SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A lot of people will do just about anything to avoid the dentist.Needles, drilling, and pain can cause all kinds of anxiety, but a local dentist is using a new laser that he says could transform dentistry.Sara Scarafone 15, is a patient at Dr. Alex Corondoni’s office in San Carlos. “Put the sunglasses on you, and we'll get started,” Corondoni said.But instead of a drill, Corondoni is using a laser. “It's hitting that tooth at 1800 pulses a second. It's almost like if you were jack hammering something,” he said.It's called Solea.  The laser vaporizes the enamel, allowing dentists to fill cavities painlessly. Corondoni has been practicing for 28 years and says it's unlike anything he's ever seen.“I've done some big, big, big fillings, that I was like, ‘You're not feeling this?!’” And no drilling means no Novocain. “I was excited to hear that there wasn't any needles involved,” Scarafone said.“My average patients are in their 60s and 70s, so I have a lot of medications, so if they have arrhythmias or heart problems, I'm not having to give them any anesthetic.It's huge,” Corondoni said. He says this new procedure turns what normally takes an hour into less than 10 minutes. “It just felt like a lot of air, and a little bit of water,” Scarafone said.The device is made by Boston-based Convergent Delta and claims to be revolutionary-- reducing recovery time.“You're not numb. You can go to work. There's no excuses,” Corondoni said. “I can do all the different parts of the mouth at one time.”Even normally complex procedures on soft tissue like gums become more routine. “I would have had to cut it, suture it, wait a couple weeks, and now it's just done and they come back in 4 or 5 days and it's healed. It's amazing!”A nearby touch screen lets dentists adjust the speed and precision of the laser. Ultimately, Corondoni says it's not just improving his patient's experiences, but his practice and reputation.“Sometimes, I'd have to sedate patients to have them come in here, just to get a needle.” Now, he no longer feels like the enemy. “I'm a good guy now. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In response to safety concerns, a growing number of downtown San Diego public restrooms are being staffed with armed security guards.The city of San Diego has added armed guards to secure the public restrooms outside the San Diego Civic Theatre.The 6-month contract began in April and costs 0,000.00. It’s the latest downtown public restroom location to be staffed with armed security.Over the winter, armed security guards started being stationed at two other downtown public restroom locations, 13th St. and G St., and Park Blvd. and 11th Ave.RELATED: City may seek armed guards at Central Library, other parksThe Civic Theater public restrooms have a history of safety issues and a heavy transient population. San Diego police confirm that last fall, a city employee was reportedly beaten by a man who was trying to bring a shopping cart into one of the stalls.Patrons tell 10News that people are known to use drugs and sleep inside the restrooms. “Some of [the people] have bad tempers so you have to have the means to protect yourself,” says Allstate security guard Herbert Bridges.He’s one of the new guards outside the Civic Theatre, armed with a 9mm handgun. He says he and his coworkers are also allowed to carry batons and pepper spray.“We will never use weapons unless it’s absolutely necessary," he adds.In January, 10News’ Jon Horn broke the story that the city was looking at the possibility putting armed security guards inside various city buildings with heavy transient populations, like the Downtown Library.The city confirms it’s still several months until that could become a reality. 1649

SAN DIEGO, California — With recreational marijuana now legal in California, doctors are warning parents to be extra vigilant when checking their kids' candy on Halloween. They worry that the kids may confuse edibles for candy."There's going to be candy all over the house," says Dr. James Elia from Sharp Grossmont Hospital. "If there are edibles that are in the household and are forgotten to put away, kids may be able to get into them as well."State law allows edibles but has strict guidelines for how much THC can be in them. A package can't contain more than 100 milligrams, and each piece can't have more than 10.Marijuana vendors say new rules also make it harder for the edibles to be confused for candy."You cannot use the word candy and animals cannot be in the shape of certain animals and images that might be attractive to children," says Kyle Dukes from Torrey Holistics. He also noted that state law doesn't allow the edibles to be in any shape the State Bureau of Cannabis Control deems "attractive to children." Specifically, they can't be shaped like fruit, animals or lollipops.Packaging for marijuana-infused food must also be child resistant and clearly labeled.Dr. Elia recommends keeping edibles locked away, similar to the way people treat medicine they don't want kids to get. He says the side effects of THC on children could be devastating."They could experience alteration of mental status, sometimes hallucinations, severe anxiety, severe paranoia," he says. "With children, it's also noted shortness of breath."Elia also says parents should be extra vigilant when checking their kids' trick-or-treat candy, to make sure an edible didn't wind up in their collection."We all have to be concerned about this," he says. San Diego (KGTV)- It’s crunch time for California Republican candidates, wanting the official endorsement from their party. Their last minute pitches and speeches are happening this weekend at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina. Republican candidates, staff, and volunteers say they are ready to shake things up in Sacramento. “I will be the loyal opposition to the wayward liberals of the Legislature,” Lt. Governor candidate, Cole Harris said, at the candidate forum. “Jerry Brown has certainly left a mark in our state over the years,” Judge Steven Bailey said. The State Attorney General said Brown has not been the leader they had hoped for."We've had eight years of Jerry Brown,” Gubernatorial candidate, John Cox said. “Poverty has soared, the cost of living has soared, taxes have soared, so we're excited for the chance to change all of that."Republican Gubernatorial  candidates, John Cox of Rancho Santa Fe, and Travis Allen of Huntington Beach have until Sunday to pitch to the nearly 1,000 member GOP delegation in San Diego this weekend, to get the prized official party endorsement.They only get that if they win 60% of the votes cast at the convention tomorrow. With the endorsement, both men say the will be ready to fight head-on against Democratic frontrunner, Gavin Newsom. And if elected as Governor, both promised to rid both the controversial Gas tax increase the State's Sanctuary law. "These are the issues that affect every single Californian, regardless of political party,” Gubernatorial candidate, Travis Allen said. Allen said he has supported President Trump from the beginning.  While Cox did not vote for Trump in 2016, he eventually pledged his support of the President.
