HAIKOU, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Conson landed at Yalong Bay of Sanya City, in south China's island province of Hainan, late Friday, causing casualties.Conson made landfall at 7:50 p.m., packing winds of up to 126 km per hour at the center, according to the disaster prevention office of Sanya, a tourist resort.It brought heavy rains and strong winds to Sanya, uprooting trees, pulling down billboards and light poles and partly cutting power supply.A security guard was buried in debris after a giant billboard toppled at about 7:26 p.m.. The man was found dead at about 11 p.m. after rescuers pulled away the billboard with the help of machines.A motorcycle rider was hit by a falling billboard and died at the site at about 8 p.m..The typhoon is expected to hover in the island for about 9 hours before it enters Beibu Bay on Saturday morning.The city had recalled to port all fishing boats by Friday noon and almost 40,000 people across the island had been relocated by 4:30 p.m..The typhoon, the first to hit China this year, has triggered high waves and cut some village roads.

HONG KONG, June 21 (Xinhua) -- After working in Beijing for 10 months, U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman said here Monday that trust was very important and was the fuel that powered the U. S.-China relations."Sometimes the tank is full, (and) sometimes it draws down. When it draws down like what happened early this year, the relations become sort of rocky," said Huntsman, who was invited by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce as one of its 150th anniversary speakers.Huntsman, who became U.S. Ambassador to China in August last year, gave five observations on the U.S.-China relations.Firstly, the mandarin-speaking U.S. diplomat said there were a lot less dramas in the U.S.-China relations than many people might imagine despite the occasional alarmist headlines."If you view the U.S.-China relations with a distance, you get the sense that the wheel is coming off the bus. But when in the middle of the relations, you would get less drama," he said."There is more respect ... (and) the ability to communicate on the very very sensitive issues. I don't have a panic button, no restart button. The relations have ups and downs, but overall relations are strong, stable and resilient," Huntsman said.Secondly, he said there are areas of difference but there are many more areas of convergence and what unites us is a lot more important than what divides the U.S. and China."Our success is increasingly tied to identifying our shared interests and to working towards practical solutions," said the 50- year-old diplomat.Thirdly, Huntsman said the two nations were not seeking to " impose our world views on one another" or "to remake one another."The U.S. and China would seek to understand each other better, to continue dialogues and to improve future prospects, he said.Fourthly, Huntsman said while hot political issues often grab public attention, the foundation of the U.S.-China relations was largely commerce and trade.Back in 1974 and 1975, two-way annual trade between the U.S. and China was somewhere between 500 million U.S. dollars to 1 billion U.S. dollars, but this year the U.S.-China trade would reach 400 billion U.S. dollars, making it the world's largest commercial relations, according to Huntsman.Even in the sensitive areas of imbalance, it began to narrow, he said. In 2000, China was the 11th largest export market of the U.S. while it was the third largest now.Fifth, Huntsman said long-term U.S.-China relationship should be based on investment in the next generation and real trust would be earned by people-to-people interactions.Huntsman reminded people of being realistic on the expectations over the U.S.-China relations. "It would never be a 100-percent paradise, nor a cold-war staredown. BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- China has evacuated 1,299 nationals from Kyrgyzstan where ethnic clashes have left at least 187 people dead, the Foreign Ministry said Thursday.The last chartered flight of China Southern Airlines, with 148 Chinese nationals aboard, landed at an airport in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, at 1:30 a.m. (Beijing time) Thursday from Osh in southern Kyrgyzstan.The return of the ninth chartered flight means the end of the three-day massive evacuation, which started on Tuesday.Chinese nationals walk out of the air bridge after another chartered plane carrying 191 Chinese nationals stranded in the violence-hit Kyrgyz city of Osh lands in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, June 16, 2010."After three days of efforts, the vast majority of Chinese nationals in Osh have been flown home," said Sun Dali, deputy director of the Department of Consular Affairs with the Foreign Ministry."But we will continue to pay attention to and contact the Chinese nationals who are still staying in Kyrgyzstan, and offer immediate assistance to them in light of the changes of the local situation," he added.

BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- The value of the gross output of China's auto industry surged 49 percent year on year to 2.086 trillion yuan (308 billion U.S. dollars) in the first half of the year, officials at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said Monday.At the same time, total export and import volume jumped 84 percent year on year to 50.66 billion U.S. dollars, according to a MIIT statement posted on its Web site.From January to July, China's auto output and sales both exceeded 10 million units. In July, China's auto output stood at 1.29 million units, up 16 percent year on year, while sales stood at 1.24 million units, up 15 percent year on year, MIIT said.Also, the Chinese government decided in June to extend an auto replacement subsidy program by six months until Dec.31 this year.Begun in June of 2009, the subsidy aims to help get highly polluting vehicles off the road while stimulating automobile consumption.Under the program, consumers who trade-in their used small-and medium-sized trucks and some mid-sized passenger vehicles for a new one are eligible to receive a subsidy of 3,000 to 6,000 yuan.By the end of May, the Chinese government had handed out 1.7 billion yuan in subsidies for 127,000 trade-in vehicles.The subsidy program has boosted domestic automobile spending by 15 billion yuan, according to officials at China's Ministry of Commerce.
