SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diegans could soon be using just their faces to board a plane, a cruise ship or get into a rock concert.It's because more companies are testing, or rolling out, the controversial facial recognition technology. "Facial recognition is great if it works. If it doesn't, it produces problems," said Stephen Cobb, senior security researcher at ESET. A Ticketmaster-owned company will soon test facial recognition to get people into events faster. In other words, a person could theoretically upload an image of their face onto an app, and then go right into the event without stopping for a ticket scan or, potentially, a security check.Jet Blue rolled out the facial recognition technology last year, and Royal Caribbean cruises is starting to do the same. "It sounds alright but it also sounds kind of weird to have your face in there," said Kathy Nagy, who used a mobile ticket to get into Wednesday's Padres game. "I think that having a ticket on your phone is just as fast as showing your face."Cobb said there are many concerns over how companies will maintain and protect people's data, including even whether they have the capabilities to avoid breaches."I don't see any commercial roll out of facial recognition which is purely around efficiency," he said. "Frankly, I have doubts around efficiency of the technology at this point."U.S. Customs and Border Protection is already using facial recognition technology at Lindbergh Field to scan international arrivals. Trump declared he could keep parts of the government closed for "months or even years" as he and Democratic leaders failed in a second closed-door meeting to resolve his demand for billions of dollars for a border wall with Mexico. “We did a lot of wall in San Diego,” Trump said at a White House news conference. “They wanted it very badly.” Trump cited concerns about the U.S.-Mexico border, including entry by terrorists, drug smuggling, and human trafficking. San Diego County’s congressional representatives emailed comments to 10News regarding the president’s statements. “San Diegans view our proximity to Mexico as an opportunity, not a threat, and we recently celebrated building a bridge between our two countries – not a wall – a bridge with adequate customs staffing so people can travel back and forth easily, and legally,” wrote Rep. Scott Peters. “San Diegans want smart, innovative border security – not the wasteful wall that President Trump wants to build as a monument to himself.” Congressman Duncan Hunter, San Diego County’s lone Republican representative, issued a statement through his public information officer. “Congressman Hunter believes President Trump needs to stand strong on the issue of border security and his description of it as a ‘national emergency’ means he has a firm grasp of its importance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are investigating the death of a man they say appeared to have been in an altercation right before his death.SDPD officers responded to a medical distress call just after 2 p.m. Tuesday inside a home at 6600 Springfield Street in Encanto. When police arrived, San Diego Fire-Rescue crews were already there performing CPR on a man.Police say the man was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.Homicide detectives arrived and began investigating. Wednesday, police said investigators learned that the man was involved in a physical altercation and injured before his death. They add that the man had difficulty breathing and collapsed.The 45-year-old man, identified Thursday as Antoine Deonte Dorsey, was a resident of the home and has been identified, but his name is being withheld at this time, police say.Police are now trying to locate witnesses of the altercation. According to San Diego Gas and Electric, nearly 24,000 people, mainly in East County, are at risk of having their power shut off. Residents in Alpine say they’re gearing up for possible outages. Employees at the Alpine Beer Company told 10News when the power goes down, their protocol is to close the bar, but keep their stock nice and cool.
