A new study takes a closer look at the impact the amount of time children spend on cell phones, computers and TV is having on their brains.“What they're finding, or what they're reporting, is that more screen time--in fact a lot of screen time, around 7 hours a day--is associated with changes in the brain and changes in cognition,” says Rachel Barr, a developmental psychologist.Dr. Barr studies the impact TVs, computers and cell phones can have on young children.Kids between the ages of 8 and 12 spend generally six hours a day, while teens are spending nearly nine hours.While Dr. Barr agrees too much time can have negative impacts, she points out what children watch on their devices matter.“Exposure to education programing in younger children is associated with better outcomes and especially for children who are growing up in low resourced communities,” Dr. Barr explains.As for what parents can do: set time limits and ground rules, like keeping screens out of the bedroom, which can make it easier for children to fall and stay asleep.“Setting up this family media plan, being mindful of your own media use and your child's media use, even though you're being bombarded by all of these changes in media yourself,” suggests Dr. Barr. 1254

A teacher in Kansas who just wanted to keep track of schools closing this fall because of COVID-19 cases, has created a nationwide database to help parents and educators.Alisha Morris teaches in Kansas’ Olathe School District and as she prepared for this fall, began looking into how other districts and schools were handling the first few weeks of class.“I was seeing a lot of articles about schools that were opening up and issues already happening on Day 1,” Morris, 29, said. “I thought, 'Wow!' Maybe these are a lot of repeat articles, and I’m just seeing the same thing over and over. Surely, there can’t be that many already,’” Morris told MyCentralJersey.com.She started keeping track of articles and COVID-19 cases and closures at schools in a Google spreadsheet. She shared it with colleagues and friends, then with her school district’s board of education.“The response I received was astronomical,” Morris said.As word spread about the database, more submissions came in. There are more than 700 entries for more than 40 states. Morris has set up a way for people to submit cases and school closures through her spreadsheet.Morris hopes to transition to a new system soon, with help from volunteers.“When I first created this spreadsheet, I had no idea that it was going to become such a big thing. A suspect who had barricaded himself on Tuesday in his Panama City, Florida, home after an earlier shooting was later found dead in the residence, authorities said.The Bay County Sheriff's Office identified the dead suspect as 49-year-old Kevin Robert Holroyd.One person had a minor injury and was transported to a hospital, city spokeswoman Caitlin Lawrence said earlier Tuesday.The hunt for Holroyd, who was wanted in connection with a homicide in Santa Rosa Beach in Walton County, ended with his death about 57 miles southeast in Bay County, after he opened fire on police, the Bay County Sheriff's Office said.Authorities did not say how Holroyd died.The Bay County Sheriff's Office and Panama City police began searching for Holroyd in case he returned to Bay County. Investigators started watching Holroyd's townhome apartment after his vehicle was seen there. During that time, a complex resident called the fire department to report a gas smell, the sheriff's office said.The investigators got out of their cars to find out why firefighters had arrived in the complex parking lot, authorities said.From an upstairs window of the apartment, Holroyd opened fire on the firefighters and investigators, and other responding officers, including Panama City police, the sheriff's office said.About 100 rounds were fired during the gunbattle, the sheriff's office said.At one point, two Panama City officers and a sheriff's deputy were pinned down behind their vehicles by the gunfire, the sheriff's office said.Photos from Eryn Dion of the Panama City News Herald showed a heavy police presence in the area during the standoff.Stacie Houchins said she did not see the incident start, but she decided to go to the scene to see what was going on.
