(KGTV) — A fundraising t-shirt made for an Escondido Police officer fighting brain cancer was banned from Palomar Hospital after someone deemed it racist.Escondido Police Officer Brett Byler, 31, seemed to have it all: a beautiful family and his dream job. But in February, his life turned upside down."He went for a bike ride, and he collapsed," Officer Byler's father, Jim Byler said. "He went to the emergency room, and four days later, he was having brain surgery."The young father of three was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Byler said the news was devastating, but the community immediately showed their support. Within days, a friend and employee at Palomar Hospital, where Officer Byler was doing rehab, asked if they could make a fundraiser t-shirt for Byler."I thought it was awesome. It was just an act of kindness and generosity, and it kind of overwhelmed us," Byler said, tearing up.The friend designed an original logo with the family's silhouette in front of an American flag with red white and blue stripes, each color representing fire, medical personnel, and police.Byler said it was a big hit. Along with the Gofundme, it raised a lot of money, and hospital staff wore the T-shirt for months."Everything was good, and then we found out that the shirt was being characterized as something that it was clearly never intended to be," Byler said.According to Palomar Hospital, a patient and staff member recently reported that the shirt was racist and that they were offended by it. The blue line in a similarly designed shirt has caused national controversy in recent months, where some have interpreted it as "Anti-Black Lives Matter." So the hospital asked staff wearing the shirt on-duty, to take it off immediately. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - The oldest tree at North County’s San Diego Botanic Garden is finding new life as a work of art.The Eucalyptus cladocalyx was planted 100 years ago at the Encinitas garden. It had to be euthanized last year because it was leaning and posing a threat to visitors, officials said.Artist Erwin Young “Mitch” Mitchell IV took the 30-foot stump and transformed it into a replica of a baobab tree. He expects to be finished this week."The Garden is a wonderful place, not only to visit, but to create such a great endeavor there is fantastic - I appreciate the opportunity," said Mitchell. "It is the first time I have ever changed a tree into another tree. (KGTV) - A woman was injured following a high-speed pursuit that ended with a rollover crash in Escondido Friday.A California Highway Patrol officer taking part in a saturation patrol for the Labor Day weekend saw the woman speeding on north Interstate 15 and Mission Road about noon, the CHP said.The woman exited and got back on the freeway in a stolen Toyota Corolla, heading south at speeds up to 100 miles an hour, said officers.Eventually, the woman crashed as she tried to to take the westbound SR-78 ramp. The car rolled over on the freeway embankment.CHP officers said the woman, who is in her 40s, was not wearing a seat belt. She was not thrown from the car.Paramedics found the woman unconscious and took her to the hospital.Alcohol and drugs were factors in the crash, officers said. 822

ENCINITAS, Calif., (KGTV) -- A day after a giant rock formation fell and killed three locals at Grandview Beach, geologist Dr. Pat Abbott assessed the damage. Shes off and wading in high tide, he explained the cause of the Friday's tragedy. "The waves come up and beat against the cliffs, and the gravity pulls on those cliffs day after day and year after year," Dr. Abbott said. "It just gradually weakens, and one day it can't take it anymore and just falls down."The waves nibble away the rock at the bottom, and the water for the ice plants on the top, brown, softer sediment weaken the formation. "All that does really is add weight to the cliff," Dr. Abbott said. " And of course, the more weight that is there, the stronger the gravity."But as we walked along the beach, we found many more problem spots. Just feet north of Friday's fallen rock, there is a formation of what looks to be a small cave. With no bottom support, the top will eventually break off. "When that falls, that's the same thing as having a cement wall fall on you," Dr. Abbott said. We walked a few more feet north and saw what he called another visible sign of danger. "This strong cliff here and this rock mass now is now detached from the main rock," Dr. Abbott pointed.The vertical fracture separated the front rock formation from the rest of the bluff. This is a sign that it is ready to form. Exactly when it falls, only Mother Nature will know. So the next time you decide on where o put down your beach towel, remember to study the rock behind you. "Look for fractures or overhanging rock masses, and don't go near those," Dr. Abbott warned. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Graffiti referencing the New Zealand mass shooting that left 50 people dead was discovered at the scene of a possible arson at an Escondido mosque early Sunday morning. According to police, the fire started around 3:30 a.m. at the Islamic Center of Escondido located near the intersection of 6th Avenue and Escondido Boulevard. Police believe members of the mosque were able to extinguish the flames before firefighters arrived. Seven people were inside when the fire was reportedly set. No one was injured and minimal damage was done to the building, according to police. "Our message to community is to make sure they keep a watchful eye out,'' Escondido Police Lt. Chris Lick said. "If they see something suspicious, especially around a house of worship, they should call police.''According to police, graffiti left behind by the suspect made reference to the mass shooting in New Zealand, though details on the graffiti weren't available. Police tell 10News they are investigating the incident as attempted arson and a possible hate crime. No suspects have been identified at this time. Following the fire, members of the mosque scheduled an interfaith prayer vigil. The event will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Islamic Center of Escondido. "Once again, we will stand together in love and prayer as we show our unified support for the members of this local Mosque and for the Muslim community at large.
