This year, the number of women in charge of Fortune 500 companies hit a new a record, but out of the 37 women on that list, none of them are Latina.Leaders around the country are working to change that.Tanya Ramos is the CEO at Pencils of Promise, a group working to help 100,000 children around the world receive an education.Ramos says that because we don't see many Latinas in leadership roles, it's important to seek out mentors.“I’ve had the great fortune of having remarkable mentors throughout my career and I deem my success based on how many others, others like me, other Latinas, that I’m also able to bring up through the ranks and make room at the table for,” said Ramos.Ramos recognizes it could be intimidating to ask someone to be a mentor, but she says it's unlikely someone will say no.“If you encounter someone that you really believe could provide you with valuable advice, or if they can help you think through challenges, seek them out and ask if they would be willing to chat over the phone, or grab a coffee, when it's safe to do that of course,” said Ramos.A survey by Catalyst, a nonprofit that supports creating workplaces for women, found more than 40% of Latinas don't have a mentor. This holiday travel season will look a lot different because of the pandemic. Some people can’t imagine booking a trip. Others are checking flights, pricing, or calling a travel agent.Kathy Facione of Rochester Hills loves to travel.She’s been exploring the globe in recent years – visiting Italy, Ireland, and Iceland – to name a few.Facione has not flown since February due to the pandemic, but she is planning a fall trip to Wyoming.“I’ll have a half-day in Grand Teton, all day in Yellowstone, I have a chuckwagon dinner scheduled one night, and a horseback sunset trip planned another night,” she said explaining her itinerary.I had to ask her, “Have you had anybody say, ‘You’re flying during a pandemic?! What?!’“Yeah, yeah. A few people think I’m crazy. They think it’s too early,” she replied with a smile.But Facione wears her mask consistently and follows health and safety guidelines. Now she’s ready to explore.BOOK NOW? OR LATER?But what do people need to know if they’re considering booking travel over the holidays this year with coronavirus still a concern around the world?I asked Jill Jones for some advice.Jones is a Travel Concierge with Cadillac Travel in Southfield, and she’s been keeping track of all the COVID-19 travel advisories and how the industry is responding.“You need to understand completely what you’re buying. Like, what is your ability to change this? What’s your ability to get it refunded? What is the window for that? So that, all, you need to understand all of that before you put your money down,” Jones said.Of all the airlines, Jones said she thought Delta has been doing the best job with cancellation policies, cleaning protocols, mask mandates, and social distancing.Delta just announced it is extending its policy of blocking middle seats and limiting the number of customers on every flight through January 6 of 2021 (Delta will make the middle seat available for parties of 3 or more traveling together).Jones said Delta, like other airlines, has also been fairly flexible during this health crisis.If you buy a ticket right now with Delta, Jones explained that you can change that without the airline’s normal 0 change fee or get a voucher that’s good for almost two years.But if you’re considering booking travel for the holidays this year, Jones advises you not to wait.“If you wait until November to decide to make your December reservations, you’re probably not going to get what you want, and you’ll pay a lot more than you need to. But people are stuck in [that mindset] – ‘Do I really want to do this?’” Jones explained.She said if people are hoping for some big “COVID fire sale” of sorts, that’s not going to happen because airlines – like Delta – are blocking 30-percent of their inventory, and eventually, prices will go up.BEACH VACATIONS?As for warm getaways this winter, Jones said places like Mexico, Aruba, Jamaica, and St. Lucia are open – for now – but some may require a negative COVID-19 test.Bottom line, Jill Jones said travelers need to understand what they’re buying -- including details about the cancellation or change policies.“So, I encourage all my clients to book in a format that they can either change it right up until the day before or they can get a full refund if they just decide not to go,” Jones explained.Jones said it’s also very important for people to monitor each tourist area’s coronavirus situation and entry requirements.“The airlines are not deciding the rules. It’s the governments of these countries that are deciding the rules. So, you can well get on a plane and not have what you need to get off that plane because it wasn’t up to the airline to tell you that,” said Jones.The U.S. Virgin Islands just closed to leisure travelers on Aug. 19 for at least one month to help contain the spread of the virus.Hawaii will not re-open to tourists until at least October first due to a surge in positive cases there.And when it does re-open, Hawaii may still require a 14-day quarantine – meaning tourists must stay at their hotel or rental lodgings for two weeks before venturing beyond those properties.As for Kathy Facione, she is already thinking about booking a getaway in December.“I’d like to take another trip around Christmas time just to get away and out of the cold -- maybe do something like a spa or something like that,” Facione saidSo, the Red Rocks of Sedona may be calling for Kathy despite the coronavirus.This story was first reported by Alicia Smith at WXYZ in Detroit, Michigan. 4507

TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) — Migrants in a caravan of Central Americans scrambled Wednesday to reach the U.S. border, arriving by the hundreds in Tijuana, while U.S. authorities across the border were readying razor wire security barriers.Mexican officials in Tijuana were struggling to deal with a group of 357 migrants who arrived aboard nine buses Tuesday and another group of 398 that arrived Wednesday."Mexico has been excellent; we have no complaint about Mexico. The United States remains to be seen," said Josue Vargas, a migrant from Honduras who finally pulled into Tijuana Wednesday after more than a month on the road.U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, meanwhile, went to visit U.S. troops posted to the border in south Texas and said the deployment provides good training for war. President Donald Trump has said the caravan of migrants amounts to an "invasion."RELATED: Video shows people climbing on top of fence at Border Field State ParkThat didn't deter arriving groups of Central Americans from going to a stretch of border fence in Tijuana to celebrate.On Tuesday, a couple of dozen migrants scaled the steel border fence to celebrate their arrival, chanting "Yes, we could!" and one man dropped over to the U.S. side briefly as border agents watched from a distance. He ran quickly back to the fence.Tijuana's head of migrant services, Cesar Palencia Chavez, said authorities offered to take the migrants to shelters immediately, but they initially refused."They wanted to stay together in a single shelter," Palencia Chavez said, "but at this time that's not possible" because shelters are designed for smaller groups and generally offer separate facilities for men, women and families.But he said that after their visit to the border, most were taken to shelters in groups of 30 or 40.With a total of three caravans moving through Mexico including 7,000 to 10,000 migrants in all, questions arose as to how Tijuana would deal with such a huge influx, especially given U.S. moves to tighten border security and make it harder to claim asylum.On Wednesday, buses and trucks carried some migrants into the state of Sinaloa along the Gulf of California and further northward into the border state of Sonora.The bulk of the main caravan appeared to be about 1,100 miles (1,800 kilometers) from the border, but was moving hundreds of miles per day.The Rev. Miguel Angel Soto, director of the Casa de Migrante — House of the Migrant — in the Sinaloa capital of Culiacan, said about 2,000 migrants had arrived in that area. He said the state government, the Roman Catholic Church and city officials in Escuinapa, Sinaloa, were helping the migrants.The priest also said the church had been able to get "good people" to provide buses for moving migrants northward. He said so far 24 buses had left Escuinapa on an eight-drive to Navojoa in Sonora state. Referring to the first caravan nearing the end of the journey, Pineda said "if they could do it, there is no reason why we can't."It is unclear whether the two caravans would merge or when they would set out on the road north.Many say they are fleeing poverty, gang violence and political instability in the Central American countries of Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua.Mexico has offered refuge, asylum or work visas, and its government said Monday that 2,697 temporary visas had been issued to individuals and families to cover them during the 45-day application process for more permanent status. Some 533 migrants had requested a voluntary return to their countries, the government reported.The U.S. government said it was starting work Tuesday to "harden" the border crossing from Tijuana ahead of the caravans.Customs and Border Protection announced it was closing four lanes at the busy San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry in San Diego, California, so it could install infrastructure.That still leaves a substantial path for the tens of thousands of people who cross daily: Twenty-three lanes remain open at San Ysidro and 12 at Otay Mesa.San Ysidro is the border's busiest crossing, with about 110,000 people entering the U.S. every day. (KGTV) — Two credible shark sightings have been reported at Torrey Pines State Beach this weekend, according to officials.Following the shark sightings, individuals say they were "bumped" by a shark. No injuries were reported. To alert beach-goers, signs have been posted to alert visitors of the recent sightings.RELATED: 12-foot white shark spotted off shore of Coronado Beach"Advisory warnings are informative in nature only. If you ever see a shark, notify a lifeguard. The frequency of sightings in combo with the size, location, and behavior, are how advisories are issued," officials advised.The sightings comes five days after a 12-foot-long shark was reported off the shore of Coronado Beach. According to a message posted on Facebook by police, the shark was spotted just off the shore of in the North Beach area just before 2 p.m. on May 26. 881
