President Donald Trump is expected to grant a pardon to Scooter Libby, who was the chief of staff to then-Vice President Dick Cheney, a White House official said.Libby had been convicted of perjury in the investigation into who leaked the identity of CIA officer Valerie Plame.President George W. Bush had commuted the sentence but would not grant a pardon.News of the expected pardon was previously reported by ABC News.Trump used his pardon authority?last year?when he pardoned Joe Arpaio, a controversial sheriff in Arizona who had been convicted of criminal contempt related to his hard-line tactics going after undocumented immigrants. In the first pardon, Trump did not follow his predecessors' practice of consulting with lawyers at the Justice Department before announcing his decision. 806

Politifact combed through hundreds of lies in 2018 and revealed its "Lie of the Year." This year, the political fact-checking website, picked the online smear campaign against the Parkland students after the deadly school shooting in Florida.Gina Montalto, 14, was one of the students killed during the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. For her family, this will be the first Christmas without her.“It is by far the toughest,” says her father, Tony Montalto. “Gina loved the holiday season. She loved decorating for Christmas.”Seventeen families lost loved ones in the shooting. But not even a tragedy involving children stopped online trolls from starting conspiracy theories that falsely accused students of being “crisis actors.” Others claimed the teens had secretly organized before the shooting.“We are not actors,” says Montalto. “We are not politically driven. We’re parents and spouses that lost our loved ones.”The amount of lies leveled at the Parkland students and their families were enough for Politifact to name the smears as its lie of the year.“We felt the smears against the Parkland students were so egregious against young people who had done nothing to bring this on that it did bring it to another level,” said Angie Holan, a Politifact editor.Holan said the smear campaign is a troubling sign of where the country is in these polarizing times.“If people want to come forward and debate political issues because of something that happened to them in their everyday lives and then they would get smeared – it just seems like something new and disturbing,” said Holan. After the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Montalto became the president of Stand with Parkland, a national organization that pushes for laws that address violence in schools. He said it makes him angry and sad that some people think the shooting was fabricated.“It’s very hard to think that people would believe that this could be a hoax,” he says. “As we experience the tremendous loss, we know the reality of the situation. Every day we walk past an empty bedroom.”In determining the lie of the year, Holan said she and her team look for the most significant falsehoods and that are politically significant. In Politifact’s online poll, readers chose a different lie of the year from President Donald Trump. At a campaign rally back in October, President Trump said, "The Democrats want to invite caravan after caravan of illegal aliens into our country. And they want to sign them up for free health care, free welfare, free education, and for the right to vote." Politifact rated the claim false and called the comments inaccurate and a distortion of the facts. 2739

President Donald Trump had lunch with National Rifle Association leaders Wayne LaPierre and Chris Cox over the weekend, he said Monday. The President also said state governors should not be "afraid" of the NRA's lobbying power. The lunch was announced by the President during a meeting with governors at the White House Monday morning. The White House did not previously announce the meeting or provide a readout.Trump defended the NRA, saying the gun-rights group wants to act."There's no bigger fan of the 2nd Amendment than me and there's no bigger fan of the NRA, and these guys are great patriots they're great people, and they want to do something," the President said."They're going to do something -- and they're going to do it, I think, quickly -- I think they want to see it," he added.Trump told the governors not to be afraid of the NRA, but also said it was OK to fight them every once in a while."Don't worry about the NRA, they're on our side," Trump said. "Half of you are so afraid of the NRA, there's nothing to be afraid of.""And you know what, if they're not with you, we have to fight them every once in a while. That's OK. They're doing what they think is right," he added.Cox is the executive director of the NRA's lobbying arm, the NRA Institute for Legislative Action. LaPierre is the NRA's CEO. Trump said he also met with David Lehman of the NRA-ILA.  1389

Poway, Calif., (KGTV)-- The City of Poway's water boil advisory was officially lifted on Friday, but the inconvenience continues for many residents. Tenants of two dozens units at the La Privada Apartments are being evicted suddenly after management discovered rain damage. When it rains, it pours, especially for Poway resident, Allan Moore. "We have a week left," Moore said. "We have to be out by the 15th."Right in the middle of last week's city-wide water boil advisory, he and tenants in 23 other units at the La Privada Apartments were surprised with an eviction notice. It said they must leave the premises and turn in their keys by December 15, 2019. Moore said management explained that the same set of storms that destroyed the city's water system caused the water damage to the units. According to the notice, Moore will get his security deposit, December, and part of November's, rent paid back."I'm very clueless about it right now," Moore said. "And I haven't had hardly any communication."According to law experts, people in Moore's situation do have rights. Laws state that the landlord or property manager must give "reasonable" time for tenants to move out. The specifics of that time frame are in the provisions of the leasing agreement. In Moore's case, the property manager or tenant has the right to terminate a leasing contract if repairs are expected to take longer than 60 days. In this case, management company, Capital Growth Properties, states the repairs could take up to six months. How much assistance the landlord gives, such as finding new or temporary housing, is up to the property manager. Experts told 10News, in some cases, if the management companies own other properties, they may relocate tenants into unaffected, open units. However, Moore says he has not heard of this option from Capital Growth Properties. The rest, such as additional living expenses and food during the inconvenience, is up to their renter's insurance. In the meantime, Moore's house is a mess. "Christmas has kind of been put on hold," Moore sighed. A nutcracker and one sad set of lights are the only signs of the holidays in the usually festive home. "We're just going to have to take it down before Christmas, so we're like, 'let's just stop decorating,'" Moore said. Moore just hopes they find a place soon before they get kicked out. "We are just going to try to play it by ear and take everything one day at a time," Moore said. 10News spoke to the on-call manager at Capital Growth Properties. She referred us to their corporate office. No one was available for comment. 2602

POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) — A 27-acre parcel in Black Mountain Ranch once planned to be the site of a new middle school could instead turn into a Costco development. The Poway Unified School District board voted 4-0 on Thursday to pursue a long-term lease with Costco to transform the site into a mixed-use retail, restaurant, and housing complex, plus a warehouse. The district has twice declared the property at the northeast corner of Camino del Sur and Carmel Valley Road as surplus: first in 2012, and then reaffirmed in 2019. "This site has an extremely lucrative opportunity for the district and I, for one, don't see how we can turn this down," said board president Michelle O’Connor-Ratcliff. "Let Costco go figure out what the community will accept."The move, however, is being met with concern from parents in the district. Chasmine Grismer, a district parent who has lived near the Black Mountain Ranch site for a decade, expressed concern over traffic, the environment, wildfire evacuation, and demand on schools. "By bringing in an apartment complex, you're going to be bringing in families, families with children, who again will need space in schools. Our schools are already impacted," she said. A spokesman for Costco declined to comment, saying the company does not address upcoming real-estate transactions. 1330
