EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - Unforeseen problems at the East County Performing Arts Center will delay a renovation project and plans to turn the venue into a rock concert hall. They will also cost the city about million more to complete the project.The City Council approved the extra cost at their meeting on December 11th.The ECPAC has been closed since 2010, a casualty of the Great Recession.Over the years it fell into disrepair. But in 2017, city leaders put together a plan to reopen it. They signed a contract with concert promoter Live Nation to bring about 70 acts per year to the venue.Part of the deal called for nearly .3 million of renovations to make it more like a concert venue than a performance hall.RELATED: Renovations underway as Live Nation takes over East County Performing Arts CenterAs that work went on, other problems surfaced. Engineers found the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system needed to be replaced. They also found parts of the roof that needed repairs.The extra cost for those two combined is about .7 million.To prepare for any further problems that the city also agreed to add 2,000 to the budget as "contingency" money.The new money will come from the city's general fund, which had a surplus last year. They'll also use about 0,000 from the original budget for renovations that hasn't been spent yet.Speaking at the Council Meeting on the 11th, Mayor Bill Wells voiced support for the extra cost, saying the project shouldn't be done with "half measures.""Since we're investing so much in this and Live Nation doesn't want it to be a hot summer day in August and have the air conditioning go out, we collectively made the decision it was prudent to spend the extra money," Wells said.With the extra work, the venue will now open in the fall of 2019. EL CAJON (CNS) - A passenger in a vehicle was killed Sunday when its driver left the roadway in El Cajon and struck a light pole.The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene, the El Cajon Police Department reported.The driver allegedly was speeding westbound on Chase Avenue when the vehicle hit the pole near Wilson Avenue. Police and firefighters were dispatched at approximately 6:45 a.m. to the crash scene in the area of Chase and Wilson avenues.The driver was extracted from the vehicle, treated at the scene and then taken to a local hospital, police said. Neighbors are stepping in to fill the bellies of those in need.In El Cajon a bright yellow wooden box is perched next to the sidewalk. On it a sign reads, "Blessing Box".Inside it's stocked like a mini grocery store, with grains like rice and pasta, beans, canned vegetables and protein. Single serving hot chocolate, tea and oatmeal line the second shelf. On the top shelf, snacks, drinks, and items to round out a meal are ready for the taking.Andrea Roberts heard of a Blessing Box in 2018 on social media and immediately knew she needed one.Her friend had the same intuition and had her husband craft the wooden box. They surprised Roberts by dropping it off on her porch.Roberts painted the box, affixed a stand to it, and cemented the stand in the grass next to her sidewalk in September 2018.Momentum has been growing through social media and the urge to help during the pandemic."Yesterday was jam packed, I had several people come and bring stuff, so much stuff they left the excess on the porch," Roberts said.She lifted her garage door to unveil piles of food and shelves of canned food, illustrating the willingness to give by the community."I'm overwhelmed, really overwhelmed." Dozens fetuses and infant remains were discovered during Detroit police raids on two metro Detroit cemeteries on Wednesday as part of the state's investigation into Perry Funeral Home.According to police, the raids were prompted by a tip that there were between 100 and 125 fetuses from Perry Funeral Home being stored at the cemetery.Officers say they discovered 27 sets of infant and fetal remains that had improper or missing paperwork from Knollwood Cemetery in Canton, Michigan and 17 from Gethsemane Cemetery in Detroit.In October, officers found 36 fetuses in cardboard boxes and 27 more in freezers from inside Perry Funeral Home in Detroit. The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs revoked the funeral home's license and shut down the facility. Earlier that month, police also discovered 11 infant bodies in the ceiling of Cantrell Funeral Home, also in Detroit. 928
