SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Inside the 3D Innovations Lab at Rady Children's Hospital, the hearts, bones, skulls, and spines of patients are brought to life in a new way.Justin Ryan, Ph.D. is director of the lab. Using 3D printers, they can replicate a patient's anatomy down to every precise detail, giving doctors critical information before surgery.“The concept is by giving our doctors more information they can perform a better procedure; they can even perform it with less time. So that means less time under bypass, less time under anesthesia, which is great for the patients themselves," said Ryan.For example, if a patient is a candidate for a stent or valve, doctors could use the 3D model to try different sizes before entering the operating room. “We give them more information to plan a better procedure," said Ryan. While some of the models take several hours, many can be created within the day. “There isn’t an average day, I might have a cardiac case in the morning, an ortho case in the evening, I'll have a doctor have an idea for a medical device that they wanted to design or develop, and that all happens here," said Ryan. Ryan says the 3D models are also useful when explaining the procedure to families. The technology is currently being funded by grants and donations, at no extra cost to families. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Local community activists put together a report that shows what they’re calling the roadmap to racial inequality, basing it on housing data from the 1930s.On Thursday morning, members of the community used red paint to outline zoning lines of the streets of Kensington. The lines were a physical representation of what happened after the Great Depression under the order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.Ricardo Flores, executive director of Local Initiatives Support Corporation, said, “The very benign use of zoning actually created segregation this day. It says if you can buy 7,000 square feet of land then you can live in this neighborhood.”Flores’ group and other organizations took to the streets to promote the data.“Today, in this day and age, you can ask a high school kid, ‘Where do black and brown people live?’ You ask any adult, ‘Where do black and brown people live? How do they know that? How is it so embedded in us?” said Flores.The activists hope to get support from San Diego officials and a promise in changing the way housing decisions are made.Flores said, “They should look at that parcel of land and allow them to be subdivided, sold, or build on it and rent it out.” 1221

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Lime can still operate its dockless scooters and bikes in San Diego, after the city's petition to revoke the company's permit was denied.Tuesday, a hearing officer reportedly refused the city's petition to revoke Lime's Shared Mobility Device (SMD) permit. The city argued that Lime violated municipal code on several occasions.“Lime is pleased with today’s decision and we appreciate the hearing officer for recognizing our compliance in San Diego. As San Diego’s longest serving operator, we value our partnership with the City and look forward to continuing to serve the community," Lime said in a statement.RELATED: City Council committee OKs changes to dockless scooter, bike lawIn August, Lime was made aware of the city's intent to revoke their SMD permit after they said the company failed to address speeding violations within the city's geofenced areas. A letter to Lime from the city's Development Services Department claimed the company had violated San Diego Municipal Code on July 13, July 14, and Aug 1.Dockless scooters and bikes are required to have a 8 mph speed restriction in high-traffic areas areas like Spanish landing and near Petco park, and as low as 3 mph along the Embarcadero and the Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade."The Mayor has made it abundantly clear that operators who don’t follow rules meant to protect public safety could lose their permit and no longer do business in San Diego anymore. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In a follow-up to a Team10 story from last week about sexual harassment allegations at a local nonprofit, the man who is accused is coming forward to try to clear his name. Last week Team10 aired an emotional interview with San Diegan Angelique Williams, who claimed that Gregory Hamilton, a former teacher who works as a local pastor, repeatedly harassed her with unwanted sexual advances. Hamilton is now firing back. "Read my lips. There has never been sexual harassment with Angelique Williams on any day on the face of this earth," he tells us. After cancelling on us multiple times before our original story aired, this week he finally agreed to do an on-camera interview to share his side of the story. Williams was an adult student at San Diego's Second Chance nonprofit training program, where Hamilton was her job training instructor. He also works as a pastor at Uptown Church of Christ. The church's website reads it first congregated under his leadership in 2009. When we asked the nonprofit about the sexual harassment allegations, they sent back a statement that read in part, "We agree that what happened to Ms. Williams should not happen to anyone." It also read, "He was later terminated." In the new interview, Hamilton tells us he never received anything from the nonprofit saying he was charged with sexual harassment. He says that before his termination, he had been threatening legal action against the nonprofit. "[It was] about the disparity of the treatment of African American people that come [to the nonprofit] compared to Latino people for assistance," he says. Hamilton showed us a letter that he says he got from the nonprofit. It explains how he was terminated for not meeting the requirements of a performance improvement plan. There is no mention of harassment. In our initial story, he sent us a copy of another letter that he says he got from the nonprofit. It was a confidential separation agreement with a severance payment of ,760.00. There was also no mention of harassment. When we had asked Second Chance about the separation agreement and severance, they declined to comment, citing privacy issues. Williams firmly believes Hamilton sexually harassed her. She says he'd inappropriately touch her, repeatedly call her, and send suggestive text messages. Hamilton maintains it was Williams who advanced on him. Not the other way. He says his only intention was a friendship. He would not show us most of the text exchanges between the two of them, adding he would save those to show in court. We asked Second Chance for an explanation as to why harassment was not included as a basis for the termination in the letter he showed us. As of air time this Wednesday, Second Chance wrote it was unavailable for comment.Below is one of the statements Second Chance issued to us before the original story aired. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In the late '80s Gary Cheatham founded Auntie Helen's in a one-car garage in North Park in 1988.Gary did fluff-and-fold laundry first for one, then for a handful of friends who were sick with AIDS."Everybody could do it. But nobody would do it. And I think that makes him a superhero in my eyes," says Auntie Helen's current Executive Director, Rod Legg.Fear and stigma at the time hurt the LGBT community as much as the disease, but word spread quickly about Gary's services, and Auntie Helen's grew. Sadly, so did the disease.HIV and AIDS claimed more than 100,000 lives in the U.S. in the 1980s. Many of Gary's clients and friends who died willed their estates to Auntie Helen's.Their belongings accumulated in Gary's garage, which was also where he did laundry. Eventually, with help from a few high-powered friends and other activists, Gary opened Auntie Helen's thrift store in 1989.The laundry service and the thrift store are still located in North Park."We also do COVID-19 [laundry], which is our frontline medical workers. That's a tie in to the past, we had to do that. We had to offer that," Legg says.They're expanding the store, and their outreach, giving out free groceries to their regular clients (about 25-35 individuals) and now also to frontline workers.With COVID-19 leaving so many more people on hard times, they started delivering groceries — no questions asked, no referral needed. At one point, to more than 300 people.Legg explains, "this is everybody's HIV in a sense... We don't know where we're at. We're all wondering what's going to happen the next day, but most importantly is neighbor to neighbor we need to make sure we're taking care of each other."All in keeping with the legacy of Gary Cheatham, about whom, Legg says, "this man was way before his time... Can you imagine the faces of the people that got the hugs, and the clothes? We should all be our heroes, for each other." 1943
