnapping and torturing a man in Washington State. Because of that, if convicted, Cowen faces a maximum sentence of 55 years to life in prison. 2106
