Attorney General William Barr took aim at his own Justice Department on Wednesday, criticizing prosecutors for behaving as “headhunters” in their pursuit of prominent targets and politically charged cases.The comments at a speech at Hillsdale College in Michigan amount to a striking and unusual rebuke of the thousands of prosecutors who do the daily work of assembling criminal cases across the country.Barr described the prosecutors as part of the “permanent bureaucracy” and said they were in need of supervision from “detached,” politically appointed leaders who are accountable to the president and Congress.“The men and women who have ultimate authority in the Justice Department are thus the ones on whom our elected officials have conferred that responsibility — by presidential appointment and Senate confirmation,” Barr said, according to his prepared remarks. “That blessing by the two political branches of government gives these officials democratic legitimacy that career officials simply do not possess.”As Attorney General, Barr has been aggressive in pursuing certain categories of prosecution himself, including seeking federal charges against those arrested in protests following the death of George Floyd. In fact, later on Wednesday, Barr said wants prosecutors to be aggressive in charging demonstrators who cause violence.So far, more than 300 people have been charged with federal crimes in the protests that erupted following the death of George Floyd.An Associated Press analysis shows that many are accused of serious crimes like hurling Molotov cocktails, burning police cars and seriously injuring law enforcement. Others are not accused of serious crimes, prompting criticism that the effort is a politically motivated effort to stymie demonstrations. 1790

At least one airline is starting to pull back on their cleaning regimen. Southwest crews are limiting their between-flight cleanings and leaving most of the passenger areas for the overnight cleaning crew, according to reports.Following the coronavirus outbreak in March and subsequent travel bans, airlines touted their stepped-up cleaning protocols as passengers returned.Starting in August, Southwest is focusing on lavatories and tray tables between flights, leaving seat belts, arm rests and other areas for the overnight cleaning crew, Southwest representative Ro Hawthorne told the Dallas Morning News."Since flight schedules have increased, other areas of the aircraft will be disinfected during our overnight cleaning process, when Southwest Teams spend six to seven hours per aircraft cleaning all interior surfaces," Hawthorne said in a statement.“As always, Southwest will monitor customer and employee feedback as we adapt to the new normal in air travel, while ensuring we keep safety as our top priority,” the statement continued.In March, Southwest announced their cleaning program included "interior windows and shades, every seat belt buckle, passenger service units (including the touch buttons that control reading lights and vents that direct personal air), as well as seat surfaces, tray tables, armrests, etc."The change to cleaning protocol will reduce the time an aircraft spends on the ground between flights, the airline told flight attendants in a memo obtained by CNN. 1505

ASSISI, Italy (AP) — A 15-year-old Italian computer whiz who died of leukemia in 2006 has moved a step closer to possible sainthood with his beatification in the town of Assisi. Carlo Acutis is the youngest contemporary person to be beatified. He follows two Portuguese shepherd children living in the early 1900s who were proclaimed Catholic saints in 2017. Already touted as the “patron saint of the internet,” Acutis created a website to catalog miracles and took care of websites for Catholic organizations. While still in elementary school, Acutis taught himself to code using a university computer science textbook, and then how to edit videos and create animation. The cardinal who beatified him said he used the internet “in service of the Gospel.” 764

Bad news: There is a small chance an asteroid will collide with Earth. The good news: Mankind has more than 115 years to prepare for it. According to a Washington Post report, NASA is preparing for possible tactics to deflect the asteroid Bennu, which will approach Earth Sept. 21, 2135. As of today, NASA rates Bennu's chance of striking Earth at one-in-2,700.The asteroid is roughly 1,600 feet in diameter, and would not be an Earth-ending event if it struck. But that doesn't mean it couldn't cause damage, especially if it struck near a populated area. Bennu is likely dozens of times larger than the object that struck near Chelyabinsk, Russia in 2013, causing hundreds of injuries, and thousands of broken windows. The event caused nearly million in damage to roughly 7,000 buildings. The 2013 event shows that even small objects are capable of causing massive damage. In 2016, NASA launched OSIRIS-REx, which will land on the asteroid and bring back samples. The information gathered could help NASA decide what steps it would take to deflect the asteroid. According to the Washington Post, NASA is working on a plan called the Hypervelocity Asteroid Mitigation Mission for Emergency Response, or HAMMER. NASA's HAMMER plan could involve using a nine-ton bulk impactor to push Bennu out of Earth's path. Another idea would be straight out of the movie "Armageddon," using a nuclear-type device to move the asteroid. A NASA engineer involved in the study told the Washington Post all of these ideas are theoretical. “We’re doing these design studies to prepare ourselves, so if we do find a threatening object, we’re better prepared to deal with it,” Brent W. As we shop online more this holiday season, pest control experts are also expecting more calls.That's because those cardboard packages left out in front of homes are basically an invitation for bugs and rats to come inside.“They're looking for shelter, just like we are. They're cold if they're outside, so a lot of times, they have that fall migration, or early winter migration of rodents to our door, seeking heat and shelter,” said Dr. Brittany Campbell, staff entomologist at the National Pest Management Association.Some of those pests include American and German cockroaches, silverfish and even booklice. Unlike body lice, booklice are mostly harmless and more of a nuisance.During this time, it's important that you open up your packages outside. You'll want to do a quick inspection of the exterior of the box.“So, you'll look for gnaw marks, any type of droppings on the boxes, and then before you bring them in, go ahead and open that cardboard box,” said Campbell.Once you open up the box, shake out all the items inside and look for fecal droppings, urine marks, egg casings, and any other type of clues that show there were insects inside.After inspecting the box, it's fine to still use it to wrap your gifts, but make sure to dispose of it as soon as possible after Christmas.
