COPENHAGEN, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed E.coli cases has risen to 11 with at least another eight persons suspected of having the intestinal infection in Denmark, according to Denmark's National Serum Institute on Sunday.Five of the confirmed cases show symptoms of kidney failure which marks an advanced stage of the sickness, the institute said.Danish cucumbers are suspected of helping spread the E. coli bacteria believed to be causing a deadly outbreak of intestinal infection in Denmark and Germany, local media reported Sunday.The Danish cucumbers were mixed in Germany with cucumbers originating in the Netherlands, making it difficult to determine if Danish cucumbers are in fact contaminated.Denmark's Veterinary and Food Administration (DVFA) had earlier said the suspicion against Danish cucumber was "vague", but advised Danish consumers not to eat raw tomatoes, lettuces and cucumbers from Germany, and cucumber from Spain.It is now checking Danish cucumbers for traces of E. coli with results expected on Tuesday.Some Danish retailers have now removed these products from their supermarket shelves. And the Danish branch of fast-food chain McDonald's announced Saturday that it was dropping fresh cucumbers from its menu until further notice.The infection, which is food-borne, can be caused by eating raw or uncooked foods such as vegetables contaminated with the E. coli bacteria.Symptoms of infection include mild fever, bloody diarrhea and vomiting, and can last five to seven days. BEIJING, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- No newly-formed oil belt was detected in the past two days in north China's Bohai Bay from ConocoPhillips' platforms in the Penglai 19-3 oilfield, the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) said.However, new spots of visible oil spills could still be found around platform C, the SOA said in a statement on Sunday.It is estimated that about 4.51 liters of oil leaked into the sea on Saturday, a slight drop from 6.56 liters from Thursday.No oil clean-up work was done on Friday and Saturday due to the strong winds and rough conditions at sea, the statement said.ConocoPhillips China, a subsidiary of U.S. energy giant ConocoPhillips, first reported spills to authorities in June. The oil spills have polluted more than 5,500 square km of sea water in the Bohai Bay since June.The oil spills have spread to beaches in Hebei and Liaoning provinces. The spills have been blamed for losses in the provinces' tourism and aquatic farming industries.The company on Aug. 31 submitted a report to the SOA claiming that it had screened out all potential sources for oil spills and blocked all oil leaks.After days of evaluation, however, the SOA said on Sept. 2 that ConocoPhillips had failed to complete the clean-up.

WASHINGTON, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine have found that grape seed polyphenols -- a natural antioxidant -- may help prevent the development or delay the progression of Alzheimer's disease.The research, led by Giulio Pasinetti, was published online Friday in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, which causes brain changes that gradually get worse.This is the first study to evaluate the ability of grape- derived polyphenols to prevent the generation of a specific form of amyloid (A) peptide, a substance in the brain long known to cause the neurotoxicity associated with Alzheimer's disease.In partnership with a team at the University of Minnesota, Pasinetti and collaborators administered grape seed polyphenolic extracts to mice genetically determined to develop memory deficits and A neurotoxins similar to those found in Alzheimer's disease. They found that the brain content of the A*56, a specific form of A previously implicated in the promotion of Alzheimer's disease memory loss, was substantially reduced after treatment.Previous studies suggest that increased consumption of grape- derived polyphenols, whose content, for example, is very high in red wine, may protect against cognitive decline in Alzheimer's. This new finding corroborates those theories."Since naturally occurring polyphenols are also generally commercially available as nutritional supplements and have negligible adverse events even after prolonged periods of treatment, this new finding holds significant promise as a preventive method or treatment, and is being tested in translational studies in Alzheimer's disease patients," said Pasinetti.In Alzheimer's disease, brain cells degenerate and die, causing a steady decline in memory and mental function.
BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhuanet)-- A new study shows that a diet rich in cholesterol-friendly foods, such as soy products and tree nuts, can decrease LDL (bad) cholesterol significantly, according to media reports on Tuesday.The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that people who ate a healthy diet filled with cholesterol-lowering foods experienced a 13 percent decrease in their LDL cholesterol levels.For patients with high levels of so-called bad cholesterol, doctors usually have two prescriptions: cholesterol-lowering statin drugs and a diet that cuts out foods high in saturated fat, such as ice cream, red meat and butter.But the new study found that when it comes to lowering artery-clogging cholesterol, what you eat may be more important than what you don't eat.David Jenkins of St. Michael's Hospital and the University created the "portfolio diet," which includes regular consumption of tree nuts and high amounts of fiber from oats, barley and vegetables. Zoellick on Monday.A report, jointly being prepared by the World Bank, China's Ministry of Finance, and the Development Research Center of the State Council, will be released later this year to support China in identifying the many challenges and policy choices it will face in the next two decades, as the country seeks to avoid the so-called "middle-income trap," a stage of economic development that has slowed progress in many countries, Zoellick said.Regarding this autumn as "a sensitive time facing the world's major economies," Zoellick said many countries, including the United States, the European Union and Japan, were facing the similar fundamental challenge of restructuring for sustainable economic growth."Perhaps the challenge is more difficult for China as the country has already made remarkable progress, and thus it's not easy to persuade people to make a change," he said.Commenting in Beijing on a weekend workshop with senior Chinese officials and outside experts, Zoellick said there was agreement that China will have to rebalance its economy, improve the environment, reduce inequality and advance the quality of life for its people while at the same time maintaining rapid growth."In the near term, inflation is China's priority, as Premier Wen Jiabao mentioned," Zoellick said, adding that the Chinese government was moving in the right direction, though it was too early to have the problem solved.In next 10 years, however, Zoellick said he could not imagine China continuing to rely on exports for growth, especially when developed economies have had difficulties recovering.By shifting away from an over-dependence on export-led growth to a greater reliance on domestic demand and investment, China could benefit not only itself but the world economy, he said.As China's 12th Five-Year Plan has pointed the way forward with what needs to be done, Zoellick said the ongoing research will try to help with the "how."He said the report will cover issues such as how China can complete its transition to a market economy; how to promote open innovation; how to advance green development; how to deliver equality of opportunity and social security to citizens; how to strengthen the fiscal system, and how China can become a responsible stakeholder in the international system.During his stay in China, Zoellick also visited the country's wasteland-turned-grain-producing-base in the northeast, including a farm, a rice mill, an agricultural research center and a modern agricultural machinery park, and learned about how this land transformation had affected local people's lives.As the world population is expected to hit 9 billion by 2050, Zoellick said the World Bank has been urging G-20 countries to prioritize food issues."China feeds 20 percent of the world's population with less than 10 percent of the world's agricultural land and less than six percent of its water, so China could make a significant contribution to global food security," Zoellick said.
