YINCHUAN, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Millions of Chinese Muslims across the country celebrated the tradition of Corban on Tuesday and Wednesday.In northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, 76-year-old Liu Wenming attended a religious ceremony at the Nanguan Mosque in the regional capital, Yinchuan, Wednesday morning, along with some 10,000 Muslims."My son, daughter and grandchildren will come from different parts of Ningxia to have a family lunch with me. Then we will visit other relatives and friends," said Liu.In Qinghai Province, also in the northwest, many Muslims began to gather at the Dongguan Mosque in the provincial capital Xining before 8 a.m. Tuesday. By 9 a.m., roads outside the mosque were packed with pious Muslims. Muslims attend a celebration feast held in a street in Nanning, capital of southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, to mark Corban Festival, also known as Eid al-adha, Nov. 17, 2010. Chinese muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha, which falls on the tenth day of the twelfth month on the Islamic calendar, to mark the end of the haj and commemorate Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail on God's command.Ten ethnic groups in China, including Hui, Uygur, Dongxiang and Bao'an, celebrate the annual festival -- but they celebrate it on different days. Some celebrated it on Tuesday while others celebrated it Wednesday. The timing depends on each ethic group's tradition.The Corban Festival, also known as Id al-Gurban, is a major Islamic festival that is meant to demonstrate believers' faith and obedience to Allah. People slaughter livestock and divide the animal into three parts.One part is to be eaten by the family. Another part is for relatives and friends. The third part is for charity.Migrant workers from northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region returned home this month in time for the festival.Eighty-seven migrant workers from Shule County returned home in early November to join their families in celebrating the joyous occasion.Additionally, the regional government organized a reception on Tuesday afternoon, during which Zhang Chunxian, secretary of the regional committee of the Communist Party of China, met representatives from all walks of life.At the end of his speech, Zhang greeted the Muslims while speaking in the Uygur language, which received warm applause.China has more than 20 million Muslims. BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- China Thursday called on parties involved in the Cote d'Ivoire crisis to solve disputes and differences through dialogue."We appreciate the positive efforts of the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to promote a peaceful settlement of the Cote d'Ivoire crisis," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei at a regular press briefing.Cote d'Ivoire has been in political crisis after both incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo and his rival Alassane Ouattara claimed victory in the presidential run-off of Nov. 28.The AU and the ECOWAS have sent a joint five-member high-level delegation to the Cote d'Ivoire to seek a peaceful resolution to the country's political crisis.Hong said peacefully settling the crisis is in the common interests of west African countries. He urged the parties involved in the crisis "to settle differences, achieve political reconciliation, and maintain national peace and stability through consultation."

BEIJING, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- During the 11th Five-Year Plan period (2006-2010), China spent 3.26 trillion yuan on social security, an annual increase of 17.6 percent, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) told Xinhua Friday.Wang Jun, vice minister of the MOF, said in the 2006-2010 period, the social security expenditure from the central government stood at 1.4 trillion yuan (210.19 billion U.S. dollars), which was 2.1 times the expenditure in the previous five years.As the improvement of civil welfare is a crucial component of the harmonious society China is pursuing, financial authorities at all levels should continue to raise investments in social security when making the 2011 fiscal budget and plans for the 12th Five-Year Plan starting from 2011, Wang said.

BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- With the New Year and China's Spring Festival approaching, China will improve efforts to stabilize prices and ensure abundant supply of essential commodities, according to an official circular issued Sunday.Cracking down on price speculation and related market manipulation should be high on agenda of governments at all levels, according to the circular issued jointly by the General Offices of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the State Council, or China's Cabinet.The circular also urged for improved supervision on the food and medicine market and demanded work concerning water, power, oil, gas and heating supplies to be handled well.It called on related departments to distribute subsidies for low-income groups in a timely way and make arrangements to help people, especially those in disasters-hit areas, to get through the winter with enough supply of necessities.Party and governmental organs should abstain from extravagance and embezzlement of public fund must be strictly prohibited, it said, ordering discipline inspection authorities, auditing agencies and finance departments to enhance supervision.According to the circular, special inspection campaigns will be launched in sectors, including mining, transportation, construction, and fireworks manufacturing, to tighten safety measures and prevent accidents.Stressing security in passenger transportation, the circular said cargo overloading, using fatigued operators or running unlicensed transportation operations are prohibited.It further called for efforts to safeguard social order and to combat violent and mafia-style crimes, property embezzlement and economic crimes.
