SAN YSIDRO (CNS) - A 61-year-old man who ran into a street in San Ysidro, tripped and fell, was run over by an SUV and killed, authorities said this morning.The man exited a business in the 500 block of E. San Ysidro Boulevard at 2:05 p.m. Friday and as he reached the asphalt of the street, tripped and fell face first and was run over by a Cadillac Escalade pulling out of an adjacent parking lot, Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department said.The pedestrian, who was not identified, sustained fatal injuries, Heims said. 546

(AP) — A Southern California man charged with the murder of a University of Pennsylvania student carried out the killing because the victim was gay, prosecutors said Thursday.A hate crime sentencing enhancement was being added to a murder charge against 21-year-old Samuel Woodward for the death of 19-year-old sophomore Blaze Bernstein, Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said.Since Bernstein's body was found in January at a park near his parents' Lake Forest, California, home, investigators reviewed Woodward's cellphone, laptop and social media and found hateful materials against a range of groups and substantial evidence Bernstein was killed because he was gay, Rackauckas said.RELATED: High school classmate charged with murder in death of Penn student"We have no room for this kind of hate in our society," Rackauckas told reporters.Woodward, who is from the upscale seaside city of Newport Beach, has pleaded not guilty to the killing. My whole family is heartbroken," said a tearful Melanie Clark.Shelly, a 20-year-old leopard tortoise, disappeared about three weeks ago. Clark and her husband returned home from a trip and opened the sliding door but Shelly never came in. Days before returning, Clark says her daughter put down some lettuce on the backyard patio. The couple discovered it half-eaten, which was odd. Usually, Shelly comes back and finishes it.Still, Clark wondered if Shelly wandered off. "We checked all along the fence and saw no gaps," said Clark, who believes it all adds up to a thief."I'm just afraid that somebody saw her and said, 'What a beautiful animal, and I want that beautiful animal,'" said Clark.The foot-long, ten-pound tortoise is unique in its yellow-and-black coloring and origins. "She was one of the last South Africa tortoises to be imported into the United States," said Clark.Clark purchased Shelly at a local pet store before a 2001 ban on the importing of leopard tortoises to the U.S. They were banned because of a certain tick the tortoises may carry.The tortoise, native to Africa, is sensitive to cold temperatures."I'm just worried about not being kept warm. We bring her inside when it's cold. We use special lights and heat to keep her warm," said Clark.She made a plea to the person who took Shelly."Please bring her home to us. She's not just a tortoise. (KGTV) - A grieving dog owner is searching for the owner of the dog who attacked her 8-year-old rescue at a Santee dog park.At Woodglen Vista Park late Monday morning, Heather Moreno, her 3-year-old daughter and her Pomeranian mix had just walked into the fenced-in off-leash area when they were greeted by a dog. Moreno says the black dog was about 70 pounds, possibly a German Shepard mix."Immediately the owner of the big dog approaches me and shouts, 'Don't worry, he's friendly.' The tail was wagging. My daughter petted him. Our dogs were sniffing each other,said Moreno.Moreno says she was glancing between her dog, Trigger, and her daughter. "Next thing I know, my dog is whining, and he has my dog in his mouth ... thrashing around like a dog toy," said Moreno.The attack would last an agonizing 30 seconds."I'm in panic mode. I'm shouting at the dog, shouting at the dog owner," said Moreno.The dog owner eventually pried open his dog's jaws. Moreno rushing Trigger to an emergency animal hospital, where she died from her wounds on the operating table. "I miss her a lot. She was my companion with everything," said Moreno, choking back tears.Amid the grief, Moreno has a warning for other dog owners at dog parks. "Just always be vigilant. Always be cautious.
