Notre Dame became the second college this week to cancel in-person classes and move online because of a spike in coronavirus cases on campus.During an address to students Tuesday, Notre Dame President Rev. John Jenkins said the spike was likely from off-campus gatherings in the last week, according to the school’s contact tracing efforts.Every student at Notre Dame, roughly 12,000, was tested before they returned to campus to start class on August 10, and there were just 33 students who tested positive according to the school.Just a week later, on Monday, of 927 students who were tested, 147 were positive for the coronavirus.“For at least the next two weeks we will move undergraduate classes to remote instruction, close public spaces on campus, and restrict resident halls to residents only,” Rev. Jenkins told students.Students living off-campus are urged to remain there and only allow roommates into their dwelling.Rev. Jenkins also said student gatherings will be limited to only ten people. The previous limit when school started last week was 20 people.“If these steps are not successful, we will have to send students home,” Rev. Jenkins said.The University of North Carolina also announced this week they would be transitioning to remote learning following a spike in positive coronavirus tests on campus.The university reported 129 confirmed COVID-19 cases last week, and a jump in its positivity rate from 2.8% to 13.6%. The university said it has tested 954 students with 177 in isolation and 349 in quarantine. The university said that most of the infected students have mild symptoms.Also on Tuesday, Michigan State University pushed back their start date and announced they will be doing remote learning as well. In a statement posted by MSU's president, the school did not cite a specific spike in their area, but rather what they are seeing at other institutions as they return to campus. "It has become evident to me that, despite our best efforts and strong planning, it is unlikely we can prevent widespread transmission of COVID-19 between students if our undergraduates return to campus," the statement from President Samuel Stanley Jr., M.D., reads. Officers in New Jersey broke up a large house party in New Jersey with hundreds of people in attendance, authorities said.Police responded to a residence along Mill Pond Road in Jackson following a report of a suspicious incident around 8:30 p.m., according to Jackson Police Department.Officers arrived and spoke with several neighbors who said a house on the street was rented out to a group that was having a large party, causing a disturbance.Police contacted the homeowner, who said he had rented out the residence on Airbnb.The party expanded to about 700 people in attendance, with over 100 vehicles parked in the area, according to police.Officers began clearing the crowd from the residence and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office was contacted and authorized charges against the homeowner and party organizer for violating the state’s executive order in reference to the number of attendees allowed at a gathering.Officers from the Freehold Police Department, Howell Police Department, Lakewood Police Department, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Ocean County Sheriff’s Department, and New Jersey State Police also responded to assist and clear the large crowd from the residence and direct traffic as people left the area, according to authorities.During that time, police also received a call from a resident nearby reporting people who attended the party had broken into their residence and were damaging property.An investigation determined a family member of the caller was at the original party and had invited a large group back to their residence. The group was then dispersed, police said.It took until 1 a.m. for the officers to clear the residences of partygoers and all the vehicles from the neighborhood.The homeowner, later identified as 40-year-old Yaakov Weiss and the party organizers, 23-year-old Patience Guanue and 22-year-old Alicia Hinneh, were issued summonses.Gov. Phil Murphy referenced the party during his daily coronavirus briefing Monday while discussing flare-ups, particularly among young adults who attended recent house parties."You're looking for trouble, you're absolutely looking for trouble, no matter how old you are," he said of people who don't comply with social distancing orders.State Police Superintendent Pat Callahan attributed the large parties to the lack of bars and restaurants open due to the pandemic.“I do think the fact that bars and restaurants are close then create this underground situation, which is certainly not what we want," he said.In a statement, an Airbnb spokesperson said the company is in full contact with the company and is offering their support."We strongly condemn the reported behavior, which represents both a clear violation of Airbnb’s community policies and a particularly serious abuse during this public health crisis," Airbnb said.The listing has since been deactivated and the party organizers have also been removed from the platform, the company said.WPIX's Kristine Garcia first reported this story. 3005

ORLANDO, Fla. — A Georgia woman who ran in the 10th Anniversary Disney Princess Half Marathon over the weekend says she lost a cross pendant necklace filled with her daughter's ashes on Sunday.Chasity Foster, a teacher from Augusta, Georgia, lost her 17-year-old daughter, Shaylin, in a car crash on her way to school last month. Shaylin was a high school senior who had been accepted into college to become a biomechanical engineer with the dream of creating prosthetics for children. Before the tragic accident, Foster said the two used to run several marathons together; including the Disney marathon."She was a very fast runner. She was involved in soccer, cross country and track," Foster told Digital Producer Veronica Beltran over the phone. Foster said this year they had signed up for the Disney Fairy Tale Challenge, previously known as the Glass Slipper challenge, — which involves a 19.3 mile magical adventure in two days including the Disney Princess Enchanted 10K and the 10th Anniversary Disney Princess Half Marathon.She said after last month's accident she was unsure about participating in the race. After Wesley Baker, Shaylin's best friend, asked his mom, "what if Shaylin would have wanted us to?" she knew they would in fact be heading to Florida for the race to run in her honor.Foster said her husband, Chris, ran in Shaylin's place and even wore her Princess Anna costume. During Sunday's marathon, Foster says she was hesitant to wear the cross pendant necklace with Shaylin's ashes because it means so much to her but she wanted her daughter to be there with her as she ran even if she wasn't there physically."I had my husband double check to make sure the necklace was on properly because I didn't want it to fall off," Foster said. "During mile three, I realized the necklace was missing. It's devastating to lose any child and then to lose the necklace I started freaking out."She said she was still wearing the necklace when they were in front of the Magic Kingdom parking lot entrance. A short distance later, near the princesses, is when she realized it was gone.She went to look for it with her family and friends, but wasn't able to find it before heading back to Georgia."To lose this necklace is just devastating and priceless. No amount of money in the world could replace this necklace," she said.Foster said the necklace matches her daughter's promise ring — which her father gave her at her 16th birthday — and has her name engraved in the back."If anyone finds the necklace they can contact me in any way possible that they can," Foster said. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - The Rugby team at MiraCosta College has qualified for the National Championships in Pittsburgh.The Spartans Rugby program is in its first full competitive season, and due to the lack of Junior College teams in Southern California, they play a schedule that consists of NCAA 4-year schools.The MiraCosta Rugby team is made up of around 40 players, many of whom have backgrounds in football and wrestling.The team doesn't lack for experience, as a few players have been playing for over 10 years, like Ian Crilly, who says he's pleased with the team's progression."I've been playing for about 12 years now, so it was a little rough with these first year players. Trying to get them up to speed but we got there," said Crilly.The Spartans begin play in the National Championships on April 21, and win or lose, they feel all there success this season has put the school on the map for athletics. They hope their success will get more kids, both men and women, to come out for the sport.  1028
