ANAHEIM (CNS) - A man working in a trench at Disneyland in Anaheim suffered fatal injuries Thursday when a steel plate fell on him. Paramedics were called to the park about 3:20 a.m., a Metro Net Fire dispatcher said. Javier Jimenez, a 37-year-old West Covina resident, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, according to Carrie Braun, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Coroner's Office. Jimenez was working for a contractor installing piping for a heating and air conditioning system outside of the theme park on Disneyland property, according to Anaheim police Sgt. Daron Wyatt. Wyatt said a crane carrying a large pipe accidentally struck a cross beam, which knocked over a large metal plate shoring up a wall. He said the metal plate knocked over the worker, who was in an 8- to 10-foot-deep trench. ``We are saddened by this tragic accident involving a contractor and on behalf of Disneyland Resort extend our deepest sympathies to Mr. Jimenez's family, friends and co-workers,'' said Liz Jaeger, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman. 1065

APATUL VALLEY (CNS) - Firefighters battling the Valley Fire in rural eastern San Diego County worked to take advantage of lighter winds and higher humidity this morning in an attempt to increase containment of the blaze.The fire, southeast of Alpine, has burned 17,665 acres, destroyed 30 residences and 31 outbuildings, damaged 11 other structures, injured three firefighters and was 79% contained.At noon Friday, Cal Fire announced that all evacuations and road closures necessitated by the conflagration, dubbed the Valley Fire, had been lifted.However, Cleveland National Forest remained closed to the public until further notice ``to protect natural resources and provide for the safety of the public and firefighters,'' Cal Fire advised.``This closure will stay in place until conditions improve and we are confident that national forest visitors can recreate safely,'' according to the state agency.The blaze erupted for unknown reasons early Sept. 5 off Spirit Trail and Carveacre Road and spread rapidly through tinder-dry vegetation amid sweltering heat and high winds, Cal Fire officials said.Cal Fire cautioned those returning to the fire-ravaged area Friday to ``use extreme caution around trees, power poles and other tall objects or structures that may have been weakened'' by the blaze.The San Diego County Sheriff's Department will increased its patrols in the area to ensure public safety and prevent looting, according to Cal Fire.Officials advised that motorists in the area may face traffic disruptions due to the continued presence of firefighters, law enforcement personnel and utility workers still working there.Non-residents were asked to avoid locales in and around the burn zone if possible.About 140 San Diego Gas & Electric customers in Alpine, Barrett Lake, Dehesa, Lyons Valley and Rancho Palo Verde were without power. Electricity was restore to many customers on Friday and the rest were expected to be back online by Tuesday afternoon, the utility said.Due to smoke drifting over much of the San Diego region, the county Pollution Control District advised that the air quality may be unhealthy in some local communities and advised people to limit outdoor activities until conditions improve.Gov. An employee at an Arizona pizza restaurant may lose his eye after being attacked by a woman with a stiletto. Scottsdale Police report that on Fbe. 19 they were called to Gus' Pizza.Witnesses reportedly told police that 32-year-old Kris May Loring fell out of her chair and onto the floor. She left the restaurant thinking other customers were laughing at her. Police say a few minutes later her boyfriend entered the business, yelled at the customers and allegedly threw pizza at them. While Aaron Walter, a security guard for Gus' Pizza Lounge, attempted to detain the man, police say Loring, "took off her stilettos and charged at the victim." She delivered, "deliberate and violent blows towards the victim's head." “I was kind of holding the back of her boyfriend’s neck, just kind of holding him down while he’s blowing off some steam, and next thing you know, I was hit in the eye,” said Walter. Police say one of the stilettos struck Walter in the eye causing a severe laceration. Walter was hospitalized for several days, and his vision has returned since the attack. “I'm glad it was a stiletto.. I'm glad it wasn’t a knife or a gun,” said Walter. Upon her arrest, Loring allegedly threatened to "bite the nose off the arresting officer." She is facing multiple charges including aggravated assault.Despite what happened, Walter says he holds no ill will towards Loring.“I want her to have a wonderful life, I want her kids to prosper, I want her husband to prosper, and I want everyone to just live."  1579

Army officials at Fort Hood confirmed the identity of a soldier who was a suspect in the disappearance of Pfc. Vanessa Guillen who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Wednesday morning during a confrontation with police.Officials with the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) confirmed the suspect who died Wednesday morning was Aaron Robinson. They also confirmed a second suspect — the estranged wife of a Fort Hood soldier — is also in custody in the Bell County Jail.CID declined to identify the name of the civilian suspect because it was "not in their jurisdiction."CID officials said Robinson and the civilian suspect are currently the only two suspects connected with the case. Officials said social media reports of a third suspect in the case were "irresponsible."The press conference took place a day after Guillen's family claimed that the missing soldier had reported to them before she disappeared that she had been sexually harassed. While CID said Thursday that an investigation into those allegations remains open, they have not yet found credible evidence of harassment.CID also refuted the family's claim that Robinson had harassed Guillen and that Robinson was Guillen's superior officer.Guillen went missing from Fort Hood on April 22. It wasn't until late June that the Army said it suspected foul play in connection with Guillen's death.Army officials reported earlier this week that human remains were found in connection with the search. An American woman and a Japanese man won the elite divisions in the Boston Marathon Monday, the first time runners from each country have taken the top spots in more than 30 years.Desiree (Desi) Linden, a two-time Olympian, battled the rain and wind to win the 122nd running of the storied race. It's also the first marathon win of the 34-year-old's career."I love this city," Linden said. "I love this race, this course. It's storybook, so I'm thrilled to be here and to get it done."And Yuki Kawauchi of Japan came in first place in the men's elite division, overtaking Geoffrey Kirui of Kenya in the final miles.
