TIANJIN, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- The capacity of China's plantation industry might decline as a result of global warming, according to a report released during a new round of UN climate talks being held in north China's Tianjin Municipality from Oct. 4 to 9.If no proper measures were taken, the capacity of China's plantation industry might decline by 5 to 10 percent by 2030, characterized by a reduction in the output of wheat, rice and corn, said the report, released by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and several other organizations during the conference."The situation may get worse after 2050," the report warned.It said the soaring content of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would have a "significant" impact on the output of wheat, rice and corn.Also, higher temperatures might put more farmland in China at risk from of insect damage and forest fires, the report explained.Further, some farmland might be inundated if the sea level rises as a result of global warming, it said.China has only about 7 percent of the world's arable land, while feeding more than 1.3 billion people which accounts for about 20 percent of the world' s population.
Beijing, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Officials from 28 countries across Asia and the Pacific gathered Thursday in Beijing for a high-level meeting on cooperation on children's rights in the Asia-Pacific region.Anthony Lake, executive director of the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), called for collaboration among Asia Pacific countries in protecting children's rights in a speech delivered at the meeting.Lake said,"We are already seeing the benefits of cooperation in areas that cut across borders, from preventing the spread of disease, to addressing the effects of climate change, to increasing child protection, to improving education."During the three-day meeting, more than 180 representatives from 28 countries in the Asia-Pacific region are expected to discuss issues on children's welfare and protection and the realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), these being eight global anti-poverty objectives due to be accomplished by 2015.The meeting, scheduled from November 4 to 6, is hosted by the All-China Women's Federation, the National Working Committee for Children and Women under the State Council, China's Ministry of Commerce, and with support from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
HANOI, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- The cooperation among China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK) is an important part of East Asian cooperation, and the correct direction of the tripartite cooperation should be firmly kept from a strategic perspective, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Friday at a meeting of leaders of the three countries.The cooperation among China, Japan and the ROK, an important part of East Asian cooperation, has been developing soundly with the efforts of the three countries, Wen said when meeting with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan.The three countries should attach strategic importance to the cooperation among them and steer it in the right direction. SHANGHAI, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin on Friday called for broader and deeper exchanges between the mainland and Taiwan, and stressed the role of cultural exchanges.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks in Shanghai at a forum of social groups of Taiwan compatriots.Historic changes have been achieved in cross-Strait relations in recent years along with a series of positive results, and a favorable situation of peaceful development has emerged, Jia said.He said the fields of exchanges should be expanded to promote cross-Strait exchanges.He welcomed more Taiwan compatriots to visit the Chinese mainland in the future to enhance their understanding of the mainland's social and economic development, and encouraged more mainlanders to travel to Taiwan, especially to the central and southern parts of the island.He also hoped that compatriots home and abroad would participate and promote cross-Strait exchanges and benefit from them.The top political advisor also said cultural exchanges must be enhanced.Both sides across the Strait should work together to promote the Chinese culture and increase its influence.Lien Chan, honorary chairman of the Kuomintang Party (KMT), said at the forum that it was not easy to achieve the current peaceful, stable and rapidly developing state of cross-Strait relations.He urged both sides to cherish such a historic opportunity and lay the groundwork for peace, prosperity and sustainable development across the Strait.
