NANJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- A court in east China's Jiangsu Province sentenced a man to death and another to life in prison Friday for illegally raising up to 4 billion yuan (606 million U.S. dollars) in a fraudulent investment scheme.Another 11 suspects were given jail terms ranging from two-and-a-half to 10 years for collusion in the fraud, which caused losses of 650 million yuan (98 million dollars) to 14,822 investors, the Intermediate People's Court in the provincial capital, Nanjing, said in a statement.According to the statement, Sun Haiyu and Hu Zhen jointly set up a company, Nanjing Runzai Biology Co., Ltd. in January 2004 and began soliciting investments from the public in the name of planting glossy ganoderma, or reishi mushrooms, which are widely used in traditional Chinese medicine.The judge said the company exaggerated its profits in planting glossy ganoderma and fraudulently claimed that the investment was risk free.The duo, together with 11 accomplices, raised more than 4 billion yuan from April 2004 to July 2008.Sun was sentenced to death for the crime of illegal fund-raising by fraudulent means, while Hu was sentenced to life imprisonment.

BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese ministries and local governments have coordinated efforts to combat price hikes by increasing grain supplies, clamping down on speculation and offering subsidies, as the central government has growing concerns about rising inflation.In a move to head off price hikes, the State Administration of Grain will increase sales of grain supplies to meet the public's needs and stabilize market prices, the agency said in a statement posted on its website Friday.Additionally, it will sell a set amount of cooking vegetable oil and soybeans from government reserves beginning next week, in addition to the weekly sales of wheat, rice and corn that has already begun, the statement said.The authority will also send groups of staff to major grain production regions to inspect and guide purchases of autumn grain and regulate business practices, it added.The statement said the move was designed to protect farmers' interests and maintain moderate prices in the grain market.Further, the Ministry of Agriculture announced Friday that it will work to add 8 million mu (0.53 million hectares) of planting areas for vegetables and 2 million mu for potatoes to stabilize agricultural production and increase vegetable supplies during the winter.Also, Zhou Bohua, head of the State Administration of Industry and Commerce, said the administration will "seriously" work to prevent the hoarding of agricultural products, forcing up prices and other speculative practices.These measures echoed the central government's call to tame price rises.China's State Council, or the Cabinet, on Wednesday announced price control guidelines to reassure consumers facing rising inflation.The efforts mainly included imposing temporary price controls on important daily necessities and production materials when necessary, and urging local authorities to offer temporary subsidies to needy families.In addition, the government will work to ensure market supplies and strengthen market supervision.Local governments also unveiled specific measures intended to help people pressured by the higher cost of living. CHENGDU, Nov. 12 (Xinhua)-- The reconstruction of the Erwang Temple, which was damaged in the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008, is expected to finish on Nov. 18 in southwest China's Sichuan Province, according to local heritage protection authorities on Friday.Sitting in the Yulei Mountains in Dujiangyan City, Erwang Temple was built over 2,000 years ago to commemorate Li Bing and his son, the two engineers who built the Dujiangyan irrigation system, which was listed as a World Heritage site in 2000.The temple will soon be partially open for visitors and the final touches are being added to the water supply, drainage system and lavatories in these areas, said Fan Tuoyu, deputy chief of the Dujiangyan Cultural Relics Administration.The entire temple will be opened after the Chinese Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 3, 2011, said Fan.The reconstruction project kicked off in June, 2008 with an investment of 126 million yuan (19 million U.S. dollars) from the central budget.The temple was seriously damaged in the Wenchuan earthquake with almost all the ancient buildings having collapsed.
