DENVER – Psychologists and social workers from Denver Public Schools were on-hand at Joe Shoemaker Elementary School Monday morning after a fourth-grade student died as a result of suicide late last week.The Denver County Coroner’s Office on Monday confirmed the boy, 9-year-old Jamel Myles, died as a result of hanging shortly after 11 p.m. on Thursday.On Friday, Shoemaker Elementary School Principal Christine Fleming sent a letter home to families at the school that Jamal had died. Fleming did not discuss the manner by which the boy had died, but shared a guide showing signs of stress that students might be showing in the wake of the boy’s death.“Our thoughts are with the student’s family at this time,” Fleming wrote. “We will continue to process this sad news as a school community, and again, please feel free to reach out as needed for ongoing support.”Jamal's mother Leia Pierce told the Denver Post that the suicide was a result of being bullied after the boy came out as gay. “My child died because of bullying. My baby killed himself,” Pierce told The Denver Post on Monday. “He didn’t deserve this. He wanted to make everybody happy even when he wasn’t. I want him back so bad.”Pierce went on to say, “He was scared because he is a boy and it’s harder on boys when they come out. (KGTV) - A trio of teenage girls is helping the Community Resource Center fill their "Holiday Baskets" this year.The girls, Lucie Babcock, Talia Buzi and Abbie Raysman, donated hundreds of dollars' worth of toys, food and household items to the CRC's yearly campaign."It's just a great feeling to know you're givine and helping people have an amazing holiday season," Lucie says.The three girls held a bake sale earlier this month to raise money. They sold muffins, cookies, brownies, coffee and orange juice in their Carmel Valley neighborhood."It was so much fun," says Abbie. "Lucie's brother was dancing in the middle of the street with a sign, stopping traffic."The bake sale raised around 0, which the girls used on a shopping spree for the donations.The CRC Holiday Baskets program helps 1,600 needy families in the North County. It gives them toys, clothes, food and more for the Christmas season. Organizers say they're impressed with the young girls' desire to give, and that it's small donations like these that help them serve so many people.Lucie started donating to Holiday Baskets when she was 9 years old. Over the years, her bake sale grew to the point where she needed help. Her friends Talia and Abbie were happy to lend a hand."I think it's a really great organization," says Talia of the CRC. "This is a great way to help people who are less fortunate."Lucie says it's all about making sure other kids get the same feeling of joy she does during the holidays."That's what I try to think about, that a kid who's not expecting anything can wake up and have something like this. DESCANSO, Calif. (KGTV) - Reports of a positive COVID-19 test at an East County Catholic church are raising concerns about possible exposure.The church is Our Lady of Light Catholic Church in Descanso. On a Facebook post, a board member of the Descanso Town Hall reported a positive case was just revealed to the church pastor by a parishioner. In a statement, a spokesperson for the Catholic Diocese of San Diego says the parishioner is a volunteer who helps prepare the altar for services. She wore a mask and maintained social distance.According to the post, "the person who tested positive was actively involved in all mass and church activities while having symptoms for a week so exposure is possible."The woman remains ill and is now in quarantine at home.The post goes on to explain that exposure was possible for anyone who went to mass in the past two weeks, which includes some 16 different services.It's unclear how many people that totals, but one parishioner tells ABC 10News pre-pandemic attendance for bigger masses numbered in the dozens.The apparent positive test comes amid coronavirus shutdown orders banning indoor church services in the county.The Diocese says the pastor, Father Enrique Fuentes, received a coronavirus test. Any outdoor masses won't take place until the result is known.According to the Diocese, the county has not yet contacted the church about the positive case, but the pastor decided to go ahead and close the church for deep cleaning and inform other volunteers she was in contact with. 1539

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) -- A push is underway to protect the Del Mar bluffs from crumbling with a stabilization project set to start soon. It’s part of a long-term effort to protect the trains and tracks running along the fragile cliffs. Some residents say it’s not a permanent solution. "Anyone that's ridden on the trains through Del Mar… knows you have a great view there but that's because the train tracks are fairly close to the Del Mar bluffs."A little too close for comfort. Heavy rainfall this winter triggered several Del Mar bluff collapses, reminding the county just how fragile they are. "What was very tragic and unfortunate in Encinitas was loss of life. Bluffs in Del Mar had a number of failures just this past winter. And we were very lucky here was nobody on top or below when those bluffs failed."But Jim Linthicum, SANDAG's Director of Mobility, says right now the train tracks are safe. “Had a number of projects since 2003 to stabilize, but public doesn't normally see because they are buried piles 65 feet deep."Now they're in phase 4, the million dollar project includes repairing seawalls, storm drains and drainage channels. “We're even doing drainage on side, drainage holes, drain water out of bluffs to reduce pressure." "This is a short-term fix, you're trying to slow down the inevitable."Geologist Pat Abbott says the problem is a hard one to solve, but believes the current plan is just a band-aid. "The easiest thing to do, what has been done, is let's do a band-aid now and pass it on to the next generation as if it will be simpler for them to solve than us."Regional planners say they are thinking long term, hoping to construct a tunnel after the year 2050. But that will be costly and complex, so SANDAG says it will do what's necessary to protect what's here now. Monday night, the Del Mar City Council approved the encroachment permit, allowing SANDAG stabilization of bluff to move forward in September. 1957
