JERUSALEM, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Israeli President Shimon Peres on Sunday met here with Zhang Gaoli, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Party chief of China's Tianjin municipality. BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China has kept a "generally stable" coal mine safety record in the first nine months of 2010, as the death toll caused by accidents remained almost flat over the same period last year, Zhao Tiechui, head of the State Administration of Coal Mine Safety (SACMS), said here Monday.From January to September, the nation's coal output reached 2.44 billion tonnes, up 17.2 percent, but accidents dropped 13.2 percent year on year, Zhao said.He did not give any actual numbers of coal mine accidents or deaths caused during period, but said the death ratio per million tons of coal output stood at 0.783 percent, down 13.9 percent over the same period last year.According to the SACMS's last publicized figures, deaths from coal mine accidents totaled 3,215 in China in 2008. In the January-September period of 2009, China recorded 591 fewer deaths from coal mine accidents, down by 23.8 percent from the 2008 level.Gas explosions, floods and fires inside coal mines were frequent occurrences during the first nine months, posing severe safety challenges to China's coal mine production, Zhao said.In a separate report by the State Administration of Work Safety in July this year, workplace accidents left 33,876 people dead in China during the first half of the year.

BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's disaster relief authorities on Monday issued a national early disaster warning to gear up for super typhoon Megi, which is expected to batter China's southern coastal areas.The Ministry of Civil Affairs and the State Disaster Relief Commission, which agreed to activate the response, issued urgent notices to the civil affairs departments in the regions along the southern coast -- Hainan,Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian -- to prepare for relief operations.Possibly the strongest typhoon to hit China this year, Megi, which means "catfish" in Korean, is expected to reach the eastern South China Sea around Tuesday midnight, bringing strong winds and rain to the four regions along the coast.The notices ordered local civil affairs departments to closely monitor the typhoon, take precautionary measures against possible geological disasters and flooding in cities, and ensure that people in vulnerable areas are evacuated on time.The 13th typhoon of the year, Megi is packing winds of up to 260 km per hour, making it the strongest typhoon to appear in the northwest Pacific since 1990 and the strongest typhoon of the year worldwide, according to China's National Meteorological Center.

KHARTOUM, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Ahmed Karti said on Friday his visit to China carried reassurances and confirmations to the Chinese side his government keenness to enhance cooperation with China even after a referendum to be held in southern Sudan."We have delivered a message on our keenness on continuation in enhancing the cooperation with China and expanding its investments in the country, particularly in north Sudan," Karti told reporters at Khartoum airport today upon return from a tour that included China and Egypt."China is an important country for Sudan and we are keen to fully coordinate with it, particularly with regard to current international issues. We are expecting China to play an important role in the international meeting on Sudan, scheduled for September 24, 2010," he added.He further stressed that Sudan was looking forward to enhancing ties with China, saying that "I have held consultations with the Chinese leadership on many issues and we have agreed on coordination during the forthcoming meetings of the United Nations General Assembly."The Sudanese minister described his visit to China as "one of the best official visits," adding that "we have managed to convey our viewpoint on many issues that has received complete response on the part of the Chinese leadership."On January 9, 2011, the southern Sudanese are expected to vote in a referendum on self-determination for southern Sudan to opt between unity or separation according to the provisions of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), inked between north and south Sudan in 2005, and the Sudanese Constitution.The referendum would be considered legal if fifty eight percent of the registered voters participated in the referendum, and if the quorum was incomplete, there would be re-voting with the same terms in 60 days of the announcement of the referendum result.The result of the referendum would be decided by a simple majority of fifty percent plus one of the votes.

BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- China must improve the quality, accuracy and credibility of statistics to better serve the country's social and economic development, said Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang in a letter addressed to a ceremony on Wednesday in Shanghai marking the first World Statistics Day.A relatively standardized modern statistics system that conforms to China's national conditions and international standards have basically taken shape in China, according to the letter received by Xinhua on Wednesday.Li said that as China will soon enter into the 12th five-year development period (2011-2015), it must push forward the development and reform of statistics gathering to provide accurate and comprehensive information in a timely way.Li also said the Chinese government will continue to strengthen international exchanges and cooperation in the realm of statistics.The World Statistics Day, initiated by the United Nations, aims to promote knowledge about statistics among the public.
