Rep. Louise M. Slaughter, the first female chair of the House Rules Committee and one of the longest-serving Democrats in Congress, died Friday at age 88, her office announced. The dean of the New York congressional delegation had fallen near her D.C. home last week, suffered an injury, and had been hospitalized at George Washington University Hospital.A major fixture in Democratic politics, she was serving her 16th term in Congress.House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said Friday in a statement that she was "heartbroken by the passing of the congresswoman.""In her lifetime of public service and unwavering commitment to working families, Congresswoman Slaughter embodied the very best of the American spirit and ideals. With her passing, the Congressional community has lost a beloved leader and a cherished friend," Pelosi said. "Louise was a trailblazer. ... Her strong example inspired countless young women to know their power, and seek their rightful place at the head of the decision-making table."Slaughter, a microbiologist, won a seat in Congress in 1986 and was known for securing infrastructure money for her district as well as fighting for the troops. Slaughter spent years trying to set safety standards for military body armor after a report revealed that many casualties in the Iraq War had been born of the fact that the protective armor troops were wearing was inadequate.Slaughter was born in Kentucky, and although she relocated with her family to upstate New York, she never lost her trademark southern twang. As the top Democrat on the committee that set terms of House floor debate, she often sparred with her GOP colleagues about policy, often late into the night. But Republicans on the panel respected her and regarded her as a fierce protector of her party's agenda."Louise was a fearless leader, deeply committed to her constituents, and a dear friend," Republican Pete Sessions, the Rules Committee chairman, said in a statement "I have had the immense privilege of working side by side with her for the past 20 years. I will always cherish our friendship, comradery, and of course, her rhubarb pie. Although we sat on different sides of the aisle, I have always considered her a partner and have the utmost respect for her."Slaughter's chief of staff Liam Fitzsimmons released a statement Friday morning on his boss's death."To have met Louise Slaughter is to have known a force of nature," he said. "She was a relentless advocate for Western New York whose visionary leadership brought infrastructure upgrades, technology and research investments, and two federal manufacturing institutes to Rochester that will transform the local economy for generations to come."He added, "As the first chairwoman of the House Rules Committee, Louise blazed a path that many women continue to follow. It is difficult to find a segment of society that Louise didn't help shape over the course of more than 30 years in Congress, from health care to genetic nondiscrimination to historic ethics reforms."In recent years, Slaughter had some health issues, and missed some votes and meetings, but after one absence around the efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act last year, the senior Democrat returned for the vote, which was expected to be very close, telling CNN, "I wasn't going to miss this one." She noted she was proud to be a part of passing the Democrats' signature health care law in 2009.She was genuinely curious and often stopped Capitol Hill reporters in the hallway to check on what stories they were working on, and offer her own two cents.According to her office, "in 2009, she secured the recall and replacement of 16,000 pieces of unsafe body armor from the front lines. Her effort led to improved armor testing protocols and ended the practice of outsourcing testing to private companies."She also was the author of other pieces of landmark pieces of legislation in Congress, including one that barred members of Congress from insider trading, and was the co-author of the Violence Against Women Act. 4052

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Associated Press has declared President Donald Trump the winner in North Carolina, though Joe Biden is still projected to win the presidency. The AP concluded Friday that there were not enough outstanding ballots remaining to be counted in the state that would allow Joe Biden to overtake Trump’s lead of 73,697 votes.Friday was the deadline for counties in North Carolina to certify their results. Following updates from most counties in the state, Trump leads Biden by 1.3 percentage points.Trump campaigned aggressively in North Carolina with in-person rallies at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, including gatherings in Fayetteville, Winston-Salem and Greenville in the weeks before the election. He was scheduled to hold the Republican National Convention in the state but pulled out after a fight with the state’s Democratic governor over coronavirus restrictions. It was moved to Jacksonville, Florida, before being largely canceled all together.Trump’s win in the Tar Heel State puts the president at 232 electoral votes and Joe Biden remains at 290 votes.Biden is still projected to win the presidential election, since he has surpassed the 270-vote threshold needed to claim victory. The only state the AP has yet to call is Georgia, which is conducting a recount because neither Biden or Trump leads by more than .5 percentage points. Results show that Biden leads Trump in the Peach State by more than 14,100 votes. 1460

President Donald Trump's son Donald Trump Jr.'s wife Vanessa Trump has filed for an uncontested divorce. The couple first married in 2005 and have five kids together. "After 12 years of marriage, we have decided to go our separate ways," a joint statement from the Trumps said. "We will always have tremendous respect for each other and our families. We have five beautiful children together and they remain our top priority. We ask for your privacy during this time."The New York Post's Page Six was first to report on the divorce. According to Page Six's sources, Trump Jr.'s hectic travel schedule running The Trump Organization has worn on the couple. “Don Jr. has been busy traveling, which has contributed to their problems. Vanessa is a devoted mother, but she is increasingly lonely and alone in the house with the children," a Page Six source said. In February, an envelope that contained a white powder was sent to Trump Jr. and his wife. The threatening envelope turned out to be a hoax.  1047

President Donald Trump tweeted early Friday morning he and first lady Melania Trump have tested positive for the coronavirus. "Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19," Trump tweeted. "We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!"The president confirmed late Thursday that Hope Hicks, a senior White House staffer who serves as counselor to the president, was infected with the coronavirus."The White House medical team and I will maintain a vigilant watch and appreciate the support provided by some of our country’s greatest medical professionals and institutions," Dr. Sean Conley, physician to the president, said. "Rest assured, I expect the President to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering and I will keep you updated on any future developments."While Conley is optimistic for the president's recovery, according to CDC guidance, given Trump's weight and age, he is at an enhanced risk of complications from the coronavirus. "Hope Hicks, who has been working so hard without even taking a small break, has just tested positive for Covid 19. Terrible! The First Lady and I are waiting for our test results. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process!" Trump tweeted Thursday evening. Her infection was first reported by ABC News and Bloomberg.Hicks was on board Air Force One during Trump’s trip to Minnesota yesterday, and to Cleveland on Tuesday. Photos taken by the Associated Press on Wednesday show Hicks was in close proximity of several other senior staffers, including Jared Kushner, Stephen Miller and Dan Scavino. ABC News reported that Hicks was on board the presidential helicopter Marine One with the president on Wednesday. None of the staffers were seen wearing a mask entering Marine One. Earlier this week, Trump mocked his opponent Joe Biden in the presidential debate for his use of a mask."Tonight as an example, everybody had a test and you've had social distancing and all of the things that you have to," Trump said on Tuesday. "But I wear a mask when needed. I wear masks. I don't wear masks like him. Every time you see him he has a mask. He could be speaking 200 feet away and he shows up with the biggest mask I've ever seen."Trump said on Fox News late Thursday evening that he is awaiting test results to find out if he has the virus."I'll get my test back either tonight or first thing tomorrow morning," Trump told Fox News.ABC News said that Hicks was among a “tight group of advisers” to contract the coronavirus.“The President takes the health and safety of himself and everyone who works in support of him and the American people very seriously,” White House spokesperson Judd Deere said in a statement on Thursday. “White House Operations collaborates with the Physician to the President and the White House Military Office to ensure all plans and procedures incorporate current CDC guidance and best practices for limiting COVID-19 exposure to the greatest extent possible both on complex and when the President is traveling."Despite Hicks' diagnosis, Trump remained out of the White House on Thursday. The CDC states that those who have been in close contact with someone who has the coronavirus should quarantine for 14 days. Trump was originally going to meet with supporters on Friday in Washington before heading to Florida for a Make America Great Rally. Those events have been canceled, according to the White House. It's unclear how long President and first lady Trump will quarantine. First lady Melania Trump also tweeted about her diagnosis."As too many Americans have done this year, @POTUS & I are quarantining at home after testing positive for COVID-19," the first lady said early Friday morning. "We are feeling good & I have postponed all upcoming engagements. Please be sure you are staying safe & we will all get through this together." 3926

President-elect Joe Biden is heading to Georgia to campaign for the Democratic candidates in the state's two critical U.S. Senate runoffs.Biden says he'll travel to Atlanta on Tuesday to support Jon Ossoff, the Rev. Raphael Warnock and the Democratic ticket in the Jan. 5 runoffs, which will determine which party controls the Senate at the outset of his presidency.Ossoff faces Republican Sen. David Perdue. Warnock faces GOP Sen. Kelly Loeffler.Republicans need one seat for a Senate majority. Democrats need both to make Vice President-elect Kamala Harris the tie-breaking vote.President Donald Trump used a weekend rally in Valdosta, Georgia, to push supporters to turn out for Perdue and Loeffler.Georgia has long been a Republican stronghold but may be on the road to swing state status, particularly after Biden became the first Democratic presidential candidate since Bill Clinton in 1992 to carry the state. 924
