SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The coronavirus pandemic is preventing many seniors in skilled nursing facilities from seeing their families. UC San Diego students are working to help combat their loneliness with their Sunshine 4 Seniors project. Students would spend their weekends visiting seniors as part of a volunteer project before classes were canceled at UC San Diego. The pandemic halted their visits. "We came up with this project, which was creating cards for seniors at St. Paul Senior Services," says student Olivia Michael. The goal of the project is for students to "step in and fill the loneliness and isolation that the senior citizen communities are feeling, especially during this pandemic," says Morgan Montoya. The students say loneliness in seniors can have damaging effects on the brain. "Olivia and I are near-cognitive science majors," says Montoya. "Our majors really helped us to understand the problems that loneliness poses. With senior citizens having an abundance of isolation and loneliness, it can actually deregulate the brain and cause a progression of Alzheimer's or depression."The Sunshine 4 Seniors project launched nearly a month ago. So far, more than 200 cards have been sent to seniors in skilled nursing facilities. The students say there are thousands of seniors who are not allowed to see their loved ones during this time. They hope to spread some sunshine to as many seniors as they can. "The goal is just to get as many people writing cards as possible," says Michael. "Any means that you have to do it, I just encourage you to get started." 1586

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has canceled its racing program this weekend, July 17-19. The cancellation follows 15 jockeys recently testing positive for COVID-19. Racing is slated to resume July 24."Assuming these individuals continue to show no symptoms, they will be isolated for a total of 10 days and should be able to resume their usual activities, including riding after that time,” said Dr. Eric McDonald, Medical Director, Epidemiology & Immunizations Services, County of San Diego.Racing at the track is set to return on July 24.The 15 jockeys who tested positive are believed to be asymptomatic, officials said. “Contact tracing procedures are underway in conjunction with the San Diego Health & Human Services Agency. However, a common factor among all but one of the riders that tested positive is that they rode at the recently concluded Los Alamitos meet.”The track ordered testing of all jockeys after two riders, Flavien Prat and Victor Espinoza, tested positive for COVID-19.Espinoza, who rode American Pharaoh to horse racing’s Triple Crown in 2015, spoke about his coronavirus diagnosis earlier this week on “The Winner’s Circle” podcast.Espinoza told podcast host Bram Weinstein that he took a COVID-19 test on July 7 and did not go to Del Mar’s opening weekend because he did not receive his results until July 10.The famed jockey described his symptoms as body aches and join pain, but he did not have a cough, fever or shortness of breath."It's different from a cold. Tuesday at 5 o'clock, it hit me hard for two hours. The next day I wake up normal like nothing happened. I feel fine ... The following day, my body starts hurting, every joint in my body, especially my legs, every joint from my hip to my ankles. And there's not much I can do, anything,” Espinoza told Weinstein.Espinoza added, "I've been in quarantine since March. I've been so careful to take care of myself, and it was one of those little things; you let your guard down, I went to Los Alamitos and that was it.”"Honestly, I can speak from my experience, I don't wish nobody to have this disease. Because, honestly, it's pretty bad,” Espinoza said.“Even though our jockey colony did not exhibit symptoms when they arrived at Del Mar, we made the decision to test everyone as part of protocols we have developed in conjunction with local medical experts and the San Diego County Health & Human Services Agency,” said Josh Rubinstein, Del Mar Thoroughbred President and COO. “We put these measures in place to help ensure the safety of all workers at Del Mar and our surrounding community.”Due to safety concerns, only jockeys based in California will be permitted to ride at Del Mar, the track said Wednesday. 2743

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The father whose two children died in a Rancho Bernardo home fire in 2017 was found guilty on all counts Monday. Jurors found Henry Lopez guilty of two counts of child endangerment, recklessly causing a fire causing great bodily injury, and two counts of involuntary manslaughter in the death of his two children.Prosecutors argued Lopez fell asleep with a lit cigarette, starting the fire that killed 7-year-old Isabella and 10-year-old Cristos and destroyed his condominium. Lopez’ attorney said a defective cell phone was the likely ignition source. Lopez woke up to find his home on fire and tried to escape but passed out from smoke, investigators said. Firefighters later found him and took him to the hospital. Deputy District Attorney Kyle Sutterley said Cristos died of burns to more than 80 percent of his body and Isabella died of smoke inhalation. "A parent has a responsibility to care for their children, a responsibility to protect their children, and if need be, to sacrifice themselves for their children. And Henry Lopez, on Oct. 28, 2017, he failed his children, and as a result, one of them burned to death, and one of them went to sleep and never woke up,'' Sutterley said in his closing argument. Lopez faced up to 16 years and 8 months in prison. 1296

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The city of San Diego may turn to homeowners to help chip away at the housing crisis. On Wednesday, the San Diego Housing Commission floated the idea of offering loans to homeowners in the city to build backyard granny flats to be rented out as affordable housing. The plan could help homeowners pay their mortgage while also providing more low-income units to those who qualify. "They present an opportunity to increase production at potential lower costs in a faster time frame and with a smaller environmental footprint," said Jeff Davis, the housing commission's chief of staff.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: San Diego's housing market cooling down, new report showsThe commission pitched the idea to the city's Land Use and Smart Growth committee Wednesday. Councilmembers on the committee appeared to be in support of the idea. Commission staffers said it was too early to know details about the loan, but if all goes as planned, they could be offered by next year. The idea comes about a month after Poway Mayor Steve Vaus floated a plan for his city to pay to build granny flats in backyards to be rented as affordable homes. The city would take a cut of the rent for about ten years before the homeowner gets it outright. Vaus said Wednesday the city of Poway was studying his idea.RELATED: Realtors expect busy spring for buyers and sellersMeanwhile, San Diegans continue to deal with increasing rents - the average now nearly ,200 a month, Zillow says. Angie Samples, who lives in Hillcrest, said her landlord just told her the rent would be going up in the next year. She doesn't believe she'll be able to stay once she retires in five or so years. "As much as I love it here, my families here, my grown children, my grandson," she said. "I think everybody has a roommate." 1815
