According to Escondido Police, the attack happened on Maywood Street and Washington Avenue around 10:17 p.m. on February 12. Police say it appears three teenagers walking in the area were confronted with a machete-wielding man. ESCONDIDO (KGTV) - Employees of an Escondido golf course are frustrated and at their breaking point after their boss missed August 3rd's paycheck.UPDATE: Business owner paid employees missed and upcoming paycheck.Employes of the?Castle Creek Golf Course & Country Club said they heard their boss had a stroke on the first of the month and that was what caused the pay to be late. Employees were too afraid to speak on camera but said it wasn't the first time payment has been delayed.Golfers also said they've seen the course deteriorate since Osama Alkasabi took ownership in October.An employee said several people have already quit and some have their final day on the job this week.Alkasabi also owns two OAAI gas stations. Employees there vehemently defended Alkasabi but confirmed they hadn't been paid either. Employees there said Alkasabi had heart surgery."They missed only one, and that wasn't intentional," Alkasabi said over the phone. He blamed the delay on a car accident. "My car landed over the curb, and I arrived at the hospital here and had head surgery to make sure there is no bleeding, no fracture or damage," he said that happened August 1 off SR-78 near the Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside.10News spoke with Oceanside Police and California Highway Patrol and neither have records of a crash in that area for the entire week.Alkasabi's gas stations are running out of gas. FALLBROOK, Calif. (CNS) - A fire that broke out at a Fallbrook home Friday morning spread to surrounding vegetation, but firefighters halted the blaze at a quarter-acre.The blaze was reported just before 4:45 a.m. at an estimated 3,000-square-foot house in the 40300 block of Sandia Creek Drive, San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Pat McEvoy said.North County Fire Protection District crews responded and found the structure fully engulfed, Cal Fire Capt. Thomas Shoots said. Cal Fire crews were called in once the flames spread to the vegetation surrounding the home.By 5:40 a.m., firefighters had halted the spread of the fire at a quarter-acre, Shoots said. Crews were expected to remain on scene for at least two hours to mop up any hot spots.Deputies and neighbors helped evacuate about 50 horses from the property, McEvoy said. Experts say language barriers, living situations, and access to healthcare are among the reasons Latinas make up most COVID-19 cases among pregnant women.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention collected information from 11,000 pregnant women who tested positive for the virus. Of those women, 4,500 were Latina.Tri-State data mirrors national statistics. Dr. Amy Rule, assistant professor of clinical pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, said at one point, 59% of mothers who were positive for COVID-19 identified as Hispanic or Latina.“Latina mothers only make up about three to four percent of our moms giving birth in the Greater Cincinnati area, so the disparity is quite dramatic,” Rule said.Alfonso Cornejo, president of Cincinnati’s Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, said the numbers are not surprising.“Hispanics are probably the only group growing in the state of Ohio, and our population is younger, and we have more kids per family,” Cornejo said.Latinas account for most of the COVID-19 cases among pregnant women for varied reasons, including occupation, Rule said.“Many of them are essential workers and don’t always have everything they need, whether that be PPE or sick leave,” Rule said. “They’re more likely to use public transportation.”Cornejo said living situations could also be a contributing factor.“They live in apartments where they are in close contact with their older brother, the spouse, you have four people in two rooms or three rooms and that also contributes to this,” Cornejo said. “The same thing with the African American group.”This week, the number of pregnant African American mothers with COVID-19 has risen to 31%, while the number of pregnant Latinas with the virus dropped from 59% to 42%, according to Rule.Although the number has lowered recently, the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati Children’s, and the Latino Health Collaborative are launching a hospital and community-based survey on the issue.“We want to understand more about the knowledge community members have of COVID-19 and prevention of COVID-19 and barriers they might experience in being able to practice prevention behaviors like masking or social distancing and also accessing care,” Rule said.WCPO's Paola Suro first reported this story. 2290

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — Opening a new small business in the middle of this pandemic is a risky move, but San Diegans are doing it. Candles on Tap in downtown Encinitas is taking the chance."Today is a big, nerve-wracking, exciting day but we are opening to the public," CEO and co-founder Chantel Johnson said. She and CFO and co-founder Marcus Wandell are hopeful about their new venture. "The feature event is the scent bar where you pull up a chair and pour your own blend," said Wandell. Johnson added, "We are a custom scent bar so when people come in, they’re able to hand pour their own soy candles, diffusers, and fragrance sprays and they get to choose from over 90 scents." Wandell says some of his personal favorites in their shop include a scent called "old books" and they also have a "cannabis" smell.The two are well aware of what they’re getting into. "We're opening in the middle of a pandemic and it's a brick and mortar store so what could go wrong, right?" Wandell said jokingly.Yet, they say they see this time as the perfect opportunity. “There's pent up energy and demand to get out and do something as long as it’s safe so we're seizing on that need in the community for folks to find an experience to do with their loved ones and friends,” says Wandell.The pair are not alone. The U.S. Census reports almost 3.3 million business applications have been filed this year which is up 700,000 from this time last year. There were reportedly more than 1.6 million quarterly applications. In California alone, week 43 saw almost 9,000 applications which is a 25% increase from this time last year.“Some of our friends [say we’re] so brave.
