On November 26, 2003, Centra “CeCe” Mazyc says she was doing a routine jump in the Army when the wind caused her parachute to collide with another jumper and as she hit the ground, she was instantly paralyzed from the waist down.Mazyc is one of nearly 5 million disabled American veterans, but she's hardly let her serious injury hold her back.Through the help of the nonprofit Disabled American Veterans, she was able to get back into her athletic nature.“It was the first time in my injury that I was able to do things like ski and walk, climb and scuba dive, things that I didn't know that I’d ever be able to do,” said Mazyc. “So, that was an important step in my rehabilitation process, and it proved to me that physical disability does not bar the doors to freedom at all, not mine.”That support and Mazyc’s competitive drive took her all the way to the 2012 Paralympic Games, where she threw the javelin.Disabled American Veterans helps more than 1 million veterans a year with things like access to education, health care and employment.They also provided unemployment financial relief during the pandemic to laid off veterans.Disabled American Veterans produced a new documentary around 100 years of war and wounded servicemen and women. ORLANDO, Fla. — Fans are calling on Disney parks to re-theme one of their most iconic rides.A petition posted on Change.org asks Disney to remove all references to its 1946 film "Song of the South" from Splash Mountain.The petition says the movie "steeped in extremely problematic and stereotypical racist tropes." The petition suggests Disney should re-theme the ride around "Princess and the Frog." Tiana, the main character in the film, is recognized for being Disney's first African-American princess.The petition had more than 8,000 signatures as of Thursday morning. The petition's current goal is set at 10,000 signatures.The call for change comes as the country continues to hold discussions surrounding racial injustice in the wake of George Floyd's death in Minneapolis police custody.Floyd's death caught the nation's attention after bystander video showed the 46-year-old man struggling to breathe while in police custody in late May. The video showed a white police officer, later identified as Derek Chauvin, kneeling on Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes.Chauvin was initially charged with third-degree murder before charges were upgraded to second-degree murder. He's also charged with manslaughter.The three other officers involved in Floyd's arrest — Tou Thao, J. One group is putting a unique twist on storytime, with the hopes of inspiring inclusion.The Salami Sisters don’t usually perform during the day. With full hair, makeup and dresses, the two started reading to children about six months ago at libraries.The stories read have themes about love, compassion and inclusion.The program is called Drag Queen Story Hour.Jonathan Hamilt brought the program to New York from San Francisco, and it has spread across the country.“It's one of the most attended story hours of our libraries,” says Hamilt. “Every time we go to a branch, librarians are like, ‘Wow! This has exceeded the number of any other program that we've had.’”As you might expect, Hamilt says the children come with questions, asking about their hair and real name.Some questions are more challenging than others.“Are you a boy or are you a girl? Why do you have a man's voice or why do you wear a dress?” says Hamilt of the questions the children ask.Hamilt says every answer and every story furthers their mission to instill tolerance and acceptance of everyone, and it's a message the parents are embracing.“I think it's very important to have diversity in kids programming, especially since a lot of drag shows aren't super kid-friendly,” says parent Maggie Beaumont.“Everybody accepts diversity, and I want my kid to experience it,” says another parent, Tomoko Shiina. “But at the same time, I'm also empowered by the atmosphere, as a parent and as a woman, as a person.”The Drag Queen Story Hour is not only a new perspective of storytime, but for many, it’s creating a new perspective of the world beyond it. 1644

(KGTV) — Oceanside lifeguards are warning beachgoers of multiple shark sighting off Oceanside Pier Friday.Lifeguards said they received multiple reports of an unknown species of shark, measuring about 12 feet in length, about 100 yards offshore on the south side of the pier just after 12:30 p.m.Two rescue vessels and a drone were sent out to the shark's last reported location, but no shark was located.RELATED: What to do if a shark attacks at San Diego County beachesThe waters have been cleared for swimmers and surfers for about 1 mile north and 1 mile south of the area, according to lifeguards.Waters will remain open Saturday, barring any other reported sightings.While shark sightings are rare along San Diego County's coastline, lifeguards are asking beachgoers to keep an eye out.RELATED: Beacon's Beach in Encinitas reopens following shark attackA 13-year-old boy was attacked by what is believed to have been a great white shark in September off the coast of Encinitas, just south.Keane Hayes was attacked while lobster diving at Beacon's Beach. Officers in Columbus, Ohio are crediting a good Samaritan for tripping a suspect who was reaching into his waistband while being chased by officers. The police department released video from the April 3 incident on Thursday. Cameras captured the man, who Columbus Police are calling "Bill," casually sticking out his leg outside of a public library as the suspect ran behind him. The suspect then went flying into the sidewalk, giving officers an opportunity to arrest the unidentified suspect. Police said that they recovered a Glock 9 MM pistol with a high capacity extended clip containing 29 rounds near the suspect. Columbus Police added that citizen likely saved the suspect's life as officers might have shot the suspect for pulling out the gun. In the video released by Columbus Police, Bill said that he could see the suspect was holding something from his waistband."I heard him hit and the gun went sliding out," Bill said. "He went one way and the gun went another.""Thank you 'Bill' for sticking your leg out for us," Columbus Police said on the department's Facebook page.Columbus Police did not say what the 18-year-old suspect was wanted for.  1217
