COVID-19 isn't the only risk this holiday season. Experts warn that the holidays bring a lot of hidden dangers for children, especially with everyone spending more time at home.In her 20 years at CHOC, a pediatric healthcare system in Orange County, California, Amy Frias has made it her mission to keep kids out of the hospital. She wears a lot of hats, helping families with everything from CPR courses to car seats and helmet safety.“Injuries are the leading cause of death and serious injury for children under 14,” Frias said. "It's all about prevention it's all about setting people up so that kids aren’t seriously injured or hurt.” This holiday season Frias says, we all need all the joy and happiness we can get. She advises caution about seasonal decor, especially if you've got young kids.“Things like keeping breakable ornaments up high on your tree, or maybe not having any breakable ornaments on your tree, and making sure that none of your lights are frayed and everything is in good working condition,” Frias said. She said to make sure you're considering age-appropriate gifts, be wary of toys with button cell batteries, and make sure kids can't access those compartments. She also warns that people need to be mindful of holiday plants, and stockings, which can pose a problem.“Mistletoe or holly berry those are two items that are extremely poisonous," Frias said. “Hang your stockings from your fireplace, but if you use your fireplace, remove the stockings from your fireplace before you use it." Frias added that parents should keep in mind that the glass on your fireplace is one of the hottest areas in your home and a young child with thin skin that touches it could have third-degree burns in seconds.When it comes to some of those bigger gifts, Frias reminds people about falls, which is what doctors tend to see the most of in pediatric trauma centers.“Bikes and scooters are great gifts to give kids," Frias said. "But also include a helmet. They need to have helmets and make sure it fits.” Dr. Nikhil Bhayani, who's an infectious disease specialist for a large health care group in North Texas said if you're planning a trip to see Santa Claus, do it while keeping COVID precautions in mind.“My kids wanted to see Santa Claus and the first thing I said was 'we’ll see what type of protective barrier they have what are they implementing,'" Bhayani said. "It was very interesting that Santa was 6 feet away and he was sitting in the back of the sleigh, but they had a Plexiglass separating the kids from Santa Claus."Right now, he says, his clinic is full of COVID-19 patients.“As a provider, I would encourage you to stay at home as much as possible," Bhayani said. "We are in the middle of another surge, hospitalizations are going up, and cases are going up."The doctor added that the best thing to do is use due diligence, keep everyone safe, and not overwhelm hospital systems."The best thing would be to celebrate at home with family, close family, and limit the number of people who come over to your house.” As for all those holiday experiences Bhayani said he can't urge enough caution.“I know that it's the holiday season and there is holiday fatigue, and people want to get out, but I tell people that if they want to be around to enjoy the holidays next year, let's do the right things now.” Frias added that everyone should enjoy those holiday cookies, but don't eat the dough and as we all hope to celebrate the end of 2020, celebrate with a mask on. 3503

Coronavirus cases have forced the postponement or cancelation of 10 college football games this weekend.Out of the 10 games, only one involved a Top 25 team. No. 10 Wisconsin has canceled its game against Purdue, marking the second weekend in a row the Badgers have not played. In recent weeks, Wisconsin announced a total of 27 virus cases among players and staff.The postponements and cancelations mark the most games disrupted due to the virus.While not postponed or canceled, the top college football game of the weekend, Clemson vs Notre Dame, will be played without Heisman Trophy candidate Trevor Lawrence. CLAIREMONT (KGTV) - A Clairemont couple is heartbroken after their homemade metal reindeer, that stood about 5-feet tall, was stolen off their front yard."Oh I loved it, I loved it! And you know my neighbors did too, they would comment on it," Shurli Wilkinson said neighbors first saw the reindeer appear perched on three palm tree trunks that acted as a pedestal."I wanted to make a deer for the front yard so we could decorate for Christmas," Metal Artist Don Rochrke said. He spent weeks creating the life-sized brown deer for his wife of 5 years.Wilkinson loves Christmas and was excited to put it out as soon as it was finished. "It's a wonderful time of the year, it's a time of sharing and giving, loving and expressing... It was something he did specially for me because I wanted the reindeer," she said as tears grew visible in her eyes.She was shocked when she woke up Sunday morning, looked out the bedroom window and saw it had vanished. "Apparently someone liked it enough to take it," Rochrke said. Wilkinson said he loves creating metal art and when he's finished, if he likes it, he wants to keep it, and if not, he's too embarrassed to think of someone else displaying it in their home. He's never sold his art.Instead, his home displays his vast collection, including floating whales in the kitchen, fish and turtles swimming on the walls and various waterfowl dotting the rooms.As he gets older, the work becomes more difficult."He's had his wrist fused and he has to have his shoulder replaced... I was thinking it was one of the last pieces of art that he would be doing," she said.The loss cutting that much deeper."Creating to me is the opposite of dying and since he's almost 80 and he's still creating it thrills me because I know he's living and enjoying life," Wilkinson said.The reindeer, serving as a symbol. One that she wants back, "it's just something precious that someone did for another person and for someone to take that away is heartbreaking."Wilkinson said they're now thinking about buying a surveillance system to keep something like that from happening again. Rochrke said he asked if the police could patrol the area, and was told the area has too little crime.Rochrke said the statue weighed around 50 pounds and probably took 'two guys and a truck' to haul it away.Both hope the reindeer will be returned. 2359

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - A Coronado police officer and four teens were injured after a suspected drunk driver crashed into a parked car Friday.Coronado Police received a report of a possible drunk driver at about 9:30 p.m. An officer in the area located the vehicle on Third Street and attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver, however, made an abrupt turn onto E Ave. and crashed into a parked vehicle, police said.Following the crash, several juveniles ran from the vehicle. The responding officer chased after the teenagers and found two nearby. They were brought to a nearby hospital for injuries sustained in the crash.Two more passengers were found hiding near 4th St. and Alameda Blvd. They were also taken to a nearby hospital for injuries received in the crash, police said.Coronado Police said an officer was also injured responding to the incident.Police said several containers of beer, hard alcohol, and spray paint were found inside the vehicle. 984
