Dr. Anthony Fauci again broke with President Donald Trump on several key aspects to the administration's response to the coronavirus pandemic during a conversation at Georgetown University on Tuesday.Notably, Fauci said that while schools' goal should be to reopen in the fall, the decision should be left up to local districts in areas where the virus is surging."We should try as best as possible to keep kids in school," Fauci said. "...however, that's going to vary depending on where you are in the country."Fauci said in areas where the virus isn't prevalent; schools should feel comfortable reopening to students. But in areas where cases are spiking — Fauci identified Arizona, California, Florida and Texas as states where the pandemic is the worst — the decision should be left to local officials. He added that districts should "make a decision based on the judgment that the safety of the children and safety of the teachers is paramount."President Donald Trump has called for all schools to reopen in the fall, and threaten to withhold federal funding in districts that choose not to open to students. In addition, Fauci also broke with Trump on testing. While Trump has said as recently as Saturday that spiking case numbers in America are the result of a high volume of tests, Fauci pointed out that other troubling specifics are on the rise."There's no doubt it's both (the number of tests and the uncontrollable spread of the virus that are causing case numbers to rise)," Fauci said.He added that the percentage of positive tests to the total number of tests taken is on the rise in many parts of the country. He also pointed out the hospitalizations are also up throughout the country and added that deaths may rise in the coming days. However, Fauci added that he does not believe the average amount of deaths will rise to the level of where they were in the spring, adding that the average age of a COVID-19 patient is skewing younger than it was earlier in the pandemic. Finally, Fauci was asked who Americans should trust during the pandemic."Trust respected medical authorities...who have a track record of telling the truth," Fauci said. He included himself among the group of "respected medical authorities."The discussion was hosted both by Georgetown's Institute of Politics and Public Service and the Global Health Initiative.Fauci's comments come as the White House continues to sideline him from official briefings with the Coronavirus Task Force, of which he is a member. It also comes days after reports emerged that White House officials were "concerned" about Fauci's recommendations during the pandemic, including advice from earlier this year in which he urged Americans not to wear masks.Initially, Fauci did recommend that Americans avoid wearing masks in an effort to keep from emptying an already-depleted stockpile of personal protective equipment. He has since made an about-face and has urged all Americans to wear masks. He's also admitted that the mixed messaging has been detrimental in slowing the spread of the virus."We have to admit it, that that mixed message in the beginning, even though it was well-meant to allow masks to be available for health workers, that was detrimental in getting the message across," Fauci told NPR earlier this month. "No doubt about it."Meanwhile, other White House officials — like Surgeon General Jerome Adams — also initially recommended against the use of masks. President Donald Trump has also spread disinformation about the virus, and retweeted claims that "everyone is lying" about the disease — including the CDC.On Monday, Trump claimed that despite Fauci's lack of public appearances, the two still have a "good" relationship. 3723

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — President Donald Trump says the United Arab Emirates and Israel will establish diplomatic ties in a deal that would halt the planned annexation of occupied land sought by the Palestinians for their future state. The announcement by Trump came in a tweet on Thursday, which states leaders from the three countries "spoke today and agreed to the full normalization of relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates."This agreement means the UAE, which is home to the cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, would become the first Gulf Arab state to have ties to Israel. The statement says future diplomatic partnerships are possible, saying Israel will "focus its efforts now on expanding ties with other countries in the Arab and Muslim world."Among Arab nations, only Egypt and Jordan have active diplomatic ties with Israel. Egypt made a peace deal with Israel in 1979, followed by Jordan in 1994. 939

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government's top infectious disease expert, said during a Senate hearing Tuesday that he was "very disturbed" by the recent spike in COVID-19 cases and said it's conceivable that the U.S. could see as many as 100,000 new infections a day should trends continue."We are now having 40,000+ new cases a day," Fauci said. "I would not be surprised if we go up to 100,000 a day if this does not turn around."Also during the hearing, Fauci said he's "concerned" about how some states have gone about reopening their economies and said he's observed some states "skipping steps" on federal government guidelines."I am also quite concerned about what we are seeing evolve right now in several states, Fauci said. "When states start to try and open again, they need to follow the guidelines that have been very carefully laid out with regard to checkpoints.""What we've seen in several states is several iterations of that. Perhaps, in some, going too quickly and skipping over some of the checkpoints," Fauci said.Fauci did not say which states he believed skipped checkpoints but singled out Arizona, California, Florida and Texas as containing more than 50 percent of new infections. The White House and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have recommended that states follow a three-phase reopening plan and meet several criteria before proceeding to each phase. Those criteria include a downward trajectory of documented cases within a 14-day period and a downward trajectory of positive tests as a percent of total tests within a 14-day period.Fauci's comments came during a Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP).Among the other health experts who attended the hearing were CDC Director Robert Redfield, FDA Director Stephen Hahn and Assistant Secretary for Health Adm. Brett Giroir. The hearing comes as several states struggle to contain the virus as they start to reopen amid a nationwide jump in case counts. The U.S. reported upwards of 40,000 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, Saturday and Sunday — some of the biggest daily spikes since the pandemic began. The increase is evident in more than half of the states in the nation. Florida, Texas and Arizona are getting hit especially hard.In the Sunshine State, beaches have closed for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday. For its part, Texas has begun scaling back the reopening of its economy. 2404

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV)- An El Cajon family says the least valuable items stolen during a recent burglary are the ones they most desperate to get back.  Last Friday, Shannon Torres returned to her home along Murray Drive around noon with her 3-year-old son. "Her heart dropped. She was terrified," said husband Omar Torres.Torres says she found the front unlocked and the French doors leading into the family room open."They had kicked it open and splintered it up near the top," he said.Inside the house, the bedroom drawers were open and Shannon's jewelry boxes were gone and along with them, dozens of pieces of jewelry.Among the missing items: a pearl necklace from her aunt that Shannon wore at her wedding, diamond earrings from her husband for their anniversary, and a silver-and-gold bird necklace. The latter was a Mother's Day present. The couple have three sons, ages eight, six and three."It's very sad. Heartbreaking," said Torres. That feeling was made more intense when they realized what else was in the jewelry boxes: a yellow-and-white flash drive on a key ring and a black SanDisk memory stick. On them were the birth videos of their sons, along with videos and stills of each of their first year of life."It was a tremendous time we want to be able to relive and now we can't on those videos. It's devastating. You want to be able to share with them and pass it on to them one day," he said. The bird necklace is engraved with the first letters of her sons' names, V - A - N. If you have any information on the case, you're urged to call Crimestoppers at 888-580-8477. 1604

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- A rally was held Monday afternoon in El Cajon to not only celebrate the holiday season, but to also call on local leaders to fully reopen businesses and schools. The “All I Want for Christmas is Freedom” rally took place at the El Cajon Centennial Plaza, located on 200 Civic Center Way.The event was organized by the group Re-Open San Diego and was a “free and safe family event to save the spirit of Christmas, enjoy food, shopping, listening to the Mayor of El Cajon [Bill Wells] play live music, and to advocate for fully reopening San Diego businesses and schools.”State Sen. Brian Jones, Rep. Darrell Issa, and Peggy Hall with TheHealthyAmerican.org will be among those speaking at the rally. Many say they believed businesses can reopen safely."Let these people get back to work and be safe, take care of their employees, take care of their customers and open up in a safe manner," Jones said. Monday’s rally comes nearly a week after a San Diego judge ruled two local strip clubs and all county restaurants could remain open despite California’s stay-at-home order for the Southern California region. The judge’s ruling, however, was blocked two days later by an appellate court until the ruling can be heard in court -- forcing restaurants to once again focus on take-out service. 1323
