ATLANTA, Ga. -- From the motivational speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to the spiritual guidance of Mahatma Gandhi, Morehouse College in Atlanta is literally covered with inspirational messages.One phrase, however, has become the mantra for what it takes to become a Morehouse man:“Iron sharpens iron,” said Morehouse College president Dr. David Thomas.Thomas says students and staff at this historically black men’s college have turned struggles into strengths for more than a century.“What we do here is something that doesn’t happen anywhere else on the planet,” he said.The Morehouse campus is quiet this summer with all classes now being taught online. A decision Thomas says may spill over into the fall semester.“I’ve got to do the best job I can for this college,”said Thomas. With staff and salary cuts already happening, the impacts of COVID-19 could last much longer.“When you talk to our students about their experience being here, they will often talk about the power of being in a place where black male excellence is an expectation,” Thomas said. “And that’s hard to communicate in a virtual experience."Morehouse’s 2020 valedictorian, however, was able to express the difficultly of this new reality in simple terms“I think my experience when COVID hit was, I describe it as a little disappointing,” said new graduate Golden Daka.Though Daka is disappointed, he says his class has turned this pandemic into a learning experience.“It let us know that life isn’t not guaranteed and the most precious moments that you cherish could easily be taken away from you,” he said. “So, a lot of people are approaching this as a form of adversity to get stronger an to get better in areas of weakness.”In addition to closing campus, Morehouse College has also canceled all fall sports, which they say is the first Division II HBCU in the country to make that decision.“It’s heartbreaking for me,” Thomas said.Despite the disappointment, Thomas says Morehouse is more focused on academics than athletics, adding that the key to reopening campus is finding a vaccine.“We’re going to have to do that before I think we can declare victory against the virus,” he said.Morehouse now has the chance to play a role in that victory. At first glance, you may not notice what's different about this box of cereal. Maybe it's just one of those special editions that's in stores for a short time. But if you take a closer look you might ask, what's up with that?When Naomi Frierson walked into her local Walmart and down the aisle, her focus was getting her mom a box of her favorite cereal."I just picked it up and I kind of looked at it," Frierson said. "And I figured it was one of those special edition type of boxes. ... I didn't think much of it."But when she got home, her husband noticed."We proceed to look at it further and realize that not only are there mugshots but they're serial killers," Frierson said. "Not the C-E-R-E-A-L kind unfortunately."The box of "Life" cereal is covered with people synonymous with death. Larry, the Quaker Oats mascot is Jeffrey Dahmer. And instead of being made with 20 whole grains, it's made with 20 whole brains."And then on the nutrition panel you've got stuff like instead of cholesterol it says chloroform," Frierson said. "Down here it says cyanide."Frierson said she was creeped out, but her husband loved it."He immediately recognized all of the different players in the game," Frierson said. "And he thought it was just the coolest thing ever and assured me that it must be art."He was right. The box was a class project made by Lauren Miller, a senior art student at the University of South Florida."I kind of just wanted it to blend in with everything else," Miller said. "I took a bunch of pictures that I found online of serial killers and I used Photoshop to add them to the Life cereal box. I just thought it would be interesting to use Life cereals since these people did take away lives."Miller has a large version of the box in her studio but wanted to see how people reacted to this smaller version in the community.Frierson said, "I had people on my personal Facebook when I posted that thing like, 'Oh my gosh I need to have that. How can I get one? Are there more?'"Frierson said she's keeping this box, and Miller is exploring creating more to sell.Miller said she left a note on the box saying it was art and had already been paid for. But for Frierson, the initial jitters and overall experience was well worth the price."I think (it was) three dollars well spent for an interesting piece of art," Frierson said.A creepy class project, taking on a life of its own."I would say a solid 'A' so if you didn't get an 'A' I'll call your professor," Frierson said. 2539

As the pandemic has left millions unemployed or with reduced incomes, the demand at food pantries has soared in 2020.While there is relief coming for millions of Americans, Feeding America, a consortium of 200 food banks and 60,000 pantries nationwide, say that the stimulus signed by President Donald Trump last night was merely a “down payment.”Pantries across the US saw a 60% rise in demand in 2020, according to Feeding America.“As our country continues to weather a once-in-a-generation public health and economic emergency, the bipartisan agreement is an important down payment to help provide the food assistance our neighbors need, but further action will also be necessary in the coming months,” said Kate Leone, chief government relations officer for Feeding America.The legislation includes 0 million for the Emergency Food Assistance Program, but Leone cautions that more could be needed in the future.“The bipartisan legislation will provide much-needed short-term relief,” Leone said. “As 2020 ends, we know the need for food assistance will continue. Astronaut Nick Hague was ready for a mission that would send him and cosmonaut Aleksey Ovchinin to the International Space Station to join a crew of three that was already on board the station. But just minutes into last week's flight on board the Soyuz MS-10 craft, the crew needed to abort the mission due to a booster failure. The incident marked the first aborted flight of a Soyuz craft in more than four decades. On Wednesday, Hague described the harrowing moments that followed after the booster's failure. “We were tossed back and forth inside the capsule a little bit and thrusted away from the rocket as soon as the launch abort system had recognized there was a problem with the booster," Hague said. That is when Hague's training and past as a US Air Force pilot kicked in. “My career in the Air Force has done a lot to help me prepare for stressful situations like this, whether it’s through deployments or my time in flight test where we have had to deal with failures in aircraft that you’re in and having to get down on the ground immediately,” he said. “We train endlessly to address those types of situations."After surviving an incident at 30 miles above the ground, Hague plans on making another attempt to visit the International Space Station in 2019.   1338

At least 18 people have been killed and 178 others injured after a train derailed in Yilan County in northeastern Taiwan, according to an update from the island's transport ministry.Initially, the ministry said 22 people died, but it later revised the number.The train was traveling between the cities of Shulin and Taitung when it derailed Sunday on a coastal line reportedly popular with tourists.The train was carrying 366 passengers when the accident occurred just before 5 pm local time, the transport ministry said. 529
