Spectators might have to kiss a decades-old tradition goodbye in Savannah's St. Patrick's Day parade.Women in the crowd are known to dash out into the streets and plant a smooch on uniformed service members marching in the Georgia port city's St. Patrick's Day parade, the second-largest in the United States and third-largest in the world.But military officials and parade organizers are hoping to curb amorous paradegoers this year.The Savannah St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee announced last week it wants the pastime to come to a halt, something it's been attempting for years.The practice predates the 1960s but has gotten out of hand over time, said Brian Counihan, general chairman of city's parade committee.Kevin Larson, spokesman for nearby Fort Stewart, said that the military is just asking people to police themselves. It's not a law or a rule. Larson said that the soldiers marching in the parade are at work. They have to maintain their professionalism because they are representing the Army."At the end of the day, we enjoy taking part in these events," Larson said. "But we do need people to respect our soldiers' space."The bystanders running into the streets can also spark safety and security concerns."You can imagine when you have all these people marching, it causes a disturbance," Counihan said.He said the rush interrupts the movement of floats, causes service members to lose their formation and results in huge delays.The parade committee has tried to stop people from rushing into the streets before. Years ago, it told participants on floats not to throw beads or candy out into the crowd as a way to prevent anyone from getting hurt.The Savannah event started more than 190 years ago. About 280 units, including bands, soldiers and floats, march through the downtown streets of Georgia's oldest city.With this year's parade on Saturday, the committee is expecting more than 500,000 to show up, and all the hotels in the area have sold out, Counihan said.Typically, those watching the parade can just run into the streets and plant one on any passing soldier. Larson said that military officials know the bystanders can't be forced to stop."There are some people who like it and some who don't," he said. "It comes down to personal preference."He said that officials have suggested that soldiers who do not want to be kissed can say no or offer a handshake instead.Still, the parade committee chief insists, "We are not party poopers."This is a large event, and we are just trying to discourage people from interfering with these units," Counihan said. Some Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students say going to school in the morning now feels more like going to an airport, or even worse, going into a prison.FULL COVERAGE: Parkland school shooting“I’m all for school safety implementations, but I don’t like the feeling of a prison," said Jack Macleod, a junior. "It’s supposed to be a place of education and I can’t really get back into that sense of academia and creativity with all that’s going.”On their first day back from spring break, Broward County School District enacted new security measures at the high school in an effort to keep students safer.Jack and his classmates weaved through rows of barricades to get into school. Jack tweeted a video of the experience.“It’s seriously like the TSA," he said in the video.Jack's peers also took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the security measures.“Posting stuff like that gives the whole audience of Twitter a big insight into what it’s like now in the day of Marjory Stoneman Douglas," Jack said.Jack said there are no metal detectors at the entrances yet, but he's expecting that to come soon.Some students tweeted asking if pre-check will be available like at the airport and if they need to start taking off their shoes when they get to school.However, the new clear backpacks got most of the heat on social media. “I don’t think that it does anything," Jack said. "I don’t think the issues that have come out of this movement that people are debating and disputing about are backpack related.”Students call the backpacks a violation of privacy. “We earned that right to privacy and we kind of got it confiscated when two knives were taken to school," said Annabel Claprood, a sophomore.Camern Lo put a piece of paper in her new clear backpack saying, ‘This backpack is probably worth more than my life.'Some students say while they understand the intentions are good, these measures are band-aids to cover up the real problems."I don’t think that it does anything," Jack said. "I don’t think the issues that have come out of this movement that people are debating and disputing about are backpack related."Students also have to wear their I.D. badges at all times. They received lanyards Monday to wear them on."They did not check my I.D.," Annabel said. "They did not check anything. I walked in. No questions asked. It was just like it was before nothing’s really changed except now you can see our personal items.”Annabel took her ideas on how to make her school safer straight to the superintendent during a meeting right before spring break."Bring your voice to the people who will listen who are going to do something with your voice," she said.She said she wants to see more modern technology used to secure the school. She says that’s what would make her and her peers feel safer, something she knows adults are trying to do.“Until we see all of us on the same page working together, nothing’s going to happen," she said.“I don’t know what exactly America needs right now, but I do know that we’re all talking about it," Jack said.Florida Highway Patrol troopers are guarding entrances to the school as Governor Rick Scott promised nearly two weeks ago. Broward County Sheriff’s Office has a heavy presence outside the school as well. 3282

Sonna Anderson was enjoying a horseback ride through the Badlands in North Dakota in September 2017 when her horse, Cody, got spooked, jerked toward a fence and tripped on a cow track in the dirt. The horse rolled onto Anderson, who hit her head, briefly lost consciousness and broke three ribs.The 911 transcript shows that an ambulance reached the 60-year-old judge from Bismarck within 20 minutes. Anderson was secured on a backboard and ready to go when an air ambulance, a helicopter with a medical crew, also landed at the scene. Anderson says her husband asked repeatedly whether the ground ambulance crew could take her by ground; there was a hospital less than an hour's drive away."But he was told that [the air ambulance] was necessary. They never told him why it was necessary or how much it cost, but they insisted I had to go by air ambulance," Anderson said. "But it's so odd there is nothing in the record that indicated it was time-sensitive or that I needed to be airlifted."For that one helicopter ride, to a hospital farther away in Bismarck, records show that Valley Med Flight charged Anderson ,727.26. Sanford Health Plan, her insurance, paid ,697.73. That left Anderson with a ,029.53 bill.Valley Med Flight did not respond to requests for comment."It shocked me," Anderson said. "I kept thinking, 'my God.' I got a copy of the 911 and air ambulance report to see how long they actually spent with me, when really, it was only around 45 minutes. I wrote [the air ambulance company] a letter telling them that I thought it was all outrageous." 1583
