BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- An Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) could make the Chinese mainland and Taiwan complement each other and achieve the best win-win results, Yao Jian, spokesman of the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), said here Monday.     "The ECFA could enhance the well-being of the people across the Taiwan Straits," Yao said in a statement on the ministry's website.     He added that with increasingly strengthened cross-Straits economic cooperation, the signing of the ECFA should be in line with the development of the cross-Straits relationship and the characteristics of the mainland-Taiwan economic and trade cooperation.     The ECFA would help reduce trade barriers gradually and bring positive effects to the economies, trade and most industries across the Straits, according to a latest research report completed by the academy of international trade and economic cooperation under the MOC.     Official figures revealed that the combined cross-Straits trade volume stood at 129.22 billion U.S. dollars in 2008.

HUA HIN, Thailand, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Australian counterpart Kevin Rudd called here on Saturday for an early signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two Asia-Pacific major economies. "The mutual-respect, mutual-trust and cooperation between China and Australia, both as big countries in the Asia-Pacific region, will not only yield tangible benefits for the two nations, but also have a positive impact on a larger scale," Wen said in talks with Rudd on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summits.     The key to maintaining a sound and steady development of bilateral ties lies in their respect for and care about each other's core interests and major concerns, Wen said, pledging to work together with Australia to boost their ties. SIEM REAP, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met here with Cambodia's deputy prime minister on Sunday and voiced China's willingness to push for a higher-level relations with the country.     During the meeting, Xi said bilateral friendship could date back to ancient times and both sides have maintained close contacts. Describing the ties as an example for friendly cooperation, Xi said the Chinese side is willing to enhance cooperation with Cambodia in various fields and push bilateral relations to a higher level, so as to bring more benefits to the two peoples. BEIJING, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- China's Central Meteorological Station (CMS) on Sunday evening issued the third orange alert since the first one on Saturday, extending the warning against a strong cold wave and strong wind.     Temperature was expected to fall by 14 to 18 degrees Celsius from Sunday night to Tuesday in central Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Shaanxi Province and the western parts in regions along the Yellow and Huaile rivers, or 16 to 18 degrees Celsius in some of these regions, according to the CMS. BEIJING, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese vice premier Li Keqiang has called for efforts to build the South-to-North Water Diversion Project into a water-efficient and environment-friendly project.     Li made the remarks at a meeting held by the State Council on Tuesday, saying the government should stick to policies regarding resource-conservation and environment-protection in the construction work.     Li ordered relevant departments to intensify their efforts on pollution control and eco-environment protection in both the water source area and areas along the project in the course of construction.     Li, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stressed that a good job on the resettlement of residents is essential.     Addressing the meeting, vice premier Hui Liangyu ordered attaching great importance to quality and safety, strengthening pollution treatment and properly resettling local residents.     Launched in 2002, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, consisting of eastern, middle and western routes, is designed to divert water from the water-rich south of the country, mainly the Yangtze River, to the dry north.     By the end of October, the government has invested 34 billion yuan (or 4.98 billion U.S. dollars) in the eastern and middle routes, and part of the project has contributed to alleviate the water strain in Beijing.
