BEIJING, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese banks should set up an independent risk management system in line with its strategic expansion plan as part of efforts to ward off financial risks, China's banking regulator said Wednesday.The breakout of the global financial crisis highlighted the necessity of increasing management of differentiated sovereign risks, the China Banking Regulatory Commission said in a guideline published on its website.Just as Chinese banks were expanding throughout the world, the overseas risks they were facing were on the rise, the guideline noted.Sovereign risks refer to ones that banks are exposed to when overseas borrowers or debtors are unable to repay debt because of their countries' economic, political and social changes.Chinese lenders were required to differentiate risks according to the countries involved and make policies on the minimum potential loan loss provisions ranging from 0.5 percent to 50 percent, according to the guideline.The banks must meet the requirements under the guideline by June 1, 2011.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China's exports surged by 48.5 percent year on year in May, while the imports climbed 48.3 percent, the General Administration of Customs (GAC) announced Thursday.The growth rate for exports was 18.1 percentage points up from the figure for April, and the import growth rate dipped slightly from 49.7 percent reported in April.Exports totalled 131.76 billion U.S. dollars in May, said a statement on the GAS website, adding imports topped 112.23 billion U.S. dollars.Total foreign trade value rose 48.4 percent from a year earlier to 243.99 billion U.S. dollars in May. BEIJING, July 6 (Xinhua) -- China has sent 15,603 soldiers to participate in 18 United Nations peacekeeping missions since 1990, an official of China's Ministry of National Defense said Tuesday.Of the total, nine soldiers died while on the missions, said Tao Xiangyang.As of the end of June 2010, there were still 1,960 soldiers deployed in UN peacekeeping missions in nine mission areas or working in the UN peacekeeping department, Tao said.Also on Tuesday, a group of 38 foreign military attaches to China, who were from 36 countries, visited a training center for peacekeeping soldiers in Huairou District, suburban Beijing.

BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev discussed disasters and bilateral relations during a telephone conversation Tuesday.Medvedev conveyed his heartfelt condolences to China over its worst mudslides in decades and the great loss of life and property, expressing belief the Chinese government and people would overcome all difficulties and prevail over the disaster.He hoped the people injured would make a quick recovery and the mudslides-hit area would rebuild soon, noting that Russia was willing to provide assistance and support for China.Hu said the Chinese government had reacted immediately to the disaster in Zhouqu County of China's Gansu Province and was fully focused on the rescue and relief operations.Safeguarding the safety of civilians was the Chinese government's top priority and it had tried its best to rescue the people stricken by the Aug. 8 mudslides, which have left 1,254 people killed and 490 others missing so far, he said.Currently, relocation of the people affected, rescue and treatment of the injured, epidemic prevention, and reconstruction of infrastructure were underway in an urgent but orderly manner, he said.Hu also expressed China's appreciation of the Russian government and people after President Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin had been quick to send their condolences and offered help, respectively.China was also greatly concerned by Russia's deadly wildfires and identified with Russia over its great loss of life and property, said the Chinese president, adding that China had offered assistance.Under the staunch leadership of the Russian government, the Russian people did their best to fight the wildfire and effectively safeguarded the safety of its people and property, said Hu, who once again sent condolences to Russia on behalf of the Chinese government and people.
