The Mid-American Conference announced on Saturday that it would be canceling the fall season for all sports due to COVID-19 concerns. They become the first league competing at college football's Division I level to cancel their fall season over Covid-19 concerns. The Council of Presidents unanimously voted to cancel the fall season, citing the health and safety of the student athletes, coaches and communities as its top priority.With the MAC’s 12 schools facing a significant financial burden by trying to maintain costly coronavirus protocols, the conference’s university presidents made the decision to explore a spring season for football.MAC schools rely heavily on revenue from playing road games against power conference teams. Most of the power conference football games were canceled when other conferences went to exclusively or mostly in-conference games. Without the out-of-conference games, the strain of trying to implement all that it would take to keep players and staff safe during a pandemic became too much.Football isn't the only sport being canceled. All fall sports in the MAC, including men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's soccer, women's soccer and women's volleyball, will not be played this season.Kent State University sent a message to its student's athletes regarding the MAC's decision to cancel fall sports this season, stating that all student athletes who receive a scholarship will get to keep it and that the school is reaching out to the NCAA to request an additional year of eligibility for those who would like it.Nine of 13 conferences at Division I’s second-tier of football, the Championship Subdivision, have already postponed their fall football seasons, with an eye toward making them up in the spring.The MAC has not announced a decision for winter sports at this time.The conference is working to plan for the 2021 spring semester and said it will continue to consult with its Medical Advisory Panel and will monitor COVID-19 developments as it makes its decision. 2038

The number of people still unaccounted for after the devastating Camp Fire in Northern California has dropped to 11, the Butte County Sheriff's Office said.The latest count is down from a one-time high of more than 1,000 people.The death toll dropped from 88 to 85 after DNA testing revealed the remains of three victims were accidentally separated into different bags during the process of recovery, Butte County Sheriff and Coroner Kory Honea said Monday night.The Camp Fire burned through more than 153,000 acres in Butte County after it broke out November 8. It was contained November 25 after becoming the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history.The blaze decimated much of the town of Paradise and destroyed nearly 14,000 homes and more than 4,800 other buildings. 810

The Polk County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office has arrested a substitute teacher at Westwood Middle School after he reportedly grabbed a 12-year-old boy around the neck and pushed him against a wall. Robert Knight, 39, an employee of Kelly Educational Staffing, has been charged with negligent child abuse without bodily harm. The incident occurred on April 12 at Westwood Middle School in Winter Haven. Deputies responded to a call in reference to a child abuse investigation. A student told deputies he was choked by the P.E. coach, Robert Knight, on Wednesday, April 11. The student told deputies that he and Knight were "smack talking" when Knight took his shirt off and challenged the student to a fight, according to the arrest affidavit. The student said he didn't want to fight a "thirty year old man." Knight then wrapped his hand around the student's neck and pushed him against the wall while other students grabbed Knight's arm and attempted to separate him from the student, according to the affidavit. While he was being interviewed, Knight told deputies "I guess I finally let it get to me," referencing the smack talking with the student. He told deputies he "lost his cool" and doesn't know if he blacked out during the incident but that all he remembers were the kids pulling him off of the student. Knight is not employed by the Polk County School Board, but is employed by Kelly Educational Staffing as a substitute teacher. He was filling in for the male P.E. coach on Wednesday, April 11. Knight was taken into custody and transported to the Polk County Jail without incident."We expect much better conduct from a substitute school teacher. We compliment the school district staff who worked hand-in-hand with us to hold Mr. Knight accountable for his conduct" said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. 1855

The number of unauthorized immigrants in the US continued to decrease in 2016, a trend that started in 2007, according to a new report from Pew Research Center. Eleven years ago, there were around 12.2 million undocumented immigrants in the US (up from 3.5 million in 1990) while Pew's most recent report estimates there were around 10.7 million living here in 2016, the lowest estimate in a decade.Among the countries with the most immigrants in the US, the biggest decrease in undocumented immigrants was from Mexico. In 2007, around 6,950,000 unauthorized Mexican immigrants were living in the US. That figure was down to 5,450,000 in 2016. In 2012, specialists from Pew wrote in an opinion piece for CNN that Mexican immigration had decreased in the US due to a number of reasons including the weak US economy, heightened law enforcement on the border, Mexico's recession from 2008 to 2009, and a decline in Mexican birth rates.Jeffrey S. Passel and D'Vera Cohn of Pew wrote back then, "What caused the big immigration wave to stop? We think that many factors were at work, on both sides of the border.
